FWADA SPRING GALLERY NIGHT 2013 3

FWADA is a unique arts organization in a unique American place. Few cities of Fort Worth’s size are privileged to command such a wealth of major art muse-ums, and fewer still have such a vital community spirit. What truly sets Fort Worth apart, however, is the vigorous, longstanding, clearly defined coopera-tion between the museums, the university art galleries, the non-profit exhibition spaces, and the art dealers, all of which are full working members of FWADA. To fulfill its stated mission to stimulate interest in the visual arts through edu-cational programs, art scholarships, and art competitions, FWADA organizes, funds, and hosts exhibitions of noteworthy art. It sponsors the Fall Gallery Night for members and friends, as well as Spring Gallery Night. All these attainments have created a stable environment that produces a steady stream of top-notch talent, including major local artists who exhibit their work nationally and internationally. Newcomers are frequently dazzled by the quality of work being created in every medium and style. Their passion rein-vigorates Fort Worth patrons who have become habituated to the riches that surround them, reminding them anew that the most authentic cultural connec-tion they can make is the one that affords direct communication with the artists who interpret and illuminate the life experience they share through common background and interests. Although the city is justly recognized for its cosmo-politan worldview, it is the local artists and their devoted collectors who are the lifeblood of the Fort Worth art market. The members of the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association are pledged to the maintenance of a high standard of ethical conduct and professional integrity, these businesses furnish a model that gallery associations in other cities might do well to emulate. FWADA is to be commended for its important role as a contributor to the cultural and esthetic richness of Fort Worth.– Suzanne Deats

Rockport 9 Paints texasThe Rockport 9 is a group of artists drawn together for their love of painting “plein aire”, focusing on areas where they recently traveled. The group includes Lisa Baer, Angalee DeForest, Anita Diebel, Susan Forrest, Mary Frazier, Caro Jackson, Carol Koutnik, Betty Shamel, and Ann Reimer, all Rockport residents. Their “strokes” are varied, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, collage and pastel. Many of the paintings are finished on location and others form an idea to be completed in the studio. With Texas as their backdrop, the sky is the limit for the Rockport 9 who record, in their own artistic manner, both the rustic beauty and the lush backdrop that abounds in our state.

Rich Ariola is an emerging artist from Las Vegas, NV. His creative use of found objects is very different than most artists that create works using recycled materials. He pays tremendous attention to detail and his works are pristine. In the photo-graph, the eagle’s wings are com-prised of all pre 1982 pennies. This show is not to be missed. One will, also, see new works by Rebecca Low, Nic Noblique, Terry Jones, Michael Bane, Nina Winters, Kent Maris, photo transformations by Michael Sibley, and jewelry by Dale Ousley and Juliette Edgerton.

Matthew Collings and emma Biggs: suspicious Utopias

Prominent British arts writer/television presenter/artist and his partner, artist and historian Emma Biggs, bring to FWCA a large scale installation using Merlin Carpenter’s critique as a platform for the explanation of abstract painting, as well as their collaborative works on paper and a very special custom publication which, instead of merely cataloging this exhibition, is actually part of it. The show opens to the public on FWADA’s Spring Gallery Night.

tom Hollenback MUtaBilisCreating objects of art often bridging the concepts of painting and sculpture, Hollenback uses fluorescent acrylic panels mounted on sculptural wood or steel sub-structures, resulting in sculptures that appear to be illuminated from within. With his “Volumetric Paintings”, Hollenback again works with the intersection of painting and sculpture. Using small, rough-cut blocks of wood as forms, he casts acrylic paint into the wood forms, often leaving pieces of the wood attached when the forms are removed. Conceptually, the process creates a contemporary, organic, sculptural object.

As stated by the artists: “We draw no line between our lives and our art. We are the photographers and the photographed; our home is our canvas, our family is our sub-ject, and our actions are our content. It is our hope that our work speaks to the deep ambivalence of suburban life—that one can love one’s life, one’s possessions, one’s hus-band and wife, one’s children—but still wonder what might have been. Our work is an extended family trip down the rabbit hole, tunneling through myths and realities, with no end in sight, but strength in our companions, and our journey.” art oN the BoUlevarD4319A Camp Bowie Boulevard,Fort Worth, TX 76107817.737.6368www.artontheboulevard.com, [email protected]:00 – 9:00 pm “spring Fever” featuring new works by regional art-ist including Loretta LaMothe, Gloria Sepp, Brad Jensen, Dolores Hibbard, Gale Johnston, Sara Joseph, Tosca Engisch, Bob Fox, Clara Williams, Judy Wolf, Eva Snapka, Jennifer Stufflebeam, Samira Syed, Antonio Lanza and Sean Long. Gallery 761021401 Jones Street, Fort Worth, TX [email protected]:00 am – 8:00 pmJoshua Elliotself-congratulatory nonsenseAll art stands on the embers of an old idea, waiting to be consumed by a change in the social tide. We spend our lives filling white rooms with per-sonal furies, childhood intimations, and portrayals of imposed self-impor-tance. Walls become tightly packed with alternate realities, lit with sterile beams of hope. It is a place unregulated and impossibly personal. We project an image of ourselves in the mirror each morning, mentally masking and emotionally processing, as we see fit. The change for better or for worse is inevitable. It is the time between that change which interests me most.

On Gallery Night, Fort Worth’s newest non-profit artspace will feature its grand opening exhibitions, street immersion (s) and entertaining the life. street immersion(s) features detailed drawings by artist Linda Lucia Santana, inspired by her research in Toluca and Mexico City, Mexico and Santana’s self-immersion in Mexican culture and identity. Santana’s drawings reflect her fascination with Mexican street vendors throughout her stay, and her ongoing inter-est in Mexican and Mexican-American folklore and song. entertaining the life, features two site-specif-ic displays by artists Desha Dauchan and Joy Ude, both challenging representations of African American masculinity in historical and contemporary film. Using narrative-based experimental filmmaking (Dauchan) and iconic mixed-media constructions (Ude), these artists suggest that bodies of African American male entertainers are often trapped between conflicting ideologies: reality and fantasy. WoCA Projects is located inside Fort Worth’s budding Riverside Arts District, a local community of artist studios and diverse arts venues.
