SOMETHING AWESOME STRETCHES TO CHARLES TOWN CLASSIC WINBy Claire Crosbyt @BH_CNovak

Stronach Stables' homebred Something Awesome came to

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races on a roll, Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado arrived on a mission, and the two brought home the money April 21 in the $1.2 million Charles Town Classic Stakes (G2).

Primarily a sprinter through most of his career, the 7-year-old Awesome Again gelding found a new dimension in March, when he was asked to go nine furlongs for the first time in the Harrison E. Johnson Memorial Stakes at Laurel Park. Although he'd never won going more than seven furlongs, a 2 1/4-length score in the Harrison Johnson solidified his connections' decision to aim for the Charles Town jackpot. The win was his fourth from his past five outings.

"I knew by pedigree he could get the distance," trainer Jose Corrales said.

Something Awesome is out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Dance Floor mare Somethinaboutlaura, a California-bred whose exploits ranged from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. Awesome Again is the sire of several classic-distance performers, including three-time Charles Town Classic runner Game On Dude, who won the 2013 edition and ran

second in 2011 and 2014."It's been pretty much just

go with the flow, and not much has changed," Corrales said of stretching the gelding out. "He's a very athletic horse, so I think he can handle just about any kind of track."

Prado piloted Something Awesome to victory in the Feb. 17 General George Stakes (G3) going seven furlongs for the gelding's first graded win, and he was

aboard for the stretch-out in the Harrison Johnson. They made it three-for-three together when he set the bay runner down Saturday for a closing drive.

"It was beautiful. He sat right behind the speed," Prado said. "He was kind of anxious at the beginning. He wanted to go after the leaders early, so I kind of took my time and tucked right behind horses, and I waited a little bit longer."

The pace was set by 2017 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) winner Diversify, who was sent off as the 6-5 choice in a seven-horse field for his season debut. Given the green light by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. out of the gate, Diversify took command and put up opening fractions of :24.34 and :48.48 while stalked by Afleet Willy. Prado kept Something Awesome ready to rumble in sixth as Afleet Willy took over through three-quarters in 1:13.16 and shifted his mount out for a three-wide move around the final turn.

"Right around the three-sixteenths pole, he gave me a good feeling," Prado said. "He was moving forward … and, luckily, we got the job done."

War Story also mounted a bid between horses under Javier Castellano and hooked up with Something Awesome for an exciting stretch run, even heading the eventual winner briefly in their battle to the line. But Something Awesome lunged back just in time to edge War Story by a neck. It was a length back to Fear the Cowboy, who rallied for third. Afleet Willy, You're to Blame, Discreet Lover, and Diversify completed the order of finish behind a final time of 1:50.84.

Something Awesome returned $20.60, $6, and $5.80 at odds of 9-1. He improved his career earnings to $1,082,051, with a 9-2-6 record from 24 starts. He has won three of four starts this year, along with a third.

Prado, 50, is closing in on a major career milestone with 6,992 wins. Only seven North American riders

have won more races, and they are all retired."I'm very excited, very happy, and very thankful

for the opportunity," Prado said. "I can't thank Mr. Corrales, the Stronach Group, all the connections enough. It's been a thrill. I'm very blessed to have this great opportunity this late in my career."

Also on the Saturday card at Charles Town, Al and Michelle Crawford Racing's Delta Bluesman romped by seven lengths in the 4 1/2-furlong Caixa Eletronica Stakes. It was the 8-year-old Wagon Limit gelding's 13th win from 56 starts. BH

GOOD MAGIC SMOOTH IN FOUR-FURLONG WORKBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Good horses can do wonders to relieve the stress of their human caretakers. So the fact trainer Chad

Brown was regaling visitors with stories about his late mentor, Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, just min-utes before champion Good Magic headed to the track at Keeneland April 21 said a mouthful about how the son of Curlin is progressing toward the most important race of his life.

As he stepped onto the bustling Lexington oval and went about his penultimate breeze for the May 5 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), Good Magic indicated there was no need for his conditioner to dial back his confidence.

