• Outstanding performance in ECAs

• We have more Nets than most schools (8)

• High teacher-to-student ratio

• Good language environment • The swimming pool complex is nearly finished

• Increasing number of applicants

• Renovating work in progress (New classrooms, and function room) • High reputation in Tuen Mun District • School fee is affordable

• There are 2 social workers

• Many native Chinese teachers

2.2. Our Weaknesses

• Limited space

• An old and small building, old facilities

• Advanced technology has not been fully utilized

• No through-train secondary school • Students are comparatively weak in Chinese and Maths

• Chinese learning environment could be further enhanced

• More professional development needed

• Teachers spend too much time in fee collection work

• The benefits of co-teaching could be maximized

• Delays in construction of swimming complex, noise and pollution from construction site in the campus

• Not enough janitors and supporting staff • For some students, family support is not enough and leads to poor academic results

• Location of school is too remote that enrollment of students are limited to New Territories West • Fewer IT lessons is weakening students’ typing skills

• Programs to cater for learning differences among NCS students shall be considered

• Hygiene condition needs to be improved (especially the toilets) • E-learning is not in every subjects

• Too many students in a class

• Too many sister schools, can’t focus, kids don’t get much benefit

Our Opportunities • The only EMI primary school in Tuen Mun

• There is possibility of having more income from renting out the swimming pool

Page 5: SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2016/2017 - yyps.edu.hk · 80% teachers find it useful for using i-pad in teaching 80% of Chinese and English teachers find the assessment platform useful and

• NCS funding, strong subsidies from the Government • Secondary schools accept our P.5 students to their F.1 class

• Use of technology on teaching / Ipad / IT skills

• Young and enthusiastic teachers

• Organized competitions for kindergarten help to promote reputation

• More high housing have been built, the socio-economic background of residents has raised

• Birth rate is increasing

• Use of co-teaching

• Changes in social attitudes towards the TSA

• Teachers from different cultures enhance discussions

2.3. Our Threats

• Too many through-train schools

• Many competitors (more EMI school in New Territories) • Some government or local schools have cut down the amount of homework given to their students

• Some students leave when they are in P.5 due to have a secondary school placement • Birth rate has decreased, fewer students (Government restriction for mainland mothers) • Parents are expecting better results in Chinese

• High maintenance cost for the swimming pool complex

• No through-train school • There will be one more international school at the Gold Coast in the next school year • We tend to choose talkative kids during P.1 admission, so we can’t spot the quiet but bright kids

• Increasing numbers of SEN students

• Family issues, pressure on teachers

3. Major Concerns for 2016/2017 3.1. Build a welcoming campus (a loving and caring school environment) 3.2. Cater for learners with special needs 3.3. Enhance Co-teaching practice

B. To enhance teachers’ professional development

in Math*

Whole Year

Every Math teacher should i) attend at least one Math professional program, ii) finish at least one peer lesson observation throughout the whole year. Two teachers hold a sharing session to reflect what they have learnt from courses or seminars.

Participation of all subject teachers

Collection of teachers’ self-learning record sheets

Peer lesson observation form

11 teachers attended Mathematics related seminars. 6 teachers completed peer lesson observation. Bianca and Bill held a sharing session about the use of Nearpod, Kahoot and Geogebra on 27 June 2017.

The Math panel will invite more teachers to go to seminar next year. We could hold the third sharing session in one school term. One lesson observation will be done in the second term.

C. To arouse students’ interest in learning Math and gain more self-confidence. To provide students with a chance of handling more challenging tasks

Whole year

Students will take part in at least 6 competitions in the school year.

Participation of teachers and students

Students have joined 8 Math competitions, 6 led by teachers. They received 7 gold awards, 22 silver awards, 8 bronze awards, 1 1st prize, 2 2nd prized and 4 3rd prize awards and 6 merits.

The Math department plans to join more Olympiad Mathematics competitions.

D. To promote a student-centred learning environment (E.g. discovery, self-directed learning)

First term

Every teacher has designed their lessons with guided questions and put all the guiding questions (with different levels of thinking) in the scheme of work for at least one unit. Also the principal, vice principals and panel heads agree that most teachers can implement the pedagogy during the lesson observation periods.

Lesson observation by panel heads, ST and Mr Cheung

Bianca, Sai Wah and Jaskie agreed that teachers used more guiding questions to elicit students contribution in lessons. Kat did not observe Math lessons. Daniel believed that the performance of Math teachers is average. Mr Cheung agreed that Math teachers used more questions in lessons to guide students thinking instead of just talking.

In the coming year, a new lesson observation form will be designed for special objectives such as the use of e-learning apps/ programs for teaching and learning as well as for informal assessment.

Teachers’ observations and feedback and students’ results

P3 students were asked the dimension of the A4 paper (2%) once in the quiz.

In the next school year, P4 and P6 could do this kind of quiz too on the topic of area and circumference.

F. To keep students’ interest in learning Math.

2nd term or 3rd term

Math month will be held and at least 90 % of students enjoy the activity

Teachers’ observation

Math Month was held in January. There was a higher participation than last year in Math week.

Next year, we will have more teachers involved and since students were so excited about the lucky draw, we could draw more winners in each grade to encourage them. Also, we would like to encourage more students to participate in the activity and have an award for the class in each grade with highest participation.

K Variety Show (Musical) April / May, 2017

Students participate in the activity enthusiastically.

Teacher, Parent & Student participation feedback

Most teachers, parents and students enjoyed the show. As the venue was not big enough, we didn’t invite alumni this year. We booked one more day to do rehearsals to let the show run smoothly. However, since we added musical as a part of the variety show, the show was a bit too long. An accident happened during rehearsal.

Teachers suggested that Variety Show and Musical should be separated. We will have musical in March and variety show in April or May next year. To avoid any accident happen, students can only join not more than 3 performances. Students of gymnastics performance required 80% of attendance of lessons.
