Busy Busy The school continues to be a busy place at this time of year. Teachers are busy completing reports on top of day to day operations and ongoing teaching and learning cycles. Students in Year 3 and 5 are completing NAPLAN online and sporting teams are playing in a variety of gala or state knockout competitions. Good luck to boys’ and girls’ soccer for next Monday, girls netball for next Tuesday, boys AFL next Tuesday and the softball team this Friday. There are some works being conducted in B and C block with painting of all classrooms, as well as replacement of the cabinetry in two of the rooms. Please be advised that there will be no school banking next week. Thanks for your understanding of this. Athletics carnival is next Thursday, May 30. These days are always a great day out and terrific community events. If you have a sausage sizzle order, please get that back to school as soon as possible and by Monday May 27. I would also like to inform Year 5 and 6 students’ parents that we will be holding a cyber safety session with all of Stage 3. Mrs Kerie Wells, Youth Liaison Officer from the police, will conduct this on Friday May 31. These sessions are very informative and give students some really valid and current information about the use of social media and online activity. Helping your Child We often get asked how you as parents can help your child at home. I thought I would share some Department of Education (DoE) resources on this. I also note that in some school evaluation feedback sought in the past two years, parents had requested more information on this to be communicated. We are always looking at ways we can enhance communication. Look out on Facebook from time to time for some additional communications that will provide updates on school. We have one planned shortly about our lunch and recess options to share with families. I thought I would share a few tips in the next few newsletters, starting with learning to read. Reading is the foundation for learning across the curriculum and will help your child learn in all areas at school. One of the best things parents can do for their child’s literacy development is read to them often and from an early age. When your child sees you value reading, it will model to them that reading and writing is important and that they are useful skills. There is a lot of evidence that reading and literacy skills in general are more important than ever, especially in a world that is ever changing. There are changes in employment and the jobs our students may have in the future, currently do not exist. Here are some tips that you can use in helping your child read at home:

Be confident that your child will learn to read. Give positive messages and involve them in everyday conversations and opportunities to read.

Read aloud to your child. It helps them to learn about the language of books and will encourage them to enjoy books and reading.

Make reading enjoyable and talk about books, magazines and computer stories that you have read together.

Try not to let television intrude on reading time. Make a special time for reading with your child, away from interruptions.

Listen to your child read as often as you can, every day if possible, even if only for a short time. Give books in print or electronic form as treats and presents.

The DoE has reference material that you can access, such as an A-Z of terms that your child will learn over the course of their education journey. See the link below: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/practical-help-for-parents-and-carers/learning-resources/english/english-a-to-z Experiences of Parenting survey We have been asked by The Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland to support some research being conducted about parenting. This is being sought from all public schools and others schools nationally. The research asks ‘Are You A Parent of a Child Aged 2 to 12?’ The Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland is conducting research into parents’ opinions about parenting and parenting

programs. If you have a child between 2 and 12 years, we would love to hear your views on parenting and the services that are available to you as a parent. You will need to complete a short survey. To find out more or to participate please visit https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/parenting Walk Safely to School Day Walk safely to school day was well received last Friday. It was great to meet many students and families at our two locations and join together to ‘walk safely to school’. Of course students and families are encouraged to do so on any day to support healthy lifestyle choices. Thanks I want to acknowledge the hard work of the P&C who have organised a variety of fundraising events already this year. Members have been here almost daily, working on things and getting arrangements in place so that events run smoothly. A special thank you to Deb S and Vanessa D for this over the whole of 2019. I would like to also thank Michael O for a second generous donation for the Election Day BBQ. He has donated the sausages at both our Bunnings BBQ and the Election Day BBQ. It is greatly appreciated. Finally, thanks to the community for supporting our school by offering to help on the day and bringing in goodies for our cake stall. We are all lucky to be part of a cohesive school community at Chittaway Bay. Have a wonderful week of learning Chittaway. Nish Green Principal
