A Note from the Director

I fell in love with Smokey Joe’s Café by the time the opening number “Neighborhood” finished playing . (I heard the show well before I saw it .) To me, the songs remind us of our shared experiences in life . Things like falling in love for the first time or being down in the dumps, or even regrets are universally relatable .

When Smokey Joe’s Café opened on Broadway on March 2, 1995, it was a celebration of Lieber and Stoller’s amazing music . It was also an homage to the artists that made that music so popular . From Elvis to the Coasters to LaVern Baker, the artists’ interpretation and personality made the songs stick in the hearts of people around the world .

While our production is also a celebration of this iconic music of the 50s and 60s, our production focuses on the connections that we have, not just with the music, but to other people .

Smokey Joe’s Café, or as I like to call it “SmoJoe’s”, is one of my absolute favorite shows of all time . This musical revue has no script other than the words of the songs themselves and as such it is so easy to sit back and enjoy this show .

I’d like to dedicate this show filled with love to my parents and my dearest friends, who are MY connections when I hear these songs .

I invited our cast to share their hearts with our audiences and embody the sounds and styles of their characters in their own unique way, as it related to their own lives and experiences .

My hope is that you hear connections in these songs that resonate with you and help you build, strengthen or even make new ones .

Welcome to our Neighborhood . —Jery Rosas, Director/Choreographer

valued volunteers .Earl Masuda (Assistant Producer) This is Earls 29th WVLO production . He’s been in the cast, crew or on the staff since 2010 . He produced the first show of the current season, 42nd Street, and his favorite role was being in the quartet in Breaking Up Is Hard to Do in 2010 . He thanks his wife, Pat, and sons, Matt and Chris, for putting up with his crazy schedule . Earl also thanks family and friends (at Oak Grove School District and Yu-Ai Kai)

for their continued support .Jery Rosas (Director/Choreographer) is supremely humbled to be given the opportunity to work on Smokey Joe’s Café, which has always been a personal favorite . His performing credits span nearly the entire Bay Area, from SF to Hollister . A few favorites: WVLO: Crazy For You (Bobby Child), Catch Me If You Can (Carl Hanratty), White Christmas (Phil Davies); SCP: Pippin (Leading Player), Jesus Christ Superstar (Judas); Limelight Actors’ Theatre:

Lend Me A Tenor (Max), Boeing Boeing (Robert) . Director credits: Jesus Christ Superstar (WVLO Musical Theater); Choreographer: Oliver, Sweet Charity, JCS (WVLO Musical Theater), Godspell (co-choreographer) . A great many thanks are not enough for the team that joined him on this journey or for the cast that worked and werked (not a typo) so hard to bring his wackadoo ideas to the stage, Jery owes them A LOT! He thanks to the Staff and incredible Cast for letting him play on the “other side of the table” and all the laughs along the way . Thank you to friends and family for putting up with the crazy schedule now that he is back in theatre again after a year off . Most importantly, thank YOU for supporting local theatre .

Rhona McFadyen (Assistant Choreographer) is back at WVLO after appearing as a Laker Girl in last summer’s Spamalot and as a Stewardess in Catch Me If You Can (2017) . A dancer all her life, Rhona has always enjoyed sharing her love of dance with children and teens . She currently works at Dartmouth Middle School teaching 8th grade US History and choreographing the school musical . She occasionally appears in a show of her own- catch her

in Thoroughly Modern Millie this spring at SBMT . Sarah Moulder (Co-Music Director) excitedly returns to the pit as Co-Music Director & Saxophonist for this production of Smokey Joe’s Café. By day, he’s a Software Developer for the Stanford Libraries .Michael MacKenzie (Co-Stage Manager) This marks Mike’s 46th production with WVLO, having most recently served as Co-Stage Manager for Spamalot last season . The majority of his time in this position is spent attending rehearsals and “manipulating” the sets and his crew once we are in the theater . He especially enjoys the latter part of this job . He often dons a costume to appear onstage as ballroom dancer, bartender, or whatever else is needed . Mike is a retired electronics guru and his hobbies include travel with his lovely wife, Cay, and photography . He is one of our most dedicated

and dependable volunteers .David Lamcke (Co-Stage Manager) returns for his thirteenth show with WVLO in a “behind the scenes” position, the latest in Bullets Over Broadway in 2017 . He has also performed in seven of our productions, the most recent was in Catch Me If You Can, the last musical in our 52nd Season . He also served as ASM for Plaid Tidings and Jesus Christ, Superstar. David is a dedicated volunteer and performer and we are always delighted when he shares his

time and talents with us .Judy Pincus (Costume Designer) This marks Judy’s 29th production as a Costumer, her most recent was Sister Act.
