FROM THE PRESIDENT

These are indeed exciting times for Bowls Southern Cape. This, the first issue of our new quarterly newsletter, S.C. Feathers, goes along with huge excitement and anticipation. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Jaco Visagie for accepting the challenge to make our newsletter a reality. Jaco is fairly new to bowls, but is not afraid to accept this challenge. He is indeed an inspiration to our game and our members. Many thanks to everyone else who has contributed by sending in your articles and helping to make our Newsletter something that our mem-bers will look forward to reading. There is so much “hyp” and buzz about the upcoming Awareness Day that I am confident that we are going to make it a day, not only to be remembered, but one which will be the start of new “happenings” in bowls. Thank you to our bigger Clubs who are assist-ing the smaller ones in filling their greens. SOUTH AFRICANS TO FREE THEIR

FEET ON 27 APRIL

If you‟ve ever wondered how to celebrate the anniver-sary of South Africa‟s step to democracy, Bowls SA is offering a fun solution. They‟re asking all South Afri-cans to gather together on Freedom Day at bowls clubs around the country for a record breaking attempt in support of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and Disability Bowls. The intention is to set an official Guinness World Re-cord by delivering the most bowls in a country within an hour and in the process to raise one million Rand for charity. „We‟re going big,‟ says Kallie Haupt, Bowls SA‟s execu-tive responsible for Promotion and Development at Bowls SA. Bowls has always been a unifying sport in the sense that nobody has an advantage in terms of age, sex or physical build. So, we figured what better way to unite South Africans on Freedom Day than to get them to step out and have some fun for a great cause. „There‟s a bowls club in every city and village of the country,‟ adds Haupt, and it makes sense to use them as a tool to bring the whole nation together. If we can get 50 000 South Africans out there on the 27th then we‟ll have raised a million bucks and we‟re donating every single cent of it. “It‟ll be a spectacular achievement”.

In case you‟re worried about the dress code so synonymous with bowls of yesteryear, Bowls SA president, Debra Ferguson, as-sures us that anything goes. “The wilder the better”, she laughs. “Some players like to lampoon the old styles and dress up in ties and waistcoats, which is good fun, but the sport is far more relaxed these days. You can even play barefoot if you like”. The project has received backing from celebrities, most notably with Jeremy Mansfield, cancer survivor and former host of 94.7‟s Rude Awakening, coming out in support of the effort. Bowls SA is also driving support through Facebook and is asking the public to challenge their favourite celebrities to get onto the greens.

In the week leading up to the 27th we‟re going to ask anybody who has been affected by cancer to change their profile picture to a photo of their feet,” says Rob Zimmerman, the event co-ordinator. “If we can bring South Africans together on this important day, raise the money for charity and increase awareness around cancer then we‟ll have done something remarkable.‟

A NEW LIFE FOR BOWLS The thrust or objective of Promotion and Development is to get more and more peo-ple to play this wonderful game. The outcome of workshops at National and District level was, inter alia, to increase the bowling population by 10, 000 over the next five years. This translates into 7% or on average a net growth of 4 members per Club per annum. How are we going to achieve this? Here are some useful pointers. Firstly we must ensure that present members are happy and enjoy their participa-tion. They are the club‟s best sales and marketing tools and must be sensitized to the need for improving memberships; Consider and introduce anything that will contribute to making the game more at-tractive and accessible. Various actions have already been taken by Clubs, such as business leagues, action bowls, canvassing young people, adopting a more casual dress code, having two starting times for tabs-in and playing under flood lights, and playing different formats of the game. The target for new members in our District has been set at 99 and at the end of February we have registered a net gain of 39. Well done! However, to sustain this improvement every member should accept the responsibility to make a contribution. Remember, bowls can be played by everyone. Remember also that a handsome incentive is paid to clubs by B.S.A. every six months for introducing the most and the highest percentage of new bowlers. This is not to be sneezed at – so, spread the good virus to infect non-bowlers! Next time I will let you know how all clubs have fared. Good Luck & good bowling. Johan Havenga B.S.C. Development

SELECTION OF

PLAYERS FOR INTER

DISTRICTS The Bowls Southern Cape Execu-tive has decided that the official BSA Talent Identification Program [TID] shall in future be utilized for the selection of Inter- District squads. It is the intention to fully implement this policy for the 2011/2012 sea-son. All players wishing to be consid-ered for selection [including play-ers in the current squads] are re-quired to submit three [3] 20x20 assessments by 31 May 2011. Club coaches are fully familiar with the TID assessment process and players are urged to contact one of their coaches for assistance. Assessments submitted must be countersigned by a qualified coach and submit ted to [email protected] For more details contact Kallie Haupt at 044 874 0649 or any of the selectors.