With Brown watching from the box seats, Good Magic gave the two-time Eclipse Award winner reason to stay loose and happy. The chestnut colt cruised through a four-furlong work in :48 flat—his first serious move since he captured the April 7 Toyota Blue

Grass Stakes (G2) for Stonestreet Stables and e Five Racing Thoroughbreds.

Good Magic broke off for his solo move in comfortable order under exercise rider Walter Malasquez, went through the half-mile with barely a nudge from his pilot, and galloped out to six furlongs in 1:14.

"The horse worked excellent," Brown said. "He was very comfortable to my eye. I'm just thrilled with the way the horse is moving. He was well within himself."

After starting his sophomore campaign with a third-place finish in the March 3 Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), the bandwagon that formed after Good Magic captured the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) seemed poised to lose some members, especially with budding standouts such as Justify and Audible gaining steam among Derby prognosticators.

His 1 1/2-length victory over Flameaway in the Blue Grass Stakes silenced some of that, as well as the notion his Breeders' Cup triumph was the product of one good day of circumstances coming together. Just as his Juvenile win was his third outing of his 2-year-old season, the Kentucky Derby will be Good Magic's third start this year.

"I've seen the same development and … that was the plan," Brown said. "We rested him a bit after his 2-year-old year and brought him back trying to build toward his third race of the year being his best one. As a 2-year-old, his third race in his form cycle was his best one, and he (is) really thriving here at Keeneland.

"Looking back now, (the Fountain of Youth) was an important building block to get here today. It's all been a progression."

Brown added Good Magic will ship to Churchill Downs April 22 to have his final pre-Derby breeze beneath the Twin Spires.

"I want to give him a nice, full week of training over there—get used to the track," Brown said.

Also on the Keeneland worktab Saturday was Greg Hall and SAYJAY Racing's Blended Citizen, on the outside looking in toward a spot in the Derby field. The son of Proud Citizen worked five furlongs in company in :59 2/5 with Hall of Famer Gary Stevens aboard for trainer Doug O'Neill.

Blended Citizen started a couple lengths back of workmate Shane

Zain, drew even in the stretch, and inched ahead at the wire before galloping out to six furlongs in 1:11 2/5. Fifth behind Good Magic in the Blue Grass, Blended Citizen is 24th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard for a field limited to the top 20 point earners that pass the entry box May 1.

"He will work again here Saturday," Sisterson said of Blended Citizen. Kyle Frey will have the mount in the Derby should Blended Citizen get in.

Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) contender Eskimo Kisses, runner-

up in the April 7 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1), breezed five furlongs in 1:01 4/5 Saturday at Keeneland. Corey Lanerie, who rode Eskimo Kisses in the Ashland Stakes, was aboard for the work. They went in company with Fern Circle Stables' Classy Music, third in a Keeneland optional-claiming allowance April 6. McPeek said Eskimo Kisses will breeze again at Keeneland April 28 before shipping to Churchill Downs. BH

BAFFERT WORKS JUSTIFY, RAYYA FOR DERBY AND OAKSBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

A pair of classy chestnuts trained by Bob Baffert put in impor-

tant workouts at Santa Anita Park April 21 to prepare for their up-coming trip to Churchill Downs.

Minutes apart, Justify, the likely favorite for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), and Rayya, the filly from Dubai who will run in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), worked six furlongs during the 6:30 a.m. training session at Santa Anita—but the drills were quite different.

Justify came out first, broke off a bit in front of his workmate, and dropped back into a stalking position in the backstretch under jockey Drayden Van Dyke. As the two workers turned for home, Justify was on his stablemate's hip and cruised by in the stretch to hit the wire about two lengths in front. The Scat Daddy colt owned by China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, Starlight Racing, and WinStar Farm continued to work an eighth past the wire and was clocked in 1:13 flat for six furlongs.

"He did his thing," Baffert said. "He's a superior racehorse. He does things easy."

