    Physical Education News By Mrs. Piontek We have had such a great kick off to the year!

    Pumpkins in the Park: Thank you to all the families who came out to support our event! SES has the BEST families! We had a great turn out and money helps fund our 4th grade field trip to JCC as well as equipment purchases for PE! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for joining in the fun!

    What are we doing? We are working so hard in physical education this month on RESPECT! We are modeling and practicing all the different ways we show respect while playing and participating in activity! Solving problems using words and solutions like Rock, Paper, Scissor, Icka-Bicka-Soda-Cracker, or Tea, Cup, Saucer, Out! These are fun easy ways to solve problems and to take turns. Students also feel proud for solving problems! Try them at home.

    Other areas we covered in physical education include: Playground Safety Fire Safety Football Throwing/Kicking Following directions Taking turns/Problem Solving Manipulative Stations Gymnastics

    I’M HOT! We are moving A LOT during our physical education class! Now with the COLD weather, please remember to dress your child in a t-shirt and layers! This helps keep them comfortable and ACTIVE in class. Also, a good pair of athletic shoes helps students be safe!

    TIS THE SEASON: Between Trick or Treat and the up-coming holidays, remember to limit the “sometimes” foods and offer a lot of the “anytime foods”! Limit TV and screen down time after school! Keep them moving! Remember FUTP60 reminds us that 60 minutes of exercise a day is needed to stay healthy!

    Morning Gym: Morning gym has starter for my 3rd and 4th graders from 7:45 – 8:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Please see the schedule for specific dates. Your child does need to fill out the permission slip in order to attend! This is a great extension of our physical education unit! Hope your child can join us! Stay Active and Healthy!

    Happenings in the Music Room By Mrs. Geydoshek

    Kindergarten classes have been busying keeping a steady beat and recognizing high and low pitches. They have done a variety of activities including playing classroom rhythm instruments, xylophones, and drums. They are progressing in finding their singing voices though songs and games.

    The first grade classes are becoming experts at the Do Re Mi hand signs. You may see them using them around school in the hallways. They have had many solo singing opportunities though musical games and songs. They are learning to play melodies on the xylophones and classroom keyboards.

    Second, Third, and Fourth grade students are using music books in class this year. They are getting good at identifying patterns in the songs we are studying. They have had the opportunity to play melodies on the xylophones and classroom keyboards. They have been creating more complex rhythm patterns with classroom rhythm instruments. They are enjoying playing the forte/piano game.

    Third and Fourth grade students are developing their sight singing skills through applying their rhythm reading skills and their knowledge of the Do Re Mi’s.

    Fourth grade is developing their Treble Clef Note Naming skills.

    All classes are working on their songs for the Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 20, “A Holiday of Music”.

    1st Grade News

    Ms. Schmalz has been reading the book The BFG to the class this semester. The students enjoyed trying the frobscottle drink that Raul Dahl describes in the book. We loved it!

    On Friday, October 27 first graders took their first field trip to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. They took a guided nature walk and found many natural treasures. All students participated in a nature bingo game with their guide during their walk. First graders heard and saw many new and interesting things that we could connect with our science unit on plants. Although it was a chilly morning, all the students were very excited about their new experiences at the nature center.

    We celebrated the end of our plant unit by having a plant eating party! The students each brought in a part of the plant we eat, and everyone was able to sample some different plant parts. It was so much fun!

    Great Things Are Happening At SES!!

    Second graders have been working very hard on writing a small moment from their life. To celebrate the end of our unit, the kindergarten classes were invited to come and listen to them read their sto-ries. The second graders were excited to share their hard work. They did a great job!

    First graders went on a little adventure to find a treat to celebrate writing their narrative stories!

    Our FUTP 60 group reminds us that 60 minutes of exercise a day is needed to stay healthy!

    The turnout for Pumpkins in the Park was awesome. SES is truly the best!!

  • As you walk through the hallways of SES, you can’t help but notice the fantastic artwork on display designed by our own students. You will also find some of these wonderful creations throughout this newsletter. Take a minute to stop by and see all the beautiful artwork throughout the school. It’s amazing!!

    We have had a VERY busy fall in Kindergarten…from apple celebration day, to pumpkin farm field trips, to a very special visit from the Saukville Fire Department!

    On our apple day, we did an apple tasting, built some patterns, measured how many apples tall we were, and helped make “classmade” applesauce together. It was delicious!