THE UMPIRE’S CORNER

TO BE OR NOT TO BE?

Is the black bowl alive or dead? Well, it all depends on whether the blue bowl is a toucher or not. If it is, then the black bowl is alive and can be meas-ured for shot. Do not remove the blue bowl before measuring. If the blue bowl is not a toucher, it should have been removed when it rolled into the ditch. It must now be removed very carefully. If the black bowl falls into the ditch, it is dead. If it remains teetering on the brink, it is still alive and can be measured for shot. The umpire‟s corner will be a permanent fixture of your newsletter. Please send any questions or comments you may have. If we do not know the answers, we will try to find them. Ellen Truter S.C. SOUTHERN CAPE WELL REPRESENTED AT INTER-DISTRICTS Nine months of team selection, practice and preparation was concluded on the 13

th of March at the

Southern Cape Capping Ceremony when the Southern Cape teams, to represent the district in various inter-district tournaments during March and April, were announced.

The Southern Cape women‟s bowls team started 2011 on a high note in January when they took top honors in the women‟s division of the annual quadrangular between the Boland, Border, Eastern Province and Southern Cape in George. This event, hosted in a joint effort by both the George and Outeniqua Bowling Clubs and having Personal Trust International as proud sponsor, is the big-gest and most prestigious event on the SC Bowls calendar. No fewer than 48 teams (192 provincial players) took part in a display of outstanding bowls over the two days of the past weekend. The tournament comprised three sections on both the Men‟s and the Ladies‟ sides – the Open section, the Senior sec-tion, and the B section – in which teams from each of the four provinces played one another in a round robin format. A large number of spectators at both venues were kept entertained and en-thralled by some high level displays of competitive bowls. The greens at both clubs were very well prepared for this top level tournament and the green keepers are to be complimented on their contribution to the success of the event. This very popular tournament provides young and newly selected provincial players, such as Southern Cape‟s Rosanne Rossouw, the opportunity to grow their game against some of the top provincial and national players and will again be hosted by the Southern Cape next year. From the spectators‟ point of view, with Protea players such as Southern Cape‟s Billy Radloff and Boland‟s Susanna Steyn adding even more to the excitement, this tournament will remain one of the showcase bowling events in the Southern Cape. Con-gratulations to the organizing committee and the Southern Cape on what was adjudged by players and spectators to be a marvelous weekend and a highly enjoyable tournament.

HEIDELBERG TOPS IN PRESIDENT’S DAY

Heidelberg SPAR sponsored a well pre-sented President‟s Day at the Heidelberg Bowling Club on 20 January 2011. It was well attended by local clubs with teams from as far as Mossel Bay and Great Brak also taking part. The day was won by a Heidelberg team, skipped by Francis Wiliams, with the rest of the team being Gerbrandt Rademan, Koos Roberts and Julie Ife. They received the Lombard Cup as well as very generous meat prizes from SPAR. Stilbaai‟s team, with Peter Lockley as skip, was second with Chris Calder‟s team from Swellendam in the third place. All received meat prizes from SPAR. The raffle was won by Francis Williams, which rounded off the day nicely for him. On Tuesday 25 January, the summer Busi-ness/Social league started at the Heidel-berg Club as well. There were a number of first time players and everyone enjoyed the evening.

OUTENIQUA SE SENIOR SPELERS BEHOU TITEL

GREAT BRAK’S AWARENESS DAY

The Great Brak River Bowls Club is looking forward to over-subscribe entrants for the SA Bowls Awareness Day, planned for 27 April 2011. A carnival atmosphere is planned to attract people of all ages. The following groups were targeted for entering the Guinness Book of Records attempt: Schools, other sport clubs (cricket, rugby, tennis, jukskei, soccer), a number of trail walking clubs, the retirement villages in the area, our business league colleagues and the general public. Great Brak is plucking the fruits of a drive to attract new members to the club and at least 10 new members are being coached at the moment. These new members are as enthusiastic about the Awareness Day and have promised to bring their non-playing friends as well.

Spes Bona Motors Besigheidsliga

Mosselbaai Rolbalklub se Besigheidsliga is hierdie jaar weer deur Spes

Bona Motors geborg.

Hierdie jaar se kompetisie was besonder straf