While Justify stalked and pounced during his work, Rayya was out in front immediately, and her competition was pretty tough. With a quick break out of the gate in the backstretch chute at Santa Anita under Van Dyke, the Tiz Wonderful filly immediately put

two lengths on her workmate, 2017 Kentucky Oaks winner and last year's 3-year-old champion filly Abel Tasman. Rayya was up by about three lengths in the backstretch, but Abel Tasman, with jockey Martin Garcia aboard, caught up in the turn, and the pair finished about even at the wire for a clocking of 1:12 4/5 for six furlongs. Rayya set fractions of :35 4/5, :47 4/5, and 1:00 1/5.

"Abel doesn't have really good gate speed, and I'm trying to get her a little quicker, but Rayya is serious," Baffert said. "She worked with a champion, and she held her own. And she needed it. She needed a stiff work like that because I haven't done much with her since I got her here. I'm just getting her used to everything because we're asking her to do something that's never been done before."

Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi's Rayya, who won

the UAE Oaks Sponsored By Al Naboodah Construction Group (G3) at Meydan March 1 before a runner-up effort to the tour de force of Mendelssohn in the March 31 UAE Derby Sponsored By Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group (G2) for trainer Doug Watson, was transferred to Baffert this month to train toward the Kentucky Oaks.

"I've only had her for a couple weeks," Baffert said. "She's class—a really nice filly."

Also on the work tab at Santa Anita Saturday was OXO Equine's Instilled Regard, who will need two defections from the Kentucky Derby leaderboard to make the 20-horse field. The Lecomte Stakes (G3) winner, who finished fourth in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) behind winner Justify last time out, covered five furlongs in 1:01 flat for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. BH

FLAMEAWAY, MONOMOY GIRL WORK AT CHURCHILL DOWNSBy Gregory A. Hall

The first day of the special training time at Churchill Downs—reserved for entrants in the Louisville ov-

al's two biggest races—was busy April 21, with several 3-year-olds turning in their penultimate workouts for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) or Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1).

John C. Oxley's Flameaway, the runner-up in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2), worked five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 outside of Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) runner Ride a Comet, who recorded the same time. Splits included :11 4/5 for the eighth, :23 2/5 for the quarter, and :35 1/5 for the three-eighths.

As impressive as anything to Nicholas Tomlinson, trainer Mark Casse's Churchill assistant, was the gallop out to six furlongs in 1:14 2/5. That's because Flameaway has been known for just doing what he

needed as opposed to being flashy.Saturday's Churchill work "was the best that he's

ever galloped out. And for him, that's pretty rare," Tomlinson said. "So we think that he's coming into the Derby right now in great form, and he's doing really well, and we think that the first Saturday in May he's going to be on his game."

Tomlinson said Flameaway will have a final maintenance work most likely April 28 or possibly the day before.

"He's doing really well right now, and we can't be happier," he said.

Trainer Dale Romans' Derby duo of Promises Fulfilled and Free Drop Billy also worked five furlongs.

Robert J. Baron's Promises Fulfilled, the winner of the Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), finished in :59 1/5, with splits including :11 3/5 and :23 for the quarter mile. The six-furlong gallop out was clocked in 1:11 4/5.

Romans said Albaugh Family Stables' Free Drop Billy jogged a mile and galloped a mile before his five-furlong work, which was :59 flat. The splits for the Blue Grass third-place finisher were :12 1/5, :23 3/5, :35 flat, and :46 4/5 for the half. He galloped out to six furlongs in 1:12 and seven furlongs in 1:25 2/5. Romans said the colt "looked like he didn't get tired at all."

Romans said both Derby horses and his Kentucky Oaks contender Coach Rocks, who also went five furlongs, all "worked super."

Coach Rocks, the winner of the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), worked in :59 flat, with split times of :11 3/5, :22 4/5, :34 4/5, and :46 3/5. She galloped out to six furlongs in 1:11 4/5 and seven furlongs in 1:25 2/5.

"She was just skipping over the racetrack," Romans said. "She looked really good. When she came back, she wasn't tired. Starting to get excited."

Coach Rocks is owned by Roddy J. Valente, Rick Pitino's RAP Racing, and West Point Thoroughbreds.

Romans said he's encouraging Pitino, the fired University of Louisville basketball coach, to come to the Oaks despite the coach saying he won't because of bad feelings toward a couple people at U of L.

"I've begged him to come," Romans said. "He wants me to make sure he lets the people in Kentucky know how much he loves Kentucky and the people of Kentucky. There's just a couple of people he has issues with."

As for the begging, Romans said, "I told him two days ago, I said, 'I wish you'd come to town and take the pressure off of me. I get to talk about you more than I do the horses.'"

Romans said Coach Rocks will work April 27, followed by his Derby contenders April 28.

Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Monomoy Girl worked four furlongs in :47 2/5, with splits including :12 2/5, :24 1/5, and :36 flat. She galloped out to five furlongs in :59 4/5. She was outside of allowance winner Compass Zone, who worked in :47 2/5 as well.

"She gives you a good feeling after you watch her breeze," trainer Brad Cox said. "So she lets you know she's ready to run."

Monomoy Girl, who will be one of the top betting choices in the Oaks, likely will work next in a week, Cox said.

"She's got to, obviously, take another step forward, and we think it's definitely possible, especially the way she's training here at Churchill," he said.

Possible Oaks entrant Kelly's Humor, who would be in the second position on the also-eligible list, worked four furlongs for Cox in :48 3/5, with splits including :12 3/5 and :24 2/5. She galloped out to five furlongs in 1:01 3/5. If she doesn't make the Oaks, Kelly's Humor will run in the Eight Belles Stakes Presented by Kentucky Trailer (G2), Cox said.

Cox's Sassy Sienna, winner of the Fantasy Stakes (G3), also galloped in advance of her Oaks start.

Sunland Park Oaks winner Blamed also worked five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 at Churchill for trainer Joel Marr. Splits included :13 flat, :25 2/5, and :37 1/5. She galloped out to six furlongs in 1:14 2/5. BH

OBS SPRING 2-YEAR-OLDS IN TRAINING SALE

MINESHAFT, HE'S HAD ENOUGH COLTS TOP FINAL OBS WORKSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Highlighted by two colts that breezed the co-fastest quar-

ter-mile time of :20 3/5, the six-day under tack show workouts in preparation for the Ocala Breeders' Sales spring 2-year-olds in training sale came to an end April 21.

With the exception of two days marked by 10-15 mph headwinds with even stronger gusts, conditions were ideal this week as the horses cataloged for the April 24-27 sale in Ocala, Fla., showed their potential over the sales company's all-weather Safetrack surface.

"I thought it was an extremely good breeze show," said OBS sales director Tod Wojciechowski, adding that the professional horse men and women watching the under tack shows would take into consideration the effects of the wind on some workers. "There were a couple of days where headwinds put a couple of kinks in it. But we deal with a pretty sophisticated bunch of horse people. The biggest takeaway is that we should all step back (and) realize that the time on the (workout) sheet is not everything, but take a look at how the horse did it."

During Saturday's final session, colts by Mineshaft (Hip

1149) and He's Had Enough (Hip 1158)—both offered by Envision Equine, agent—shared the fastest quarter-mile work time, joining Hip 367, a colt by Alpha, and Hip 936, a Shakin It Up colt, as co-bullet workers over the course of six days.

The Mineshaft colt is out of the Indian Charlie mare Two Trail Sioux, an earner of $664,960 who won half of 12 starts, including the Fleur de Lis Handicap (G2). The colt was bred in Kentucky by Jason Litt, Litt Family Horse Trust, and Alex Solis II. The dam of stakes-placed Cheyenne Pass, Two Trail Sioux was purchased by the Litt Family Trust for $30,000 while carrying the Mineshaft colt in utero from the Lane's

End consignment to the 2016 Keeneland January mixed sale.