    Our pumpkin farm field trip was at the beginning of October! We were SO lucky the rain stayed away! Each student picked out a pumpkin and a gourd on their hayride. We also learned about the different trees and what happens to trees throughout the seasons. Looking at all the special trains and train tracks they have at Lammscapes was an extra special treat!

    We also had a very special visit from the Saukville Fire Department. They talked to us about the importance of having a fire exit plan at our homes with our families. They reinforced the principles of “STOP, DROP, and ROLL,” if our clothes catch on fire. They helped make us feel safe and not afraid if a firefighter comes to our home to help during a fire, by dressing in their uniform and equipment. We topped off the visit with a close up look at a fire truck!

    Kindergarten Kapers Hello SES Families!

    It has been a great start to the 2017-18 school year! Thank you to all who have

    participated in the first 2 fundraisers of the school year. The first was a new replacement to the Entertainment Book, which was the Save Around Book. This came from the same company that our second fundraiser is from, Clubs Choice. From Save Around we made close to $1500 and Clubs Choice (which will be delivered for pick up on Tuesday, November 28) we made about $6000! These fundraisers, as well as other money that will be made this school year, will be going toward possible playground updates and iPad/Chromebook purchases for next school year.

    As usual we have already approved money for bussing for each classroom and bussing for 3rd grade Nutcracker in December.

    Thank you to all the Daddies and Daughters who participated in the dance. It was a great time once again! Thank you also to Vanessa Marratt and committee for all your hard work! Hope to see every-one at Family Movie Night on Friday, November 17! Also look for the Cookie Sale which will be coming up on Friday, December 15.

    Lastly, please consider joining SPA for a holiday gathering at our December meeting on Wednesday, December 13 at the Saukville Moose Lodge starting at 6pm.

    Second grade has been celebrating greatness this year! At the end of most days our classrooms can be found invested in our ‘Greatness Circles’. The Greatness Circle can look different from day to day, but we share with each other great things we have seen one another do. It celebrates our students and the great choices they can be found making throughout the day. It quickly became a favorite time of the day for many second graders, and being in the middle of the circle has been described as “feeling like I hit a grand slam!”

    Aside from doing a lot of great things, second grade has also been learning a lot of great things this year! In writing our classes have been focusing on writing about one time we did something. We are stretching this story out using descriptive words and emotions. We have been studying the way some published authors have written, and then are trying to apply that to our own work. We are really seeing some great writing develop!

    In science this quarter we are learning about plants and animals. We have created a snake and a worm to talk about backbones. We are learning about animal adaptations, food chains, and lots more! In social studies we are learning about maps and globes! Students created a map of a playground and of our world. Students should be able to tell all 7 continents, know their own state, and write their address by the end of the unit.

    Fourth graders recently spent the day at Riveredge Nature Center in Newburg. They traveled back in time 10,000 years ago to when the glaciers in Wisconsin retreated. Students enjoyed this “hands on” day by using scientific tools such as soil probes, thermometers and wind meters. They were able to explore the clues the glaciers left behind including kettle, moraine, kame and esker landforms. In addition, students were able to enact how each landform was created. We had a great time moving our classroom to the outdoors to learn and explore!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    3rd grade is enjoying Science at SES. We recently visited Riveredge Nature Center to learn about communities and ecosystems. This supports the unit Mrs. Olson is teaching on ecosystems. Mrs. Voeller has been teaching 3rd graders all about plants and Mrs. Barnes is teaching the Scientific Process with a bottle toss experiment.
    The investigative process is in full motion at SES!
    Eagle Art News By Mrs. Grover
    It is so wonderful to be back and see all the children’s smiling faces! I really missed being in the Art Room and I can’t say how happy I am to be back. I am so lucky to be sharing the room with the amazing Mrs. Strohl, who absolutely loves the students and teaching art at SES!!
    So much has been going on in the Art Room. Students have learned lots about many great artists, Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso, Andy Warhol, Mondrian and more! The students have created some amazing works of art, we are always impressed with their natural ability to be so creative. The halls of SES are like being at an art museum, the walls are filled with grand artworks by our very own Eagles. Take a look when you have a chance!
    Next month, December 14, the Art Department will be having an art show at the high school. This is a great chance to see the new (and amazing) art rooms. You will be able to view art from students throughout the district and grade levels. Please considering checking it out!!
    Honoring Our Vets
    On Friday, November 10 we gathered before school to take some time to remember what our Veterans have done and are doing for us. We had special guests from the Saukville American Legion there to help in raising of the flag!
