Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 10, 2014

Matthew 14:22-33 The disciples werent prepared to see Jesus walking on water. They had already witnessed plenty of miracles, but this miracle was different. This one wasnt to heal anyone or provide for anyone. This miracle seemed more like a manifestation: a clear revelation of Jesus divine power. But the disciples were slow to get the message. It wasnt until the storm ended and the disciples were safe that they made their profession of faith, Truly, you are the Son of God. The disciples faith seems to have been dependent upon the personal experience of being saved. This is what Jesus wants to do for every one of us. He became man to save us. He died on the cross to take away our fears, to forgive our sins, and to give us eternal life. These arent just stories about someone elses life. This is the story of our life. As with Peter, Jesus says to us, Come. May we respond with confidence, putting our trust in the One who has the power to calm the storms in our lives too.

Dear friends, I have three things to share with you this week: 1) On Friday, August 15, we have the Holy Day of Obligation for the Solem-nity of the Assumption. We will have an extra Mass in the evening at 7:00 pm so that you can fulfill your obliga-tion, that is, opportunity! During the

day there will be Eucharistic Adoration from the completion of the morning Mass to 6:30 pm before the evening Mass; there will be a rosary before the 7:00 pm Mass as well. Sign-up sheets are in the vestibule of the church to spend some time in prayer with our Lord. 2) Last week I conducted a survey with the daily mass com-munity about the effectiveness and inconveniences of moving the weekday Mass to 8:00 am. I have gathered the numbers and published the full statistics for your reflection in this bulletin on page 7. Thank you to all of you who took the time to fill out the questionnaire. 3.) It is with great joy that I invite you to spend some time to pray with a newly blessed statue that we have received here at Santa Sophia. The statue is our Blessed Mother under the title Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom. We did the blessing of the statue last Monday after Mass. Please stop by the northeast alcove of the church to offer prayers to Our Lady. You may recall that this last Solemnity of Pentecost in June that I made it officially our patron feast for Santa Sophia. This is because our name means Holy Wisdom, which is the first gift of the 7 traditional gifts of the Holy Spirit artic-ulated by the church and found in the Old Testament (cf. Isaiah 11). Just as parishes or Catholic organizations have a patronal feast they also have a particular patroness title of our Blessed Mother. For this reason I have chosen Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom to be our patroness title of Mary. The statue recalls the Child Jesus as being seated on the lap of Mary. Jesus is the Word of God Incarnate, literally Wisdom Incarnate and sits on the lap of Mary as a young child. This makes Mary the Seat of Wisdom. I pray our devotion for Mary will grow with fervor and piety as we ask for her intercession and prayers. Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom. Pray for us! In Christ,

    Real Questions by Real Parishioners:

The word tithe itself literally means a tenth or 10%. So when the bible speaks of tithing it is equivo-cation to say give 10% or give a tenth. Tithing was part of the socio-economic and religious culture of the Israelites. The various tribes of Israel were required to give a tenth of all produce, flocks, and cattle in order to support the Tribe of Levi. The Levites were the priestly tribe of Israel and were not given a specific land in which to provide for them-selves so it was up to the rest of the tribes to ensure that the Levites who took care of the priestly duties at the Temple would be provided for. (Cf. Leviticus 27:30-33) The Levites themselves also had to do a tithe of the tithe, that is, a tenth of the tenth. (Cf. Numbers 18:21-28) Verse 26 reads When you (the Levites) receive from the Israelites the tithes I have assigned you from them as your heritage, you are to make a con-tribution from them to the Lord, a tithe of the tithes. In addition to tithing, the Israelites were instructed to be generous to those who were in need: If there is a poor man among your brothers do not be hard-hearted rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs. Deuteronomy 15:7-8 From these Old Testament passages, some congre-gations require a tithing concept to the financial re-sources of the parishioners. However, in the New Testament and through Jesus we do not have a spe-cific mandate to tithe, that is, give one tenth of our income to the church. Some Catholic parishes seek to establish the concept, and it works. However, the re-ality must be taken into consideration that not all are capable of giving 10%, and some are capable of giv-ing more than 10%.

The New Testament doesnt spell out specifics but it would be fair to say it demands more of us than what

    ASK THE PASTOR

these Old Testament stipulations did of the Israel-ites. We are not just benefactors in financial mat-ters, we are servants of the Most High God and called to build the Kingdom of Heaven on earth and to be stewards of our time, talent, and treasure for the sake of the Churchs mission, of which we are members. Our giving to the church is also not to be done sole-ly as an obligation, but rather with great joy and generosity (2 Corinthians 9:6-15), and never for pub-lic recognition (Matthew 6:1-4). The decision to give to the Church and to charity is an inward matter, much the same as it is to choose to raise children Catholic, or to choose your friends wisely; what you sow in time, talent, and treasure you will reap and what you dont sow you wont reap; therefore the Church recommends to be generous. The words of St. Paul can be most beneficial: Let me say this much: He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully. Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudg-ingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Cor.9:6-7) What are the benefits of being a generous giver, that is, to deciding to support your parish community financially and with your time and talents? St. Paul shares four benefits with us in 2 Cor. 9:10-14: 1) It increases the harvest of your righteousness 2) It produces thanksgiving to God in those who re-ceive it 3) It will glorify Gods holy name, and 4) The people you give to, will pray for you! In conclusion I want to note that this needs to be an inward decision. When it comes to the financial as-pect using the envelopes or the e-giving method pro-vides exactly that opportunity for us to reflect on what it is ones family can actually give to the

    (Continued on page 7)

Why should we tithe 10%? What are some biblical examples and what did God promise us if we give out of our 1st fruits?

    PARISH GROUP NEWS

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY The pantry volunteers recently began a Monday morning fresh produce give away. Every Monday, beginning at 9:00 am, fresh produce is available to anyone, as long as it lasts. The St. Vincent de Paul Society had 344 families(1329 people) visit last month. Please remember that many of these families rely on subsidized school lunch pro-grams to feed their kids during the week, and that is not available during the summer months. Giving to the Santa Sophia food pantry directly helps those chil-dren in our community. If you'd like to make an actual food donation, Top Ramen and macaroni and cheese products are especially needed at this time.

    MORE FROM THE PASTOR

    .

    My Dear Friends,

I have recently submitted my resignation to

Fr. Jacob as Director of Liturgical Music and

Music Teacher at the Academy. My final

Sunday will be August 17. My future plans

for ministry are set and I will be working at

another parish in the Diocese of San Diego. I

cannot, however, say which church at this

time. I will ask Fr. Jacob to publish that in-

    formation in a few weeks.

I wish to extend my sincere thanks to all

those who welcomed me so warmly four and

a half years ago. My time at Santa Sophia

has been among the richest and most chal-

lenging of my professional life, due in large

    part to each of you.

Much gratitude belongs to the members of

our music ministry: The Liturgical Ensemble

especially Chris Dameron and Frank Gon-

zales who are loyal, faithful servants; The

Kids Chorale who sang so beautifully at eve-

    ry opportunity - taught me more than I them;

and the Santa Sophia Singers who, in their

    singing, inspire and evoke holiness.

My thanks and praise also are in order for the

unwavering support of Mrs. Karen Laaperi,

    academy principal, and our hard-working

church and academy staff. May Gods bless-

    ing always be upon them.

Pax et bonum! (Peace and good!)
