SCA GROUP NEWSLETTER | Issue 1 4

SCA Group’s Rope Access technicians have been called upon to assist in the efforts to re-open the section of Teignmouth to Dawlish railway line that was severely damaged in the February storms. The railway line connects the South West to the rest of the UK and is an essential part of the infrastructure for this part of the country.

In early February, after a prolonged period of torrential rain and high winds, huge waves left the railway tracks suspended in mid-air. A week later, further damage was sustained in more storms, and Network Rail claimed that this important stretch of railway would remain closed until mid-April.

Now, specialist fire crews are helping to instigate a controlled landslide in the area above the rail track where workers are fighting around the clock

to get the line re-opened. High pressure water will be pumped up the cliff face from the sea to saturate some 350,000 tonnes of soil and rock and create a manmade landslip dislodging the precariously placed landmass, and ensuring that the line can become functional again as soon as possible.

SCA’s Rope Access team have been employed to work alongside geo-technical engineers, monitoring the progress of the enforced movement of land.

The safe access systems to allow the observation have all been provided by our experienced team, and all the necessary supervision is in place to abide by the IRATA legislation, and to ensure the safety of all workers on the site.

The SCA Group’s Rope Access team are currently employed undertaking maintenance of the Transporter Bridge located over the River Tees, Middlesbrough. The structure was built in 1911 to replace an earlier steam ferry, and connects Middlesbrough on the south bank to Port Clarence on the north bank.

SCA were recruited by TI Coatings, who were in turn appointed by Balfour Beatty, to apply a new paint covering to the structure. A total of 10,000m2 is required for repair and re-coating, all of which is to be achieved via Rope Access.

To complete the contract by April / May 2014, SCA are required to carry out patch repair to approximately 25% of the Transporter Bridge’s surface, and then apply the new coating to finalise the refurbishment of the structure. SCA have a team of up to 18 Rope Access technicians on site to make this happen.

All of SCA’s operatives are trained to carry out the painting activities to ICATS standards as expected by the main contractor, and possess the relevant IRATA accreditation to perform the task via Rope Access.

All work is carried out under Level 3 Supervision, as stipulated under IRATA regulations.

SCA Group’s multiple divisions have been extremely busy of late undertaking many projects that have utilised our professional approach in a number of trades.

In all aspects of our business, we take great pride in the quality of our workmanship, and our attitude to health and safety.

The summary below is a small snippet of the types of contracts that we have been involved in of late, which hopefully will give you an insight in to our business, how we operate, and what we are capable of.

Offshore Maintenance

SCA’s Rope Access division has recently completed a three month contract restoring and maintaining electrical sub-stations at the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm just off of the Kent Coastline.

The sub-stations had a number of coating defects and damages that required careful attention to restore the surfaces to a satisfactory quality.

SCA’s highly skilled team carried out all the repairs necessary, as well as providing accommodation subsistence, storage facilities, materials, tools and expendables, and everything else required to reach a successful conclusion for the project.

Shipyards

In all of SCA’s shipyard locations from Falmouth up to Hebburn & Tees, a number of repair and maintenance projects have been completed in tandem with our partnered clients. We have worked on a vast selection of war ships, private yachts, cargo vessels, cruise liners and tugs, and assisted in quick turnarounds and specialised access solutions.

In the Falmouth dockyard, SCA’s team have been working hard to make sure that the vessel European Endeavour underwent its maintenance package and returned to the water on time.

A large pre-fabricated scaffold had to be constructed on the quayside and was craned in to place so that essential hull repairs could be carried out.

Industrial Coatings

SCA’s Multi-Discipline division has recently been involved in the refurbishment of

Brockenhurst Bridge in the heart of the New Forest.

The project involved erecting the appropriate access scaffold and temporary containment to provide the necessary conditions that allowed the new coating to be applied to the refurbished steelwork.

Contract Scaffolding

Our specialist contract scaffolding division have been working across the region on a number of projects in recent months.

One such contract is the Nuclear Decommissioning phase at Harwell in Oxfordshire. The plant was built in 1946 and is undergoing a massive demolition project not expected to be complete until 2064!

SCA’s team was called in to construct a bespoke design multi levelled access scaffold, complete with superior heat shrink sheeting, to allow the removal of the Gunite protective wall that enclosed the nuclear reactor.

Rope Access Rail Maintenance

SCA Group’s rapid response capabilities of our highly trained Rope Access operatives, are being utilised on the Wrotham Railway to carry out emergency repairs and maintenance to rock face protection netting on the Wrotham Railway line in Kent.

The existing steel rock netting required repairs along a section of the railway line to allow the track to be fully re-opened as soon as possible, and SCA’s Rope Access technicians have performed the geo-technical drilling services to anchor the netting back in to place. The steel netting is a vital component of the railway line protecting the track from falling rock and debris, and allowing services to operate unhindered.

SCA look forward to busy times ahead and an even brighter future with a number of specialist projects on the horizon. We continue to develop all of our existing services to allow innovative approaches to all kinds of contracts, so if you are interested in any of the provisions we can offer, please contact us:
