DEEP FAMILY PROPELS TACITUS DOWN DERBY TRAILBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Prince Khalid Abdullah's Judd-monte Farms has come tanta-

lizingly close to winning America's premier classic—twice.

The premier international breeding and racing program was second in the 2000 Kentucky Derby (G1) with Aptitude and second again in 2003 with favorite Empire Maker, who redeemed himself by winning the Belmont Stakes (G1).

Juddmonte is back this year with a strapping gray/roan colt named Tacitus, a homebred son of Tapit and the first foal out of the farm's multiple grade 1-winning champion Close Hatches. From a qualifying points standpoint, the colt has already earned his way into the Derby starting gate with 50 points he got for winning the March 9 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in track-record time.

Now, in the April 6 Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G2), Tacitus has to prove to Abdullah he belongs in the Derby.

"This far along, we are hoping we end up in the Derby, and we think we have a horse that is well-bred and suitable for the next step. I think the distance is going to suit," said Garrett O'Rourke, manager of Juddmonte's American breeding operation. "We are to the point where you just have to see if he's good enough."

Tacitus was not bred for nor physically suited to a big campaign at 2, but the couple of races trainer Bill Mott gave him were important toward setting him up for success at 3, according to O'Rourke.

"He has a lovely big, long stride, and everything came easy to him. Early speed? No, but he is not the physical

type nor bred to be that type. We had no expectation that he should be showing us early speed," O'Rourke said.

"For a Tapit, he has a good mind. (Tapits) are very talented horses, and some of them can get a little bit hot, but so far Tacitus has not displayed any of those characteristics," O'Rourke continued. "Close Hatches has

a lovely temperament, so I think that comes through. That gave him the mental edge to move forward."

Close Hatches, a daughter of Juddmonte homebred and grade 1 winner First Defence, was an extraordinary racehorse. After breaking her maiden at first asking by seven lengths at Gulfstream Park, the 3-year-old filly trained by Mott won her first graded stakes two starts later when she won the Gazelle Stakes (G2). She went on to win six more graded stakes, five of them in grade 1 company. Close Hatches earned Eclipse champion older mare

honors in 2014 for her three grade 1 wins and one grade 2 win out of six starts that year.

Tacitus on the way to the gate for the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs

(continued on page 5)

If Tacitus gets beaten (in the Wood), then he needs

an excuse or some bad luck to go on to the Derby. Otherwise, we’ll regroup, but we’re hoping that is

not going to be the case.”

When Close Hatches was retired to the paddocks, Gainesway's Tapit—the leading sire of his freshman class and a top-three sire his second- and third-crop years—was on the short list of mates.

"A lot of science can go into the matings, and you try to put as much thought into them as you can, and yet it always comes down to the old adage of breeding the best to the best," O'Rourke said. "Tapit is one of those stallions that fit Close Hatches, but he fits an awful lot of mares. They are lovely, sound horses that run the whole way through. You want to blend the best traits possible, but you don't overthink it. At the end of the day, the important trait you want to pass above all else is the ability to run fast."

Juddmonte was so happy with Tacitus as a foal that Close Hatches was bred to Tapit again in 2017, which produced a colt that is a yearling, and the mare is scheduled to be bred to Tapit for a third season this week, according to O'Rourke.

"Tacitus has certainly encouraged us to feel we are on the right track," he said.

Close Hatches also has produced a 2-year-old filly by Malibu Moon named Atheer and had a colt Feb. 21 by Curlin.

First Defence has a strong presence on this year's Derby trail, as well, as the broodmare sire of two contenders. The other is Sunland Park Derby (G3) runner-up Anothertwistafate, who is ranked 16th on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 30 points.

Anothertwistafate is out of the First Defence mare Imprecation, whom agent James Delahooke bought for 130,000 guineas (US$223,246) at the 2013 Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sale. Imprecation hails from a productive Juddmonte family as the daughter of multiple grade/group winner Media Nox, which makes Imprecation a half

sister to multiple group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado (by Storm Cat), group 1-placed, graded stakes winner and graded stakes producer Mirabilis (by Lear Fan), and group 2 winner Burning Sun (by Danzig).

Imprecation's second foal is Anothertwistafate, a son of Scat Daddy who sold for $360,000 to bloodstock agent Alistair Roden at the 2018 Ocala Breeders' Sales June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale. The colt now races for Peter Redekop and is trained by Blaine Wright.

First Defence, by Unbridled's Song, was a grade 1-placed stakes winner at 3, winning the Long Branch Breeders' Cup Stakes at Monmouth Park and finishing second in the King's Bishop Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. At 4, he won the seven-furlong Forego Handicap (G1) and six-furlong Jaipur Stakes (G3T) and was second in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2).

Now standing in Saudi Arabia, First Defence has found modest success as a stallion, having sired 10 black-type winners out of eight crops to race. He was represented by two grade/group stakes winners in his first crop—Close Hatches and Dundonnell, who won the Sprint Cup (G2) at Sha Tin and won or placed in six other group stakes. First Defence sired two other grade/group winners in Antonoe, who won the 2017 Longines Just a Game Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park, and Irish Jasper, who won the 2016 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) at Keeneland and two grade 3 stakes.

First Defence's daughters are among his strongest performers, accounting for six of his black-type winners and generating an Average Earnings Index of 1.95 compared to 1.16 for his male runners. As might be expected, First Defence is off to a solid start as a broodmare sire with seven winners and two black-type winners from 21 starters to date.

"He might be like Secretariat, who everyone said was a better broodmare sire than a sire," O'Rourke said. "We bred good Juddmonte mares to him, and those mares are producing a lot of the good runners at the moment. Not taking anything away from First Defence, but those mares have very strong pedigrees."

What that depth of family can do is evident in Tacitus.

"Close Hatches is not big as in tall, but she is very strong with very good bone and muscle," O'Rourke said. "She is just a solid mare and the type you'd love to have 20 or 30 of in your barn, but we're happy to have one.

"As for Tacitus, I saw him in December and did not see him again until February and thought he'd made a big step forward, growing into his frame. Bill seems very happy with where he is. He is a big horse that still has a lot of growing to do, so the improvement is potentially there for him as he matures. If he gets beaten (in the Wood), then he needs an excuse or some bad luck to go on to the Derby. Otherwise, we'll regroup, but we're hoping that is not going to be the case." BH

SANTA ANITA'S CANCELED RACES DEPRESS U.S. HANDLEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

The cancellation of Santa Anita Park racing from March 9-28, the loss

of three stakes for 3-year-olds, and rescheduling of other major stakes caused a 2.83% drop in U.S. handle and a 2.69% decrease in purses for March compared to a year ago, according to figures released April 5 by Equibase.

Santa Anita shelved racing in response to a rash of fatalities during racing and training. The Arcadia, Calif., track was forced to reschedule key races but decided to outright cancel three stakes for 3-year-olds: the San Felipe Stakes (G2), originally scheduled for March 9; Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) for fillies, originally scheduled for March 10; and the China Doll Stakes scheduled for March 9.

The impact was a drop in total U.S. wagering from nearly $972.4 million in March 2018 to just more than $944.8 million last month. Without several races run, total purses also dropped from just shy of $81.8 million a year ago to $79.6 million last month.

Average wagering per race day was not as much, dropping 0.64% to $3,047,851 for 310 days. The average purses per race day dropped even less, falling 0.49% to $256,784.

Year to date, total U.S. wagering is down 3.49% and average wagering per race day is also down 3.04%. Total U.S. purses are staying stable, up 0.77% to more than $227 million through the end of March, and average purses per race day are up 1.25% to $269,039. BH

GRAY ATTEMPT, IMPROBABLE WORK TOWARD ARKANSAS DERBYBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

Sugar Bowl Stakes winner Gray Attempt and Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity (G1) winner Improba-

ble both worked April 5 in preparation for the upcom-ing Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park.

One of the final two preps on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the April 13 Arkansas Derby offers a total of 170 points to the first four finishers.

Dwight Pruett's multiple stakes winner Gray Attempt turned in a bullet five-furlong move in :58 3/5 for trainer William Fires at Oaklawn, the fastest of eight at the distance. The breeze was the first for the son of Graydar since taking the March 23 Gazebo Stakes at the Arkansas oval. The 3-year-old earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with his win in the Jan. 25 Smarty Jones Stakes but finished off the board one start later in the Southwest Stakes (G3), both at Oaklawn.

Breezing six furlongs at Oaklawn for trainer Doug O'Neill Friday was fellow Arkansas Derby hopeful One Flew South, a 3-year-old son of the late Giant's Causeway. The dark bay colt completed the move in 1:13 2/5.

Owned by Zedan Racing Stables, One Flew South broke his maiden on debut Nov. 30 at Turfway Park but just missed the board in his 2019 debut, finishing fifth in the Feb. 24 Mine That Bird Derby at Sunland Park.

Working for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert on the West Coast, Improbable went six furlongs Friday morning in 1:14 flat at Santa Anita Park. The move

was also the best of eight at the distance.

Owned by WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, and Starlight Racing, Improbable impressed early at 2, following his maiden win with back-to-back victories in the Nov. 2 Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs and Dec. 8 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity at Los Alamitos Race Course. The son of City Zip missed by a neck in his 2019 debut to Long Range Toddy in a division of the Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn.

Improbable ranks 19th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 25 points. BH

AVIE'S FLATTER CHARGES TO VICTORY IN TRANSYLVANIABy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Patience, always a useful attribute in the racing game, sometimes is needed over generations.

That kind of patience paid off April 5 for owner-breeder Ivan Dalos as his homebred Avie's Flatter rallied between horses and stormed through the stretch to win the $150,000 Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland in his 2019 debut.

Avie's Flatter, a son of Flatter who picked up his fourth win in five starts for trainer Josie Carroll, is out of the unraced Empire Maker mare Avie's Empire.

"Avie's Empire was a talented runner who was unable to race because of an injury," Carroll said. "She had a lot of promise. In fact, she was talented enough that she was the workmate for our 2011 Queen's Plate winner, Inglorious."

On Friday, Avie's Flatter, the third winner from as many starters for his dam, carried the torch in the 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-olds that saw eight start. Avie's Flatter, with multiple Eclipse Award winner Javier Castellano up, rated in fourth or fifth as Onthewaytonevrland set the pace through a half-mile in :48.23 and six furlongs in 1:12.64 on the firm turf.

That run set up a blanket finish in which the top four finishers completed the race within two lengths of one another. In that crowded stretch run, Avie's Flatter—bottled up until early stretch, where he was shifted to the four path—appeared perfectly comfortable. Avie's Flatter edged clear in deep stretch and had enough to hold off a late charge from favored Henley's Joy, a two-time stakes winner who raced at the back of the pack into the stretch.

"I really liked the way he did it today," Castellano said. "I've been studying the horse since last year. (I) rode against (him). I like the way he does everything. He can be on the lead. He can cover up. Today, he broke a little slow. I didn't rush it. (Considering) the layoff and the way he performed today—very amazing."

Avie's Flatter completed the distance in 1:42.86 and paid $10, $4.80, and $3.80. Henley's Joy returned $4 and $3.20. The Black Album paid $4.40 to show,

earning his first United States graded-stakes placing after posting a group 3 win in France last year.

In preparing for his first start since mid-November, Avie's Flatter completed a string of works in South Florida ahead of the race.

"We had some pretty solid works at Palm Meadows," Carroll said. "I thought he was in good order, but I did say to Javier, 'Keep him covered up a little bit and make sure you have some horse to finish, because it has been a while since he ran.'"

Colleen Dalos, daughter of owner Ivan Dalos, said she knew Avie's Flatter had talent from the start.