Bred in Florida by Courtney Lee Meagher, the He's Had Enough colt was produced from the winning mare Up for Grabs. His third dam, Love From Mom, produced five stakes winners, including Love That Jazz, the dam of three-time grade 1 winner Society Selection.

The fastest eighth-mile time of :09 4/5 was shared by 19 horses cataloged for the sale, including 11 that breezed Saturday.

With 1,222 head cataloged, the OBS sale will be held Tuesday through Friday, with sessions beginning daily at 10:30 a.m. EDT. BH

DIAMOND KING PUNCHES TICKET TO PREAKNESS WITH TESIO WINBy BloodHorse Staff

With a strong surge in the final furlong of the $125,000 Federico Tesio Stakes April 21 at

Laurel Park, Cash is King, D. J. Stable, and LC Racing's Diamond King secured a place in the second leg of the Triple Crown.

For the third year in a row, the Federico Tesio for 3-year-olds offered a "Win and You're In" opportunity for Triple Crown-nominated sophomores to punch an early ticket to the May 19 Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course.

"That's the plan. That's why we aimed for this (race)," Cash is King managing partner Chuck Zacney said after Diamond King's three-quarter-length win with jockey Frankie Pennington aboard. "We never lost faith in this horse."

Off a third-place finish in the seven-furlong Swale Stakes (G3) Feb. 3 at Gulfstream Park, the son of Quality Road broke second from post 5 in a field of nine and held close behind early leader Noble Commander. Florida-bred Noble Commander set fractions of :23.93, :48.33, and 1:13.27 through the first six furlongs.

As the top pair rounded for home, Diamond King dug in to move away for a clear lead with a sixteenth remaining. Godolphin's Holland Park sped past the tiring Noble Commander on the outside in a last-ditch effort but could not get past Diamond King.

"He did it very nicely," Pennington said. "He settled in nice going the mile and an eighth, which was fantastic. When it was time to go, I asked him and he gave it to me."

Diamond King, who will seek his first graded victory in the Preakness, finished in 1:50.31. Lincoln Stable's American Lincoln came in fourth, 3 1/4 lengths behind third-place finisher Noble Commander.

"I'm tickled to death," said winning trainer John Servis. "It was very impressive."

Bred in Kentucky by JSM Equine out of the Malibu Moon mare Akron Moon, Diamond King was purchased for $235,000 by Zacney from Wavertree Stables' consignment to the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale by Zacney. BH

ONE GO ALL GO COMES THROUGH IN ELKHORN STAKESBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

In the aftermath of the $250,000 Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland on April 21, both ends of

the spectrum of Thoroughbred racing walked through the track's tunnel grateful for everything their runners had given.

On the high end was the ever-affable Charles "Scooter" Dickey, the man who helped multiple grade 1 winner Flat Out overcome his physical issues to become a top-level performer beginning in 2011. For just the fourth time, Dickey celebrated a graded stakes win when the hard-knocking One Go All Go went gate-to-wire in the 1 1/2-mile turf test Saturday.

If Dickey's achievement represented a deserved accolade for a respected horseman, the inconsolable face of fellow trainer Tim Glyshaw told the story of why the race's revelry was muted.

While One Go All Go ended a 12-race losing skid when he held off Oscar Nominated by three-quarters of a length, the race was marred when grade 1 winner and barn favorite Bullards Alley suffered a fatal injury.

Bullards Alley—pulled up by jockey Corey Lanerie around the first of three turns—was later euthanized, according to Keeneland officials, due to a lateral condyle fracture to his left hind leg. The 6-year-old Flower Alley gelding was an endearing member of Glyshaw's shedrow, having provided the trainer with his first grade 1 win when he captured the Oct. 15 Pattison Canadian International Stakes (G1T) by 10 3/4 lengths at Woodbine.

