“Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world.”— Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur (1822 – 1895) e French chemist and microbiologist is best known for his discovery of how to treat milk to prevent bacterial contamination, a process we now know as pasteurization. He also developed the rst vaccines for rabies and anthrax, and his discoveries have saved countless lives ever since.

This Month: Use rubbing alcohol to wipe down frequently used surfaces that you don’t normally clean — your cell phone, your steering wheel, and even your computer keyboard. These all have high bacteria counts and can cause colds, flus, and bacterial infections.

“Hope is the only good that is common to all men; those who havenothing else possess hope still.”— ales of Miletus

ales of Miletus (624 BC - 546 BC) ales attempted to explain natural phenomena without reference to mythology, making him what many consider to be the rst scientist in history. In mathematics, ales used geometry to calculate the heights of pyramids and the distance of ships from the shore, and is the earliest individual to whom a mathematical discovery has been attributed.

is Month: ales once said, “e most dicult thing in life is to know yourself.” is year, instead of coming up with a New Year’s Resolution, crete a Personal Mission Statement and place it somewhere you’ll see it every day. It can bring far more direction to your life than simply nixing one bad habit.

FEBRUARY“Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.” — Rosalind Elsie Franklin

Rosalind Elsie Franklin (1920 – 1958) A British biophysicist and X-ray crystallographer, Franklin is best known for her work creating X-ray diraction images of DNA. is led directly to the discovery of the DNA double helix model by Watson and Crick in 1953. Had she not passed away from ovarian cancer at the young age of 37, she would likely have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

is Month: Early detection is key to preventing serious cancers. is month, see your doctor and make sure you are up to date on all the following cancer screenings: colon & rectal, cervical, breast, and prostate.

“One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remainsto be done.”— Marie Curie

Marie Curie (1867 – 1934) A physicist and chemist, Curie was the rst person (and only woman) to win two Nobel Prizes. Her achievements include postulating the theory of radioactivity (a term that she coined), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two elements, polonium and radium.

is Month: Curie passed on her love of science to her daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie, who herself won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935. is month, take your favorite book o the shelf, and pass it on to a younger relative, coworker, or neighbor you think it might inspire.

John Snow (1813 – 1858) An English physician best known for adding chlorine to water, which ended the cholera outbreak in London in 1854. Chlorination of public drinking water resulted in the virtual elimination of such waterborne diseases as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Life magazine later named water chlorination as “probably the most signicant public health advance of the millennium.”

“Man has always to be busy with his thoughts if anything is tobe accomplished.”— Antonie van Leeuwenhoek

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632 – 1723) e Dutch scientist is most famous for creating a microscope vastly more powerful than previous magnifying tools. is led to him being the rst to observe single-celled organisms in rainwater — microbes which, until then, no one even knew existed. He is widely considered the father of microbiology, and creator of one of the greatest technical advances in the history of science.

“e animal’s heart is the basis of its life, its chief member, the sun ofits microcosm; on the heart all its activity depends, from the heart allits liveliness and strength arise.” — William Harvey

William Harvey (1578 – 1657) Harvey, an English physician, was the rst person to correctly describe the way blood circulates in the body. He showed that arteries and veins form a complete circuit, and that the circuit starts at the heart and leads back to the heart. is upended 1,400 years of incorrect science that declared blood was actually pumped by the liver.

“We feel the beauty of nature because we are part of nature.”— Ernest Everett Just

Ernest Everett Just (1883 - 1941) Just was a pioneering biologist, and like many African-American scientists of his era, faced racial barriers to receiving proper acknowledgment of his work. Yet today, he is known as a dening voice in the eld of cytology, and his work revealed new invaluable insights into the structure and function of cells.

"Nature makes penicillin; I just found it.”— Alexander Fleming

Alexander Fleming (1881 - 1955) In September 1928, Fleming returned to his laboratory after a month away with his family, and noticed that a culture of bacteria had been contaminated by mold…and the mold had eradicated the bacteria. is chance accident led to the discovery of penicillin, and antibiotics in general, for which the Scottish bacteriologist was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945.

Galen inuenced the development of various scientic disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and neurology. His theories dominated Western medical science for more than 1,300 years.