"The only question we had was about his best surface, and we felt like he was better on the turf," said Dalos, who is helping to manage the stable and learning the racing and breeding game from her father, who has 40 years of experience in racing and has won multiple graded stakes. "It looked today like we were right about that."

Last year, Avie's Flatter won stakes on the turf and the all-weather surface at Woodbine. In his one loss, Avie's Flatter ran fourth in the Summer Stakes (G1T) on the Woodbine turf, a race won by Fog of War in which Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) contender War of Will finished second.

Bred in Ontario by Dalos' Tall Oaks Farm, Avie's Flatter is a half brother to stakes winner Avie's Mineshaft. BH

LADY PAULINE IMPRESSES IN DEBUT WIN AT KEENELANDBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

When it comes to success on the racetrack, some-times it's all in the family.

A 4 1/2-furlong maiden race proved to be of little challenge to Stonestreet Stables' homebred Lady Pauline, who dominated in gate-to-wire fashion to take the sprint by 9 3/4 lengths April 5 at Keeneland.

"We were expecting it, but it's a first race," said Stonestreet owner Barbara Banke. "(She's) a 2-year-old, and I'm always nervous."

A half sister to Cartier Award winner Lady Aurelia—who also broke her maiden on debut at 2 at Keeneland—Lady Pauline broke on top and bumped briefly with Banana Pepper before shaking free to take the lead.

Kolten's Court gave chase around the turn in second followed by Thirsty Junior in third. Racing in the middle of the pack, Two Dot made her bid for the front at the top of the stretch and dueled with Thirsty Junior.

Lady Pauline made quick work of her competition

in midstretch and shrugged off the pair with ease. Under mild urging from jockey John Velazquez, the filly steadily widened her winning margin to the finish. Final time for the race was :51.71 on a track listed as good.

Bred in Kentucky and trained by Wesley Ward, Lady Pauline is the fifth winner from six starters out of the Forest Wildcat mare D'Wildcat Speed and the first by Munnings. The mare, who was named Puerto Rico's Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old filly of 2003, was purchased by Stonestreet at the 2005 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. She produced a Medaglia d'Oro filly in 2019 and was open in 2018.

A multiple group 1 winner in Europe, Lady Aurelia was campaigned for the majority of her career by Stonestreet Stables and Peter Leidel. The daughter of Scat Daddy was retired to join Stonestreet's broodmare band in 2018 with a 5-2-1 record from 10 starts and $834,945 in earnings.

"She was always on the list as a keeper," Banke said of Lady Pauline. "We're so glad to have another filly from the fabulous D'Wildcat Speed." BH

THREE THINGS TO WATCH: A SUPER SATURDAY OF DERBY PREPSBy Bob Ehalt

It's Super Saturday on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.Three major stakes—the Wood

Memorial Presented by NYRA Bets (G2), Toyota Blue Grass (G2), and Santa Anta Derby (G1)—boasting 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top four finishers may add some long-awaited clarity April 6 to the Triple Crown chase. Then again, confusion could again be the order of the day—although, at the very least, the bubble will be set up for the final two qualifying races April 13 when the Derby field of 20 will finally come into focus.

1. 'Game' Time for Baffert? The 3-year-old debut of reigning division

champ Game Winner did not go exactly as planned. Trained by two-time Triple Crown winner Bob Baffert and owned by Gary and Mary West, the 2-year-old male champion made his first start since winning the Nov. 2 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup

Juvenile (G1) and finished second—a nose behind Omaha Beach—in a division of the Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park March 16. Though it was Game Winner's first loss in five career starts, he ran well off a layoff

of more than four months. Afterward, Gary West said Game Winner was at about 85% fitness for the Rebel and that he figures to be at 90-95% for the Santa Anita Derby.

In one regard, the Santa Anita Derby is not a must-win for Game Winner, whose 45 qualifying points have likely secured a spot in the Run for the Roses. Yet handicappers will be keeping a close eye on him to see if losing that stretch duel was just a glitch or a sign that he's another juvenile champ/young Breeders' Cup winner who struggles to dominate at 3. The answer is particularly important because Game Winner could be the betting favorite in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), preferred status that belonged to the past six winners of the race.

2. Who Will Punch Their Tickets in the Toyota Blue Grass?

Of Saturday's three preps, the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland will have the most profound impact on the Kentucky Derby field. None of the 14 starters was among the top 20 3-year-olds in the Road to the Kentucky Derby series after last weekend's preps, and with 100 and 40 points awarded to the top two finishers, at least two of them should be ensconced in the field for the opening leg of the Triple Crown.

Somelikeithotbrown (20 points, 21st), Signalman (18, 23rd), Vekoma (10, 30th), and Win Win Win (10, 31st) are the closest to the cutoff, so the battle for third and fourth in the Blue Grass could produce a very lively stretch duel if they are involved.

3. Will Tacitus Emerge from Hidden Scroll's Shadow?

Go back to February and the sport was buzzing about the possibility of a highly talented, inexperienced Juddmonte Farms colt playing a starring role in the Kentucky Derby. That could indeed happen but not in

the expected manner.Juddmonte's Hidden Scroll was the talk of the

industry after winning his Jan. 26 debut by 14 lengths. The hype was so strong that not only was he favored when he made his second start in the Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), he was also favored in the Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1), even after finishing fourth in the Fountain of Youth. A disappointing sixth-place finish in the Florida Derby knocked Hidden Scroll off the Derby trail, but Juddmonte still figures to be represented on the first Saturday in May.

Tacitus won the March 9 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2), and, with 50 qualifying points, his spot in the Kentucky Derby is locked up. Yet how he runs in the Wood Memorial will provide evidence of how he would fit against the division's best runners. His victory by 1 1/4 lengths in the Tampa Bay Derby was impressive under any conditions, but to cover the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.90 in just his third career start and first at 3 speaks well for Tacitus' quality and trainer Bill Mott's work with him.