"Bullard meant the world to us. He was a cool horse that always gave his all," Glyshaw said in a statement posted on his Twitter account. "He was our first horse to win graded races for us, and a grade 1. No words can describe how I and my barn feel right now. RIP BULLARD."

Owned by Wayne Spalding and Faron McCubbins, Bullards Alley won six of 40 career starts and was closing in on the million-dollar mark with $928,622 in earnings.

The loss of Bullards Alley was juxtaposed against a long-awaited breakout victory for fellow 6-year-old One Go All Go.

After capturing the 2015 Commonwealth Derby (G2T) for previous owners Preston Stables and Prestonwood Racing, One Go All Go prevailed in just one of his next 17 starts, but he had been knocking on the door against good stakes company.

In August, the bay son of Fairbanks finished third to the Dickey-trained graded stakes winner Flatlined in the Cliff Guilliams Handicap. Though he bested

him that day, Dickey was impressed enough that he urged owner Rodney Paden to purchase One Go All Go for $62,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency's consignment to the 2017 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

"I had Flatlined, and he had beaten this horse by three-quarters of a length at Ellis Park," Dickey recalled. "And I told Mr. Paden he's good enough to buy him if he doesn't bring too much. And we stole him, as it turned out."

After joining Dickey's barn, One Go All Go rattled off four runner-up efforts in six outings, including second-place runs in the March 31 Pan American Stakes (G2T) and March 3 Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2T) at Gulfstream Park.

Sent off at 9-1 odds in the 11-horse Elkhorn field, One Go All Go got the advantage around the first turn under handling from Chris Landeros and was able to get into his rhythm while cutting fractions of :26.32, :51.60, and 1:17.17 as 2-1 favorite and defending race winner Itsinthepost tracked him in second.

The top two remained in place coming into the final bend but were joined by Oscar Nominated ranging up three wide. The determined efforts of Oscar Nominated and Itsinthepost couldn't catch the pacesetter, however, as One Go All Go hit the wire in 2:30.76 over

a course rated firm."Every time they came to him, Chris

(Landeros) just let him out a little bit," Dickey said. "They just never could get him. He's been knocking on the door, been second and second and second. He finally got them today."

Oscar Nominated got up for second by a nose over Itsinthepost, with Call Provision settling for fourth. Danish Dynaformer rounded out the top five.

Bred in Virginia by Albert P. Coppola out of the Marquetry mare See Ashleigh Run, One Go All Go has won four of 24 starts with $643,538 in earnings.

"He's trains good all the time, ever since I've gotten him," Dickey said. "He's done us well." BH

BOBBY ABU DHABI MAKES THE GRADE IN KONA GOLDBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen's Bobby Abu Dhabi backed up his gritty runner-up effort in the

Triple Bend Stakes (G1) with his first graded score in the $200,000 Kona Gold Stakes (G2) April 21 at Santa Anita Park.

After breaking best from post 2 in the field of five under jockey Victor Espinoza, Bobby Abu Dhabi dueled briefly with Peter Miller-trained stablemate Calculator early in the 6 1/2-furlong test, dropped back to second entering the turn, then shot through to the front on the rail as Calculator began to tire.

In the clear on the front, Bobby Abu Dhabi opened up a 2 1/2-length lead with a furlong to run and held off a late closing effort from favored grade 1 winner and defending Kona Gold victor Ransom the Moon to win by 1 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:15.40.

"He ran great. For some reason, he's been a little sharper leaving the gate in his last two races," Espinoza said of the 4-year-old Macho Uno colt, who set a

rapid pace in the Triple Bend last time out and was only beaten 1 1/2 lengths by multiple grade 1 winner City of Light. "He came out of the gate running and ... (Miller's) other horse, Calculator, showed a lot of speed, so I eased off of him just a little bit. This horse is really focused right now, and he's moving forward."

Ransom the Moon, the 2017 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) winner, finished 4 1/4 lengths clear of Blameitonthelaw, who passed Calculator late for third. Calculator set fractions of :22.15 and :44.60 through a half-mile.

