I always begin summer thinking it won’t end. I feel even though we might

not be away on vacation it is like a vacation for a few good weeks. Flowers

are in bloom, birds and critters visit, the sun comes out and remains a little

longer for all the parties, and everyone seems to be in such a much better

mood. Soon the sun will be setting earlier, the nights will become cooler

and our summer will come to a close. It all seems to have gone by with the

blink of an eye.

Personally I always feel like the end of summer is the beginning of a new

year. Most likely due to the fact that we are in New York and a new school

year will be beginning. Because of this new year feeling it also feels like

things begin to rev up in business and our lives, and I think our Lodge

should follow suit. This meeting will be reuniting and talking about our

For my first letter as 3D President, I wish to thank thedelegates that had attended the 3D Convention in NYfor their confidence in having elected me to serve inthe capacity of President. I would like to thankPresident Mary Andersen and the previous Board ofDirectors for a job well done in our Tremendous Third. The President and Board are volunteers as well asmembers of SON and they, along with previous 3Dboards, have definitely provided us with a ThirdDistrict to be proud of. President Mary has been aterrific role model, and her shoes will be impossible tofill. I am especially grateful that I will be able to rely onher wise counsel during my term.

I have been a member of Sons of Norway for over 30years and have held multiple positions in my local lodgeand on the District Board. I care for our District andour membership. It is my desire, along with anawesome Board of Directors, to raise awareness of thevalue of being a member of the Third District and byextension, Sons of Norway, International. We look formore people to become members and to take a moreactive role in shaping the growth and development ofThe Third District. In the last couple of years the 3D

has taken the steps to reach out to support our 49lodges by creating an LLST (local lodge support team),whether through officer leadership, website, programs, visitations, etc. Under the guidance of Vice PresidentStephen Helmold and LLST chair ZD 7 Dirk Hansen, I hope to continue this ongoing effort and expect to see continuing results. As we look to the future, as yournew President, my vision is to give every member avoice, to develop and promote the use of officertraining for new officers, reduce lapsed membership, and have initiations for new members for every lodge. We have a lot to offer (language camps and classes, scholarships, handicrafts, cooking and heritage classes, heritage programs, sports programs, travelopportunities, Viking Magazine, and outreachprograms) and we should share with our communityespecially our future youngest members.

Thanks to the work of all of our committees we are onour way to a successful two years. I welcome your ideasand would appreciate any help from you to improve ourDistrict. Should you have any comments and orconcerns feel free to email me at [email protected].

There are lodges that are gearing up for a new year ofprograms, a change of officers, new issues and newideas. The organization of Sons of Norway has beenaround for almost 125 years and I expect it will be hereanother 125 and more.

After visiting at the International Meeting inMinneapolis, I can tell you that I am proud of ourThird District delegates for insightful thoughts andcomments. More information will be forthcoming afterall the delegates get their notes to me.

We, in the Third District, are a strong group withdifferences in geography, ages, ideas, and temperament. That being said, I have found we are also a group whowill often share our ideas and mentor those in theirroles and responsibilities and represent their local lodgeand its values to others.

We also are a group that will listen and help ensure afree flow of ideas and challenges from all. Listeninginvolves accepting and respecting the ideas, feelings, behaviors, and experiences of members different fromourselves.

We are trying something new on our District Board inthat we have some Committee Chairpersons withcommittee people in position to assist them in the job.

This also allows the Chair/Director to mentor acommittee person in fulfilling the position at a laterelection time.

As an existing example, we can look to Zone 5—there isa Zone Director, Assistant Zone Director, and twocommittee members on the “Zone 5 Team”. Eachworking hard to establish, retain, and excite existinglodge members. Another example of a committeeapproach is Publicity where we have a Publicity Chair, assists for the TDT, assists with photos for the VikingMagazine, and a web-master.

If your lodge is having difficulty fulfilling roles, perhapsit is time to choose the “committee approach”.Knowing you are part of a team can help develop apositive attitude about that position and develop strongrelationships with your other committee members.Members on a team develop a sense of working for alarger cause, which can provide strong motivation toperform well. They also realize that if they ever needhelp, they can count on a teammate to provide it, andthey are willing to return the favor in the future.

Be a part of the puzzle and join a committee, workingtogether makes a great picture.

Fraternally, Kathy

I want to thank the members of Lodge Brooklyn inhonoring me by having me as their representative at the3rd District Convention. Alice Svege (delegate), NjålSvege (delegate) and Oddbjørg Olsen (alternatedelegate) arrived within minutes of me which made it asmooth registration. They assisted me from the start byintroducing me to everyone from Maine to Florida. With each introduction was a story.