Yet the question begging for an answer in the Wood involves whether he, unlike Hidden Scroll, can move forward off a powerful performance early in his career and again ignite buzz for a Juddmonte 3-year-old. BH

RACES TO WATCH

FULL BROTHER TO SHARED BELIEF TO DEBUT AT KEENELANDBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

Making the first start of his career in a $79,000 maiden special weight over seven furlongs April

6 at Keeneland, Nimet Arif Kurtel's homebred 3-year-old Shared Legacy has big shoes to fill.

Out of the Storm Cat mare Common Hope, the Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride is a full brother to Shared Belief, who dominated on the track between 2013 and 2015, earning five grade 1 scores and more than $2.9 million in purses for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Named champion 2-year-old colt of 2013, Shared Belief suffered a non-displaced fracture to his right hip while racing in the Charles Town Classic Stakes (G2). Although he briefly returned to training, the winning gelding fell victim to an episode of colic and died in December 2015.

Shared Legacy was entered in the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, but Kurtel made the decision to retain the bay colt and race him when he failed to meet his reserve and RNA'd on a final bid of $1.9 million.

Common Hope foaled a Tapit filly in 2017 and was bred back to Candy Ride in 2019.

Trained by Murat Sancal, Shared Legacy will break from post 10 in Saturday's 13-horse field and will partner with jockey James Graham.

Joining Shared Legacy in the field is 3-year-old Honest Mischief. A Juddmonte Farms homebred, the son of Into Mischief is out of the Seattle Slew mare Honest Lady and boasts his own famous connection by way of his half brother First Defence.

A son of the late Unbridled's Song, First Defence earned grade 1 honors at 4 for trainer Bobby Frankel when he took the 2008 Forego Handicap at Saratoga Race Course. He retired in October that year and entered stud at Juddmonte in 2009.

The sire of champion older mare Close Hatches, First Defence stood at Juddmonte until 2016 when he was sold to Haif Stud in Saudi Arabia.

Trained by Chad Brown, Honest Mischief will break from post 11 under Javier Castellano.

Rounding out entrants with notable siblings is Ry's the Guy, the 14th live foal out of group 1 winner and Royal Academy mare Sleepytime. The 3-year-old son of Distorted Humor is a half brother to group 3 winners Gentleman's Deal and Hathal.

Owned by Lothenbach Stables, Ry's the Guy was bred in Kentucky by Tenth Street Stables and is trained by Ian Wilkes. He will break from post 3 and partner with Chris Landeros. BH

THE KEENELAND APRIL SALE

KEENELAND JUVENILE SALE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR KATIERICHBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

When Keeneland took its 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale off the shelf this spring, staff at KatieRich

Farms near Midway, Ky., welcomed the opportunity for another venue at which to offer their horses.

Larry and Karen Doyle, owners of KatieRich, have a long history of selling their stock as yearlings, only occasionally selling a 2-year-old under their own shingle or through other vendors.

The revamped Keeneland April Sale, last held in 2014, is scheduled for April 9 and includes a new horses of racing age portion. The sale begins at 2 p.m. ET. The presale breeze show workouts will take place beginning at 11 a.m. April 8. From 73 cataloged for the 2-year-old sale, 33 juveniles had been withdrawn as of April 4.

"Nobody knows what it's going to be like; I'm excited," said KatieRich Farm manager Mark Hubley.

"Since we're based 15 minutes away, this is kind of like farm-to-market for us. We hope this is an opportunity for us going forward."

To acclimate to the sale surroundings and to allow the horses plenty of time to exercise over the Keeneland synthetic training track and main track when it opened March 15, KatieRich relocated its eight-horse consignment from the farm to the Lexington track in December.

"They have been here since Dec. 15," Hubley said. "I've been clocking them (in morning workouts). This year the track has been really good. We've been very happy with the surface."

Hubley said the 2-year-olds being offered by KatieRich are homebreds, and seven were buybacks when offered as yearlings last year, although one has not been through the sales ring previously.

"It's very much a home product," he said. "These are horses that were RNA'd as yearlings, and if we do better than the RNA prices, then we're ahead and we may hit a home run or two. Some were bred on marginally hefty stud fees."

THE KEENELAND APRIL SALE

Leading the KatieRich offerings is Make Us Smile (Hip 119), a son of Empire Maker, who stood for a $100,000 fee when this year's 2-year-old crop was conceived in 2016. The April 5, 2017, foal was produced from Her Smile, a grade 1-winning daughter of Include purchased by KatieRich for $1.5 million at the 2014 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Make Us Smile was bought back on a $175,000 final bid when offered at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Quick Passage (Hip 127) is a daughter of Candy Ride and the first foal produced from grade 3-placed Journey On. Journey On was bought by KatieRich for $240,000 from James B. Keogh at the 2016 Keeneland November sale while carrying Quick Passage in utero. Quick Passage, born April 1, 2017, went through the Keeneland September ring and was bought back on a final bid of $160,000.

Urban Diva (Hip 118), a filly from the deceased stallion City Zip, is a half sister to stakes-placed City Diva produced from Harlotry Holiday, a Harlan's Holiday half sister to grade 1 winner Sky Diva and multiple stakes winner and multiple grade 1-placed Quick Little Miss. A May 12, 2017, foal, Urban Diva was a $47,000 Keeneland September buyback.

In addition to being a viable marketplace for some of KatieRich's yearlings that go unsold, the Keeneland 2-year-old sale could be targeted by the farm in the future, Hubley said.

"I hope this is an opportunity going forward," Hubley said. "We have a couple of mares whose yearlings we never sell because they look immature, and then they go on to become nice horses. I think it will be an opportunity for us if we know this sale

is going to happen every year. We might skip the yearling sale with some and come right here."

Hubley said the Keeneland sale catalog reflects the reality facing consignors who have a busy agenda during the 2-year-olds in training sale season and have to adjust to another sale on the calendar.

