DNA for BYOD Device Neutral Activities for Bring Your Own Device
Coined by Milliner of KATE
Goal: Change the media, not the content
Melinda Louvier & Adelina Rucker Pearland ISD Educational Technology Specialists
Today’s Objectives:
• Explain what BYOD is
• Discuss BYOD classroom management
options and strategies
• Look at samples of Device Neutral tools
Digital Citizenship
What is it? Appropriate, responsible behavior when using technology
• Not just a BYOD topic
• Should be the focus this year and every year
• “Digital Footprint” more like a tattoo
• Common Sense Media
BYOD in the News
BYOD Classroom Management
• Plan ahead: How many devices? What
kind of devices? Device limitations?
What are you planning on “cooking”?
• Communicate the need for parents to
teach students how to access settings,
type usernames and passwords, and
then practice, practice, practice!
BYOD Classroom Management
• Notify students ahead of time to bring
devices FULLY CHARGED from home
• Display BYOD sign on door and around
campus
• Set up ground rules (no sharing of
devices, when is it ok to have devices out,
decide on consequences before the
behavior happens, etc.) per SFISD’s AUP
BYOD Classroom Management
• Devices face down on desktop
• Monitor, Monitor, Monitor (know what
to look for)
• Ask 3 Before Me (Teacher is not
responsible for trouble shooting student
devices)
• Have a plan B. And a plan C and D!

• Practice classroom
expectations/procedures: ex.
screen down, spot check, etc.
Do:
• Have a plan in place for dealing
with students who overstep their
boundaries.
• Create index card, license, list, etc.
with log-in information and keep it
handy all year
Do:
• Set realistic goals -“In the next 10
minutes, we will…”
• Share BYOD student projects with
parents, teachers, community to
increase buy-in

Do:
Don’t:
Give up! Yoda was wrong; there is such a thing
as “Try”.
If it works, great! If it doesn’t, re-think your
approach and try again.