The race was marred by the fatal breakdown of Hal and Patti Earnhardt's homebred Ten Blessings, who was stalking the pace in fourth midway through the turn before he was pulled up by jockey Drayden Van Dyke. The 5-year-old son of Smart Strike, out of the two-time champion Indian Blessing, fractured both sesamoids in his left front leg and was euthanized after the race, according to the stewards at Santa Anita.

Bred in Kentucky by T/C Stable, Bobby Abu Dhabi pushed his earnings to $345,100 with his first stakes win. A $335,000 purchase by Rockingham Ranch from Grassroots Training & Sales' consignment to the 2016 Ocala Breeders' Sales spring sale of 2-year-olds

in training, Bobby Abu Dhabi now has four wins and two seconds from eight starts.

"He's a fast horse, and he doesn't need the lead, which is nice," Miller said. "I told Victor, 'If you break on top and make the lead, fine, but if someone else gets it, he can sit second or third.'

"Victor gave him a super ride. He saved all the ground and cut the corner, kicked away, and I think that was the difference." BH

WHAT A VIEW TAKES AMERICAN STAKES BY A NECKBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

The last few races for What a View hadn't been all that encouraging entering the $100,000 American

Stakes (G3T) April 21, but the grade 1 winner from two years ago flashed his talent again at Santa Anita Park.

As he is apt to do, the 7-year-old Vronsky gelding went to the front early in the one-mile American, set a moderate pace, and just held off a late closing drive from Colonist to secure his first graded victory since the 2016 Thunder Road Stakes (G3T).

"From everything he'd been showing me, I thought he'd run his race today," winning trainer Kenny Black said of What a View, who hadn't hit the board in three starts prior, albeit against tougher competition. "When you look at all of his good races—when he's able to go in :46 and change, (1:10) and change, he runs his best."

The pace was favorable Saturday under first-

time jockey Stewart Elliott (regular rider Tyler Baze was in Kentucky to ride Itsinthepost in the grade 2 Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes), and the pair cruised through fractions of :23.13, :46.42, and 1:10.08. What a View had a 1 1/2-length advantage at the quarter pole and maintained it for another furlong until Colonist made his late rush. What a View hit the wire in 1:33.80, a neck in front of his rival.

"He broke great, and he made an easy lead," Elliott said. "He was comfortable, and he took care of business. I thought (Sawyer's Hill) would show speed, (but) I didn't see him around. It worked out good."

Sawyer's Hill stalked the pace wide in third early on and tired harshly to finish last in the seven-horse field. Favored Blackjackcat—who also failed to place as the favorite in the Feb. 10 Thunder Road, his 2018 debut after three stakes wins in 2017—also stalked the pace in second but was passed in the stretch by Colonist and third-place finisher Kenjisstorm. Blackjackcat finished fourth, followed by Ritzy A.P., Mr. Roary, and Sawyer's Hill to complete the order

of finish.It was the third

graded stakes win for the California-bred owned by Finish Line Racing, The Elwood Johnston Trust, and Taste of Victory Stables, and pushed his earnings to $885,361. Bred by Old English Rancho, Patsy Berumen, and Sal Berumen, What a View now has a record of 8-5-0.

Black said What a View could make his next start in the May 28 Shoemaker Mile (G1T). BH

PINK LLOYD SETS TRACK RECORD IN JACQUES CARTIER REPEATBy BloodHorse Staff

Entourage Stable's newly minted Canadian Horse

of the Year Pink Lloyd turned in a show-stopping, track-record performance to win the $100,000 Jacques Cartier Stakes in his season debut April 21 at Woodbine.

Following an eight-for-eight stakes campaign in 2017 that earned him three Sovereign Awards, Pink Lloyd extended his win streak to nine in Saturday's six-furlong sprint for older horses and lowered the track record to 1:08.05. The former record of 1:08.16 was set by Essence Hit Man in 2011

Jockey Rafael Hernandez was aboard for one of his five wins on the 10-race opening day card, subbing in for Pink Lloyd's regular rider Eurico Rosa da Silva, who is serving a suspension.