"(Keeneland has to) get re-established, plus they are conflicting with other sales," he said. "It's inconvenient for a lot of them to come here for this sale. But, historically, the buyers have been very, very picky here, and I'm hoping we have a leg up." BH

GHOSTZAPPER SON MONSTER MASH TO STUD IN WEST VIRGINIABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Monster Mash, a winning son of Ghostzapper and out of the family of champion Sacahuista,

has been retired to stud at Bybee Road Farm south of Charles Town, W.Va.

The 10-year-old stallion raced from 3 to 9 at 14 racetracks and compiled a 14-6-3 record out of 47 starts. He retired with $343,492 in earnings.

"I claimed him to make him a stallion because his pedigree is super, and he was fast," said Dennis Bybee. "He looks a lot like his sire."

Monster Mash hit a career-high Equibase Speed Rating of 113 when he won a $67,000 claiming race at Saratoga Race Course in 2015 going seven furlongs in 1:22.51. He equaled or exceeded a 100 ESF in seven other races.

Bred in Kentucky by Ed and Marilyn Seltzer, Monster Mash is out of the stakes-winning Crafty Prospector daughter Rose Frances, who is also the dam of graded-placed winner Sea Level Drive (by Malibu Moon) and stakes-placed winner Cascade Rose (by Giant's Causeway). Rose Frances is out of the grade 1-placed stakes winner Far Flying, a half sister to

1987 champion 3-year-old filly and three-time grade 1 winner Sacahuista, who was the dam of three-time leading Chilean sire Hussonet.

Monster Mash has already started covering mares and is available at $3,500 to approved mares. BH

BROWN CHASES ANOTHER APPALACHIAN WITH REGAL GLORYBy BloodHorse Staff

Paul Pompa Jr.'s Regal Glory, run-ner-up in the Feb. 3 Sweetest Chant

Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park, heads a field of 11 3-year-old fillies in the $200,000 Appalachian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association (G2T) April 7 at Keeneland.

The daughter of Animal Kingdom is trained by Chad Brown, who has won this race three times—with Dayatthespa (2012), Lady Eli (2015), and last year with Rushing Fall.

Regal Glory broke her maiden at first asking in October and won the Nov. 11 Stewart Manor Stakes over six furlongs on the outer turf at Aqueduct Racetrack before missing by 2 1/2 lengths to A Bit Special in her season debut, the one-mile Sweetest Chant.

Regular rider Jose Ortiz has the mount from post 9.Brown also will send out Juddmonte Farms'

homebred Clause, a Speightstown filly who won her only start going a mile Feb. 9 at Gulfstream. Clause will break from the inside under Irad Ortiz Jr.

Also figuring to garner attention from patrons Sunday is Three Chimneys Farm homebred Princesa

Carolina. Trained by Kenny McPeek, the daughter of Tapit out of grade 1 winner Pure Clan came off a four-month layoff to run second in the March 2 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream. A troubled fifth in the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland last fall, Princesa Carolina will be ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. from post 5. BH

FEEDBACK AIMS FOR ANOTHER POSITIVE REVIEW IN BEAUMONTBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

After registering sprint wins in her first two starts, Klaravich Stables' Feedback will stick with one

turn for her third start: the $150,000 Beaumont Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select (G3) April 7 at Keene-land.

The about-seven-furlong Beaumont for 3-year-old fillies has attracted a field of eight, with Feedback drawing the outside post for her Eclipse Award-winning connections of trainer Chad Brown and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

In just one start at 2, Feedback gave fans plenty to remember as the daughter of Violence demolished a maiden special weight field at Saratoga Race Course, drawing off to an eight-length score in that 6 1/2-furlong test. Rested until Feb. 2, Feedback was ready off the bench for Brown as she won her graded stakes debut, gamely holding off Bye Bye J for a half-length score in the Forward Gal Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

Both efforts have been flattered a bit as the runners-

up from each have come back to win their next starts. Bye Bye J won an optional-claiming allowance race March 14 at Oaklawn Park, and last year Takecharge Mirella scored her maiden win in her next start at Saratoga.

In a field with four other stakes winners and two other fillies who are stakes-placed, Feedback figures to be tested Sunday.

Trainer Bob Baffert will send out Mark Mathiesen, George Bolton, Barry Hall, Barry Lipman, and Andrew Molasky's Mother Mother, who won last year's Rags to Riches Stakes going the one-turn mile at Churchill Downs and placed in a pair of grade 1 tests. Mother Mother, a daughter of Pioneerof the Nile, cuts back to one-turn racing after finishing fourth to Bellafina in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G2) Feb. 9 at Santa Anita Park.

LNJ Foxwoods' Fancy Dress Party, perfect in three starts for trainer Ben Colebrook, enters off an easy win in her stakes debut—the Glitter Woman Stakes Jan. 5 at Gulfstream. The daughter of Munnings scored her debut victory at Keeneland last fall, winning a maiden special weight race on a sloppy track.

Also entered off a stakes win is Bonne Chance Farm's Iva, who picked up her third win in four starts when she closed from sixth for a clear victory in the

Cincinnati Trophy Stakes Feb. 1 on the all-weather surface at Turfway Park. Trained by Wesley Ward, the daughter of Scat Daddy finished second to Bye Bye J in the House Party Stakes Dec. 8 on the dirt at Gulfstream.

Gary Barber's Power Gal, trained by Mark Casse, will look to bounce back from a seventh-place finish in the Honeybee Stakes (G3) won by stablemate Chocolate Kisses. Before that March 9 effort at Oaklawn, Power Gal won the Martha Washington Stakes there Feb. 2. BH

DEVAUX TO MAKE KEENELAND TRAINING DEBUT IN APPALACHIANBy BloodHorse Staff

The name Cherie DeVaux in the trainer column of the Keeneland program might be new to fans, but

she is well-known in the racing community. DeVaux, who is married to Central Kentucky-based bloodstock agent David Ingordo, was closely associated with champion Lady Eli when she worked for trainer Chad Brown.

DeVaux, who spent eight years with Brown, obtained her trainer's license in 2018. She earned her first victory March 29 at Gulfstream Park.

