Learning to manage changeThe utilities marketplace has been moving in new directions for many years. Successful businesses need to learn new skills, develop new capabilities and work with new partners to stay ahead.

It’s been happening for nearly two decades, now: transformational change in almost all of the world’s utility markets. Across most of Europe deregulation is now an established fact. There is tougher competition than before, leading to consolidation and a constant battle to retain existing customers and find new ones.

Churn has reached unprecedented levels, as new regulations make it far easier to move suppliers, and do so repeatedly. In electricity and gas, vertical integration between production, transportation and supply has all but disappeared, making it easier still to pick and choose.

And transformation in the market is not just about regulatory change: there is also strong and growing pressure on resources, with new emphasis on sustainability, environmental performance and use of renewable energy.

Prices for fossil fuels are rising fast, leading to massive investment in new production sources, from offshore wind farms to new nuclear power stations, while strategic energy policy is now a top priority for most governments. In water, as well, there are widespread shortages, with most parts of Europe suffering increased pressure on availability at a time when usage is still rising fast.

New capabilities, new partnershipsWhen a market is unpredictable and evolving at high speed we can be sure of one thing: there will be both winners and losers in the years ahead. To stay in the game, it is essential to boost performance in some critical areas:

Customer service: consumers and businesses alike have choice, now, and will exercise their right to find the lowest-cost, highest quality supplier. Utilities a real step-change in service quality and customer management if they are to increase loyalty, reduce churn and raise margins.

Operational efficiency: there is only one way the energy cost graph is moving in the long-term, and that is up. To deliver a competitive service while safeguarding profits means cutting fixed costs as far and as fast as possible. That means bringing new levels of efficiency into everything you do.

The Smart agenda: technology is reshaping the market, with smart grids, smart metering and micro-generation driving new levels of efficiency, reducing emissions and enabling development of distributed generation.

So what’s the right answer? How do utilities compete successfully in a new world while profiting from change? The simple answer is through using Atos SAP for Utilities solutions, and this is why:

Most utility companies already use SAP as the basis for managing their core processes, but in most cases they are not unlocking the full potential of their investment to drive change for the better in all key operational areas. That’s where Atos can make a real and immediate difference.

A2A A2A is the third largest energy producer and distributor in Italy, formed by merger in 2007. They came to e-utile for help with a range of key requirements: from boosting customer loyalty, improving business continuity and preparing for Smart Metering in electricity and gas. e-utile has delivered a highly efficient meter replacement program, automated remote management of Smart Meters, green datacenter with comprehensive disaster recovery capabilities and integrated CRM and billing. The results? Savings of around 40% on meter replacement and management, 20% improvement in billing accuracy and a real boost to the company’s brand and reputation.

Bewag AG Bewag AG is one of Austria’s key regional utilities and when deregulation started to change the rules of the game in the market, they came to Atos to implement CRM for Utilities across their entire IT environment. The project involved internet-based self-service options for customers, was fully integrated into the existing billing service and included advanced analytics, as well. After a fast and efficient implementation process, Bewag is now able to present ‘one face to the customer, improve targeting and ensure higher levels of customer loyalty.’

Dolomiti Energia Dolomiti Energia is the key energy provider in Italy’s mountainous north eastern region, and it faced the challenge of preparing to replace existing meters with new Smart Meters, integrating Smart Metering with SAP IS-U, introducing a new tariff management approach and fine-tuning the entire IT environment to cope with these major changes. Working with e-utile, the company now has a successful automated Smart Meter management system, comprehensive meter replacement program and much more efficient IT environment. The figures to date are impressive: 20% fewer claims and almost no errors in billing. Billing engine 65% more efficient, optimization of SAP IS-U and rapid installation of new meters.

Vattenfall Europe For Vattenfall Europe, Energy4U carried out one of Europe’s most comprehensive SAP IS-U 2010+ System split and harmonization projects, starting in 2010. The key objective of the project was to migrate private and business customers belonging to Vattenfall’s electricity and gas division from the Berlin and Hamburg regions into two separate systems. This has involved consolidation of two heterogeneous IS-U systems and then splitting the Grid Operator and Retailer systems in parallel to meet new regulatory requirements. Moving to the target systems allows for both maximum harmonization of the complete SAP environment and improved customization for better service delivery.

Allgäuer Überlandwerk GmbH Allgäuer Überlandwerk GmbH is the largest regional supplier of electricity in the Allgäu region in the South of Germany. Energy4U’s expert team has provided vital support to the customer in all key aspects of their Reporting and Data Warehouse solutions. This has delivered new functionality that has led to measurable improvements in broads areas of performance. Examples include implementation of a mass simulation scenario for financial statements, a gross margin planning application and a Smart Meter cluster analysis tool to help in improved customer segmentation.

EnBWEnBW is the third-largest energy company in Germany, and a key supplier to a large number of business clients as well as to many millions of domestic gas and electricity users. Energy4U has worked with EnBW PowerPack to harmonize their IS-U system, carrying out the project at exceptionally high speed. The project has enabled more accurate and timely billing to major clients, including municipal utilities and regional suppliers. Our team used SAP migration workbench and Atos migration tools, ensuring short project run-time and high quality data.