We began with a Memorial service at the St. Mark’sEpiscopal Church designed in the style of the StaveKirke. It was a solemn service with Pastor Simpson, ofSt. Mark’s, giving the invocation and the benediction.Lisa Daehlin, the soloist, and Richard Feingold heraccompanist, sang several solos. There was a tribute tothe deceased by the ringing of a bell for each zone.Pastor Ida Iverson from a Florida Lodge gave thememorial address. It was all very moving.

The evening was Mary Andersen’s Presidents Receptionand Dance. This was a time to relax and share infellowship and dance.

Thursday business began at 8:30 AM sharp. If you werelate you had to pay a fine. If your cell phone went off itwas a $10 fine. They made $70 in cell phones going off!Newly nominated officers and alternates were

introduced. Speeches were made, explanations given, and questions asked and answered. It was interesting.Financials were given and reviewed with manyquestions, explanations, and answers until they wereaccepted. There were 17 resolutions. One resolutionfailed, one withdrawn, one muted, one set aside forfuture, with the remainder passing. Business and votingcame to an end Saturday morning.

Thursday and Friday we has some free time and I wasable to view the folk art and all the baskets and itemsfor the auction. I was really impressed by the rosemalingand hardanger created by the children from the LOVsummer camp.

Saturday evening was the Installation of the newofficers followed by the Grand Banquet. We wereentertained by visiting celebs, Sonny and Cher, VillagePeople, and the great sensation Neil Diamond. Weenjoyed music by our own Ellen and her SwedishMeatballs. It was a night to remember.

Everything came to an end at Applebee’s. Breakfast wasserved by the most handsome men alive with a littlehelp from the backbone of a few hard working women.

Again, thank you for this experience,Elaine Breiland

Potatoes have been an important part of Norwegian cuisine andculture for more than 250 years. They continue to be a stapleingredient in many traditional dishes like dumplings, lompelefse, hash and hasselback potatoes, but have also played asignificant role in Norway’s history.

The potato first originated in the Andes in Latin America whereit had exclusively grown for 10,000 years before the firstEuropeans arrived. Those early settlers then brought the potatoto Portugal in 1567, and with the help from European religiousleaders potatoes eventually made their way to Norway in 1750.Priests and pastors, commonly referred to as “potato priests,”were known for growing potato spuds on the grounds of theirparsonage at the time. They would often move from district todistrict and teach people how to cultivate them on their own.

However, it wasn’t until the Napoleonic wars in the earlynineteenth century when potatoes were fully integrated into theNorwegian diet. The British navy blocked the seas aroundNorway. This eliminated grain imports from Denmark andstruck Norway with famine. In desperate need of a replacement,Norwegians turned to potatoes, and quickly found them to notonly be nutritious but also simple to cook, inexpensive, fillingand easily grown in the harsh Norwegian climate and soilconditions. The humble potato has been a Norwegian favoriteever since.

HasselbackpoteterIngredients

DirectionsPreheat oven to 425°F (215°C).

As you peel the potatoes, drop them into the cold water to prevent discoloring. Slice thepotatoes by placing a peeled potato in thehollow of a large wooden spoon, and slice itin 1/8 inch (1/4 cm) slices ‘till about 1/2inch (1-1/4) cm) from the end. (The spoonprevents the knife from slicing all the waythrough the potato.)

Butter an oven-proof dish. Drain the potatoesand pat them dry with a paper towel. Placethe potatoes side by side, cut side up, in thedish brushed with butter. Brush the potatoeswith melted butter and sprinkle with salt. Ifneeded, brush again with melted butter after30 minutes of baking. Bake for 50 minutes —about 5 minutes before they are completelybaked, sprinkle with grated cheese andpaprika.

It is the intent of Lodge Brooklyn to help preserve the traditionsand history of the Norwegian and American Norwegian culture. Our Lodge sits in a unique place, near the bridge that connectsthese two countries. Many of those who came from Norway in the1900s landed in Brooklyn, and several of these families stayed forgenerations—raising their children, and then their American-borngrandchildren. Woven into our history are both sides of the story.

Lodge Brooklyn has a reputation amongst other Lodges of the Sonsof Norway as being one of the most fun, down to earth, andlighthearted groups within the organization. We always have a goodtime as we gather and share past memories and create new ones ina fun, warm, and welcoming environment. ■