On April 7, DeVaux will send out her first Keeneland starter, Dixiana Farms' Primela, in the $200,000 Appalachian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association (G2T).

Primela, a 3-year-old daughter of Orpen, is one of about a dozen horses DeVaux is training at Keeneland.

The filly finished fourth in the March 2 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream after making her first seven starts in France.

"She is a lovely filly and has quite a lot of energy," DeVaux said. "She is training really well. I couldn't ask for her to be doing any better."

DeVaux said Primela benefited from her North American debut in the Herecomesthebride.

"She has mostly been running in sprints where she was forwardly placed," DeVaux said. "In the Herecomesthebride, she was farther back than what would have been ideal. But she came with a really nice run and got a lot out of the race both educationally and fitness-wise. In the Appalachian, we hope she is not so far back."

DeVaux is from the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., area, and her family is involved in Standardbred racing.

Her brother Jimmy has won more than 5,000 races as a driver/trainer. DeVaux gravitated toward the Thoroughbred world when she became a stable worker for Chuck Simon at Saratoga Race Course. She spent six years working for Simon before transferring to the Brown barn, where she became an assistant.

Lady Eli, who won the 2015 Appalachian, sold in foal to War Front for the sale-topping price of $4.2 million at the 2018 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

DeVaux plans to visit the champion, who delivered a colt March 21 at nearby Hill 'n' Dale Farms.

"When I have a free moment, the first thing I am going to do is see Lady Eli and her foal," she said. "It will be exciting to see her as a mom. Last April, I went to see her, and she knew I was the lady with the treats. She is very sweet around me as long as I come bearing gifts." BH

MIND CONTROL OPTS FOR BAY SHORE OVER KENTUCKY DERBY BIDBy Bob Ehalt

After the grade 1-winning Mind Control finished second in the

Gotham Stakes (G3), the best guess was that the 3-year-old's connec-tions would use the one-turn mile as a steppingstone to New York's definitive Kentucky Derby Present-ed by Woodford Reserve (G1) prep, the 1 1/8-mile Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G2).

But, apparently, Kentucky Derby fever did not take hold.

Instead of chasing the bright lights of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby was ruled out and the Hopeful Stakes (G1) winner owned by the Brunetti family's Red Oak Stable and Sol Kumin's Madaket Stables was entered in the $250,000 Bay Shore Stakes (G3), a seven-furlong sprint April 6 at Aqueduct Racetrack on the Wood Memorial undercard.

"It wasn't my decision," trainer Greg Sacco said. "It was made by my brother, Rick, the racing manager, and Steve Brunetti (of Red Oak). They felt at this stage in his development that this was the best path for Mind Control, knowing he's strong at seventh-eighths or a mile by the way he has performed."

Although the connections of the 11 starters in the Wood would have loved to see Mind Control in the field—his presence would have triggered a $250,000 purse bonus—Sacco agreed with the move to continue sprinting.

"I don't disagree. I see their point," he said. "They want to race him at 4, and a lot of horses get churned up during the Triple Crown. They thought it would be beneficial to get by the Bay Shore test, which will not be easy, and then we would point for the (seven-

furlong) Woody Stephens (G1, June 8 at Belmont Park) to try to win a grade 1 at 2 and 3 and then stretch him out after that in a race like the Haskell (G1, July 20 at Monmouth Park)."

The trainer added that should the Kentucky-bred turn in a powerful effort in the Bay Shore, there could be a change of plans with the Preakness Stakes (G1) becoming an option.

"You never know. I certainly believe he belongs among the elite in the 3-year-old class," he said. "If he had a big run in the Bay Shore, I think they would at least consider the Preakness."

Sacco's confidence in Mind Control has been stoked by the way he has bounced back after a grueling runner-up effort in the Gotham. The son of Stay Thirsty bred by Red Oak moved from sixth to engage Much Better and Instagrand for the lead in midstretch, but after running into a six-furlong fraction of 1:09.23, none of them was able to resist the final late charge of Wood starter Haikal, who blew past them in the final strides and won by a length.

BLOODHORSE DAILY PAGE 22 OF 38SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2019

"He's doing super. He could not have come out of the Gotham any better," Sacco said about a colt who opened 2019 with a win in the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct Jan 1 and had 30 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby. "It was a hard-fought race with fast fractions, and he kept his weight afterwards and everything is on cue. His first work after the race was faster than I wanted (four furlongs in :47 3/5 March 23), but he did it effortlessly. He's going into the Bay Shore better than the Gotham."

Though Mind Control will face only four 3-year-olds in the Bay Shore, it will be anything but an easy test for him. Much Better, who is trained by Bob Baffert, remained in New York after finishing fourth in the Gotham under Mike Smith—a half-length and a nose behind Mind Control—and returns in the Bay Shore.

"I want to cut back a little bit because I really think he has a lot of potential," Baffert said. "He has natural speed, and he went way too fast (in the Gotham). It was a ridiculous pace, and he didn't get beat very far. He could have easily won that race. So I think shortening him up a little bit, he can maybe relax."

Three Chimneys Farm's Much Better will be ridden by Victor Espinoza, who teamed with Baffert to win the 2015 Triple Crown with Zayat Stables' American Pharoah.

Adding to the quality of the small field is Swale Stakes (G3) winner Call Paul and Mucho, who was second in the Hopeful and won a March 1 allowance race at Gulfstream Park in his 3-year-old debut.

Grade 1 winner Discreet Lover returns in Excelsior

The $150,000 Excelsior Stakes (G3) figures to attract some attention among the five graded stakes on the 11-race card, largely because of Discreet Lover, the 2018 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) winner who will be making his 2019 debut for owner/trainer Uriah St. Lewis.

"He's coming back real strong and has been galloping good," said St. Lewis, whose 6-year-old horse won the Excelsior last year but has not raced since finishing eighth in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) Nov. 3. "I think he'll be at his best. I think this will be his best year."