"I've ridden against him, and every time he's beat me. He beat me eight times. I finally get on him, and I won the race," Hernandez said.

Leaving from the inside post for the first time in his career for Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Robert Tiller, Pink Lloyd raced inside Conquest Enforcer, who established a two-length lead through a quarter-mile in :21.96. After a half in :44.58, Pink Lloyd launched his attack and swept to victory by three-quarters of a length, with Extravagant Kid chasing him to the wire. Conquest Enforcer settled for third, with Majestic Slew, Tale of the Nile, and Ikerrin Road completing the order of finish.

"The main thing was to get him relaxed," Hernandez said of the 1-2 favorite. "We broke out of the gate real sharp, and I just wanted to take him back

and relax. As soon as he saw (Conquest Enforcer) in front of the pack, I was loaded all the way and just waited to let him go."

"I was certainly worried. I worry every time, but at the end of the day, that's nine stakes wins in a row. It's really amazing," Tiller said. "To winter here at (Paul) Buttigieg's farm and start on him in January—this horse, he's magic. He's a beautiful animal, and I don't think that's his best race you saw here today.

"I want to thank Rafael for the way he rode him here today. He got him off the fence when he had the opportunity. He had everything against him today—the weight, the (layoff), the new rider. I texted my son last night about all the things I was worried about, and he texted me back and said, 'Dad, he's a champion, and champions run.'"

Bred in Ontario by John Carey, the 6-year-old Old Forester—Gladiator Queen gelding has now won a dozen of his 14 starts and more than $700,000.

"He's an Ontario horse, an Ontario-sired horse, a Canadian-bred, and he deserves to run at Woodbine as long as there's races for him. And we're certainly not going to miss those opportunities," Tiller said. BH

JAMES GARFIELD TAKES GREENHAM STAKES AT NEWBURYBy Thoroughbred Publishing for BloodHorse

George Scott-trained James Garfield beat six colts and geldings April 21 to win the £60,000 Al Basti

Equiworld Supporting Greatwood Greenham Stakes (G3) at Newbury, finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of favorite Expert Eye, who nipped Hey Gaman in a photo for second. Raid was another three-quarters of a length back in fourth.

James Garfield—making his first start since finishing 10th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T)—made it two-for-two at Newbury, where he broke the six-furlong juvenile course record in the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes (G2) last year. Saturday, the son of Exceed And Excel was content to track the pace for much of the way under jockey Frankie Dettori before taking the lead inside the final furlong. Expert Eye, under Ryan Moore, was unable to go with the winner toward the finish but took second by a short head from pacesetter Hey Gaman.

The Greenham is one of the key trials for the QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (G1) at Newmarket, and British bookmakers have cut James Garfield's odds to as short as 16-1.

"Frankie is keen to go to the Guineas, and I don't see why not," Scott said. "He finished off really well and was tough again. It's his attitude that sets him apart; he just has this will to win. Credit to the team at home because he takes plenty of managing. It's a great story for all of us."

Dettori was also full of praise for his mount's attitude.

"He tries hard. He's all heart," Dettori said. "He's entitled to have a crack (at the May 5 Guineas). I'm not saying he's going to win it, but if it's an open Guineas, he's got a chance."

Owned by W J and T C O Gredley and bred by Stetchworth & Middle Park Studs, James Garfield had a final time of 1:26.98 for seven furlongs on a good to soft track.

Expert Eye, a group 2 winner who finished last of nine in the one-mile Darley Dewhurst Stakes (G1) at

Newmarket last year, impressed trainer Sir Michael Stoute in the son of Acclamation's season debut.

"Ryan said they went very slow," he said. "He's come a long way, because we've had difficulty with him in the stalls in the spring. He was pretty calm today and just needed a little shove in. He wants quicker ground, and we'll see how he comes through this. We're in no hurry to make a decision about which Guineas to go to. We'll take our time." BH
