Using Unmanned Aerial Systems to Assess and Quantify Flooding Impacts at Michigan State University

In late February of this year, Michigan State University campus and the surrounding area experienced one of its worst flood events since 1975. Large portions of campus adjacent to the Red Cedar River were inundated. As the primary UAS group at MSU, RS&GIS was asked by the MSU Police Department and the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Utilities (IPF) to collect imagery over the floodplain to assist with future planning and engineering efforts. RS&GIS will discuss the unique challenges associated with this effort, as well as data products that resulted from the mapping effort.

Water Asset Management in Clinton Township

Clinton Township is responsible for maintaining about 350 miles of water mains, 5,000 hydrants and 4,300 valves. As part of the MDEQ directive, the township embarked on the process of creating a Water Asset Management (WAM) plan. One of the end results is a scoring matrix that takes into account probability (POF) and consequence of failure (COF) of each water main segment. The WAM will serve as a guidance tool for future capital improvement projects.

Disseminating/Engaging your Data with the Public: Geoforms, Web Apps, & Story Maps

You’ve built an amazing GIS dataset for the public, now it’s time to send it out into the world! But how? Paper maps are wonderful, but where’s the interaction? Have you considered powerful tools such as GeoForms, Web Applications, or Story Maps as a medium to disseminate and engage your audience? In this session, we will go over applications for these mediums, and how to make these tools get the most out of your Audience.

Using FME to Integrate Local Government Information

FME is an industry-leading Spatial ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) Tool used by an increasing number of organizations to automate routine data movement tasks. It’s powerful, performant, easy-to-use, and supports hundreds of data structures. Here in Michigan, FME is used for BS&A/GIS data integration, interfaces between various systems, and automated data publication. This presentation will describe and demonstrate these within the larger context of common Michigan county/local government responsibilities.

Battle Royale: Pix4D vs Drone2Map (A Comparison of Drone Processing Softwares as applied to GIS and a “Fly-Through” of UAV/GIS workflows)

With the rise of the “Drone Invasion” many companies are jumping on the band wagon and looking at purchasing a drone, and by extension processing software. From a GIS Perspective, which one will get me what I need for X project? In this session, we will compare the popular Pix4D image processing suite with ESRI’s version: Drone2Map. We’ll also discuss the basic workflow from the UAV hitting the ground (softly and purposefully), to product creation.

The Comedy of Crystal Lake: Re-creation of a Historic Canal that Became a Beach

Crystal Lake, the 9th largest inland lake in MI, was lowered in 1873 in a failed attempt to build a canal to nearby Lake Michigan. GIS analysis of a QL2 LiDAR dataset (MiSAIL) allowed reconstruction of elevation drop (17 ft); water surface lost = beach gained (2,000 A, 21 mi); water volume discharged (56,000,000,000 Bgal); and dredged volume (105,000 cu yds) from cross-sections of three canals. All features are portrayed in a dramatic topographical map.

Soil Survey Rectification

During the SSURGO initiative, the atlas sheets from the published soil survey were used for manual recompilation. Many of the soil surveys in Michigan were manually recompiled to the USGS topographic base maps due to lack of available digital orthophotography. Because of this, most of these surveys have areas of poorly recompiled soil lines. To improve the line placement for these poorly recompiled surveys, we rectify the scans of the atlas sheets and then extract the soil lines from the rectified image of the atlas sheet.