Also entered in the field of eight is Monongahela, who was second—a neck behind Bonus Points—in the John B. Campbell Stakes at Laurel Park Feb. 16.

The Aqueduct stakes can be seen on MSG and Fox Sports 2 during shows that run from 3-5:30 p.m. ET (MSG) and 4-5:30 p.m. (FS2). The MSG program will feature the Bay Shore, Excelsior, Gazelle Stakes (G2), and Carter Handicap (G1). FS2 will carry the Excelsior, Gazelle, and Carter. BH

DREAM TREE AIMS TO BOUNCE BACK IN LAS FLORESBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

After suffering the first loss of her career in the La Brea Stakes (G1), grade 1 winner

Dream Tree will look to return to form April 7 in the $100,000 Las Flores Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park.

Phoenix Thoroughbreds' Uncle Mo filly enters Sunday's six-furlong race for fillies and mares off an eighth-place finish in the Dec. 26 La Brea at Santa Anita, where she gave way after leading early as the 3-5 favorite in that seven-furlong test. The Las Flores will mark the 4-year-old debut for Dream Tree, who won her first six starts.

Dream Tree capped her perfect three-start juvenile season with a Starlet Stakes (G1) win at Los Alamitos. Last year, she won the Las Virgenes Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita and the Prioress Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course for trainer Bob Baffert before her La Brea loss.

Baffert will also send out Godolphin's Emboldened, a 4-year-old daughter of Elusive Quality also making her first start since the La Brea, where she secured her first grade 1 placing when finishing third.

Emboldened has finished first or third in each of her four career starts.

The expected field of 10 includes last year's Santa Anita Oaks (G1) runner-up Spectator, who will make her first start since an off-the-board finish in the Aug. 4 Longines Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. A daughter of Jimmy Creed trained by Phil D'Amato, Rick and Sharon Waller and Little Red Feather Racing's Spectator won the Sorrento Stakes (G2) at Del Mar as a juvenile. BH

TIGER ROLL BIDS FOR SECOND GRAND NATIONAL TITLEBy Tony O'Hehir/Racing Post

It has been mission impossible for more than four decades, but the long wait to find a successor to Red

Rum could end when Tiger Roll bids to become the first horse since the Aintree legend to win more than one Grand National.

Like the marvelous Rummy, Tiger Roll is small in stature but huge in heart, as he showed when hanging on from Pleasant Company to land the 2018 Grand National.

He went into that race a three-time Cheltenham Festival hero. Now he is a four-time festival hero having destroyed the opposition in last month's Cross Country.

It means Gigginstown House Stud's star returns to Liverpool as a much improved horse and potentially the hottest favorite for many a year.

For once-a-year punters wondering why we are faced with an unusually short-priced favorite, in a nutshell it is because he has looked simply superb in his two runs this year, winning over hurdles at Navan at 25-1 before justifying hot favoritism at Cheltenham.

Tiger Roll is potentially part of history in another way too, for he is just one of 11 runners for trainer Gordon Elliott—there would have been 13 had Don Poli and Outlander not been sold on Thursday night—whose mentor Martin Pipe holds the record for runners in a National with 10 in 2001. Supporting Tiger Roll in Elliott's football team's worth of runners are a host of interesting candidates, including last year's Irish Grand National hero General Principle and Jury Duty, winner of the American Grand National Hurdle last year.

Elliott, who first sprang to fame when Silver Birch took the 2007 National, said: "Tiger Roll has been the horse of a lifetime. He's in great form, and his form this year suggest he's better than ever.

"But it will be tough as he's higher in the weights this year, and we could have done without the rain as he doesn't want it too testing."

Spare a Thought for DonoghueKeith Donoghue, who has partnered Tiger Roll in

all three starts this season, misses out on riding in the

National. He would have ridden Tiger Roll last year had he been able to do the weight—he finished eighth on Valseur Lido instead—but while last year's winning jockey Davy Russell was always going to retain the mount on Tiger Roll at Aintree, Donoghue had been due to ride Outlander, only for the horse to be sold on Thursday night, with new connections calling up James Bowen.

Spotlight VerdictHaving held off Pleasant Company for Aintree glory in

2018, Tiger Roll has come roaring back this season and took the latest of his many Cheltenham Festival honors with such ease that he brings improved form to this year's National. The chief negative about him has been the odds in a 40-runner contest.

One opponent who could relish his first crack at the race is the Scottish National winner Joe Farrell, who returned to action recently and has shaped very promisingly, as has Rathvinden, who's another to have registered an important win last term. Vintage Clouds and Lake View Lad shaped well with their strong finishes at Cheltenham, while Step Back should be primed for a bold show. Although Tiger Roll heads the Elliott/Gigginstown horde, Dounikos and General Principle could provide them with further powerful ammunition. All will have something to fear if Minella Rocco is still in contention after the first circuit.

SHORT PRICE EXPECTED ON TIGER ROLL IN GRAND NATIONALBy Mark Storey/Racing Post

Bookmakers predict Tiger Roll will go off the short-est-priced Grand National favorite since Red Rum

was backed into 7-2 to record a hat trick of wins in 1975.The layers believe he could be even shorter than that

when the tape goes up for the start of the National, part of an estimated £250 million staked on the race in Britain, according to Ladbrokes.

Available at 12-1 after winning the Boyne Hurdle in February, then 6-1 following his success in the cross-country chase at Cheltenham, Tiger Roll was a top-priced 9-2 and as short as 7-2 April 1.

Coming just a week after Auxerre landed the first leg of the spring double, the Lincoln Handicap, at Doncaster as a strongly backed 5-2 favorite, victory for Tiger Roll would be a hammer blow to bookmakers.

David Stevens of Coral said Friday: "An estimated third of the adult population enjoy a flutter on the big race, and this year one horse, Tiger Roll, will feature on millions of betting slips.

"Tiger Roll was a popular winner 12 months ago, but that victory will be nothing compared to the reaction if he emulates the mighty Red Rum and becomes the first dual winner of the race for 45 years.

"One year later, Rummie was sent off 7-2 favorite when failing to complete a hat trick, and Tiger Roll is already around those odds, and that's before millions of bets are placed on him tomorrow.

"There will only ever be one Red Rum, who did complete a third win in the National in 1977, but Tiger Roll will be the most popular runner since those days, and it's even possible he could become the shortest-priced winning favorite since Poethlyn at 11-4 100 years ago."

Golden Miller was the National's hottest favorite when unseating at 2-1 in 1935, the year after he won, and although Tiger Roll is not expected to go off that short, Ladbrokes predicts a "nightmare payout" if he wins.

Head of PR Nicola McGeady said Friday: "He's the public horse who's continued to line the pockets

of punters, and the odds suggest tomorrow will be no different.

"It's the day the nation goes to the bookies, with many punters picking a horse because they like the name or the color. This year Joe Farrell, Rathvinden, and Tea For Two are the horses capturing attention besides the favorite."

Betfred spokesman Matt Hulmes added: "Tiger Roll is already a substantial loser after the favorite won the Lincoln last weekend, the first leg of the spring double.

"Throw in those punters who celebrated his win 12 months ago—they'll be piling in again—plus those who fancy a part of history being made, and I estimate one in every six bets will be for the favorite.

"If he defies 45 years of history and emulates Red Rum, it will be a great day for the sport but an absolute unparalleled shocker for the layers!"

Thirty broadcasters around the world will show the race live, including in Russia and China.

Dickon White, regional director for Jockey Club Racecourses' North West Region said: "The enduring global appeal of the Randox Health Grand National is reflected by the high level of interest from TV broadcasters worldwide. One of sport's great spectacles will receive the global exposure it merits."

MODERN DAY GRAND NATIONAL A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHALLENGEBy David Baxter/Racing Post

Should Tiger Roll justify favoritism and win the April 6 Randox Health Grand National he would be

the first back-to-back winner since the legendary Red Rum, trained by the late Ginger McCain.

The most famous horse in the history of the race won in 1973 and 1974 before claiming it for a third time in 1977. Red Rum's feat has stood the test of time, but following a dominant performance in the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, punters and bookmakers feel Tiger Roll has an outstanding chance of matching the achievement.

McCain's son Donald himself triumphed with Ballabriggs in 2011, and while he rates Tiger Roll's chances of succeeding again highly, he does not think the achievements can be compared directly.

"I think Tiger Roll has a great chance of winning another National, and Gordon (Elliott) is making a

fantastic job of him," McCain said."But in regards of emulating Red Rum, and I know

I'm a little bit biased, that ship has sailed."In the 40-plus years since Red Rum won his three

Grand Nationals, the race has undergone significant changes, including making the course and fences safer, along with how the race is formed from a handicapping perspective with the compressed weights.

Such alterations, McCain believes, make the Aintree marathon a much different test in the modern era, and he added: "You didn't get nine pounds for winning a Grand National in those days, you went from 10 stone, five pounds to 12 stone and carried top weight every year afterwards.

"You were giving two stone to horses and weight to Gold Cup winners. The race has changed completely and I find it a little mind-boggling every year that a Grand National winner can go up seven pounds or nine pounds, and I've had one of those as well.

"It doesn't seem like the Aintree factor comes into winners somehow. The modern day Grand National is

a good quality staying handicap chase. The other factors have been taken out of it a bit."

McCain does think Tiger Roll has a lot in his favor ahead of his National defense and said: "He's been trained for the day, and I imagine the Cross Country will have put him spot on. If anybody can get the job done, Gordon can.

"If Tiger Roll can go and win a second Grand National, it would be a feat that's not been done for many years, and it might be a long time before it is done again in the modern era. But the race and the conditions have changed beyond recognition compared to (Red Rum's) days."

DANON FANTASY HEADS JAPANESE ONE THOUSAND GUINEASBy Bob Kieckhefer

Japan's reigning juvenile filly champion Danon Fan-tasy leads a promising field of 18 set for the April

7 Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas, G1) at Hanshin Racecourse—a race won in 2018 by Almond Eye.

The 1,600-meter (about one-mile) test—Japan's first classic of the year—points the way to the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1) at 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) at Tokyo Racecourse May 19.

Danon Fantasy puts her 4-for-5 record on the line in the Oka Sho. The Deep Impact filly got the year off to a good start with a victory in the Tulip Sho (G2) over the course and distance. As a 2-year-old, she worked quickly up the class ladder toward a year-ending win in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (G1).

"In the Tulip Sho, she got into a good early position and was able to settle well," assistant trainer Teruhiko Saruhashi said before the Oka Sho barrier draw. "She had to be switched to the outside on the run for home but accelerated well to go on and win. It was a good result to go into the big race next."

Danon Fantasy drew gate 15. Jockey Yuga Kawada said the filly "is able to be patient during a race, and this is one of the keys with her. She's certainly developed well so far, her balance is good, and it's a strong horse like her that can win the Oka Sho."

Gran Alegria, another by the ubiquitous Deep Impact, won her first two starts as a 2-year-old, then finished third

against colts in the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (G1) at Hanshin, also at 1,600 meters.

"She's shown speed since her debut," said Gran Alegria's trainer, Kazuo Fujisawa. "It was a tough race last time against the colts. She's had a winter break and has come back refreshed. Compared to last autumn, she's a lot more relaxed, as we've seen in her recent work."

Christophe Lemaire will partner Gran Alegria in the Oka Sho.

Chrono Genesis, a daughter of Bago, was second to Danon Fantasy in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies and started her 2019 campaign with a win in the Daily Hai Queen Cup (G3) over 1,600 meters at Tokyo in February.

Besides Almond Eye, who was only second-favorite behind Lucky Lilac in the 2018 Oka Sho, the race has helped launch the careers of fillies Buena Vista and Gentildonna. The Oka Sho, the initial leg of the Filly Triple Crown, is run right-handed around one sweeping turn over the Hanshin turf. BH
