NO FATALITIES IN PLANE FLIP

Four young men were slightly injured Saturday afternoon when their private planeground looped on attempting to take off from a Sanibel road.

Deputy. Sheriff Dave Wooster said the pilot of the plane was Selemo (Sam) Albert,29, of Miami. His passengers were Norman Levinsky, 26, of Pompano Beach; GilbertEnglish, 26, of Miami; and Phillip Birmelin, 25, of Hialeah.

The Sanibel air strip was covered with water and Albert asked for permission totake off from thepavedportionof Gulf Drive on Casa Ybel property next to the unusablerunway. Permission was granted and Wooster sealed off Gulf Drive at the appointedtime,,

Albert's attempted take-off was downwind, Wooster said."He clipped a stop signwith his right wing and veered off into some woods. He mushed down about 300 feetfrom the road."

All the injured were treated and released at Lee Memorial Hospital. The plane, aCessna 172, was destroyed.

CONSERVANCY CONVENTION

The Ninth Annual Convention of the Florida Chapter of The Nature Conservancywill be held at Sanibel Island on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 1, 2 and 3, with theSanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation as host for the event. All meetings and mealswill be held in the banquet room of the Golden Sands Restaurant, Periwinkle Way.

Highlight of the conventionwwill be an address by Thomas Richards, president ofThe Nature Conservancy, who will fly to Sanibel from national headquarters in Wash-ington to speak to delegates and guests at a banquet Saturday night. "Private Actionfor Land Conservation" is the title of Mr. Richard's address. Toastmaster for thebanquet will be Griffing Bancroft, a director in the Sanibel-Captiva ConservationFoundation.

Roy E. Bazire, chairman of the board of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Found-ation, and Mrs. George Winterbotham, vice-chairman, are serving jointly as chairmenfor the Florida Chapter's convention.

The meeting gets underway with registration tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. Thiswill be followed by a 6:00 o'clock dinner. MarioJchrtton, president of the S a n i b e l -Captiva Audubon Society, will present the entertainment for the evening when he giveshis photo-verse lecture, "Our Roseate Realm . . . A World Worth Saving.".Mr. Bazirewill welcome members of the Chapter to the Islands. The Board of Trustees of theFlorida Nature Conservancy will meet at 8 p.m.

At 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Charles E. LeBuff, J r . , biological technician for theU. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Director of Caretta Research Project for t h eSanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation will present his excellent color film, "Sav-ing the Loggerhead." at 1 p.m. Saturday, the conservation group will hold its annualbusiness meeting and election of officers.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, members of the board of directors of the Sanibel-CaptivaConservation Foundation will describe the five major conservation projects of theFoundation which won national recognition through the American Heritage Award.

Following a social hour at 6:30 pom. Saturday, the banquet will get underway at7:30 p.m,, It is not open to the public due principally to the very limited space avail-able,

Sunday morning at 8 a.m., two bird tours of the Islands wUl be conducted by Griff-ing Bancroft and Hal H. Harrison. Mario Huttonwill lead a third group interested inwildlife photography. These tours are open only to members of the Florida Chapterof the Nature Conservancy.

Open house at the Caretta Research Station for the loggerhead turtle project onTarpon Bay will be conducted at 11 a.m. Mr. LeBuff will be host. (Caretta is the sci-entific name for the loggerhead turtle.)

Guests will be free Sunday afternoon to enjoy the Islands as they wish.In 1971, the Florida Chapter of the Nature Conservancy will be entertained i n

FLORiDA LEGISLATORS PASSWILDLIFE PROTECTION BILLS

Several wildlife protection bills deal-ing with alligators, manta rays, sea tur-tles and stone crabs were passed onApril 15, 1970 by the Florida Sta teLegislature. Sen Warren Henderson, R.,Venice was instrumental in passing theconservation bills.

One measure imposes imprisonmentfrom 10 days to five years for convictedalligator poachers, and makes the use oflights and weapons at night evidence ofthe intent to violate the alligator pro-tection laws.

Henderson, a director of the power-ful Conservation organization, also isbacking anti-pollution measures.

Another bill which was approved wasone making it unlawful to catch stonecrabs between May 15 and Oct. 15 or topossess or sell a stone crab with a clawless than 4 1/2" long.

"Scuba or skin divers damaging ortampering with crawfish traps or poach-ing of crawfish traps would be chargedwith a misdemeanor," said sponsor Sen.Edmund Gong, D., Miami. Alsoapproved•vas a bill providing protection of theManta Ray.

Many northern folks want clover intheir lawns according to the F l o r i d aNurserymen and Growers Association(FNGA). But clover is considered a weedin Florida. It will die out in the hot,summer months, and if permitted togrow during the winter months it onlysmothers out your permanent lawn.

Winter weeds that have been growingluxuriantly will soon begin to wane.Don't waste a lot of chemicals on theseweeds. They are more difficult to killas they approach maturity.

If you have lost plants during thepast winter and are thinking of hardyornamentals, don't go overboard. Selecta basic planting that will give you thetropical effect. Have a definite plan inmind when you purchase plants. Selectplants that will give you t e x t u r e ofleaves, color, and blossoms. If theseare well arranged you will have an out-standing picture created around yourhomo.

Gladiolus will now be in bloom inmany localities and one of the most dif-ficult pests to control on gladiolus is thethrip. Thrips are a chewing or raspinginsect. They may mottle the flowers,cause streaks in the leaves, or in theearly stages of bud production causedistortion. Thrips can be controlled bymalathion or diazinon. Repeated appli-cations of these materials may be nec-nessary at intervals of two or threeweeks.

Gardenias are a spring floweringshrub, at least some varieties are. Afterthey have produced their first set ofblossoms there may be a need for prun-ing of the long stems which produced theflowers. If shearing or pruning is ac-complished shortly after blossom'ng ofthe plant, a second flush of blossomsmay appear.

Gardenia bushes quite often show aniron or manganiesB deficiency. On oc-casion both of these appear on the plantand may be confused. To be sure that youapply both of these materials. Don'toverdo it.

Keep your plants in bounds by prun-ing says the FNGA. Don't be afraid ofpruning shears. After all, plants willgrow as rapidly as you force them andretain the shape you make them,

As warm weather and signs of springcall Floridians to outdoor recreationalactivities the Florida Highway Patrolreminds drivers to give boat and camp-er trailers a close inspection after thewinter's rest.

Patrol Commander Colonel ReidClifton said, "Special attention shouldbe given to campers and boat trailersthat have been stored during the pastwinter. All equipment should be inspect-ed to see that safety items are function-ing properly."

Clifton asked motorists to checktires for wear and proper inflation.Safety chains of sufficient strength tokeep a trailer connected in the eventof an accidental breakage of the hitchare required by law.

All turn signals, stop and taillightsshould be checked for proper function-ing said Clifton.

The Patrol Commander urged motor-ists to be familiar with the speed limitsfor vehicles towing trailers and remind-ed that the weight, length and type oftrailer dictates the speed limit.

2 lbs. Flounder1 cup seasoned medium white sauce or

1 envelope white-sauce mix1 tsp. prepared mustard2 hard-cooked eggs, choppedCoa-sely ground black pepperChopped fresh dill or dillweed

Cut fish in 6 portions and drain onpaper towels. Prepare white sauce in10" skillet and season with the mustard,,Arrange fish, skin side down, in saucein skillet. Bring to boil, reduce heat,cover and simmer 12 minutes, or untilfish is opaque and flakes easily withfork. Spoon some of the sauce on eachsteak and garnish with eggs, pepper anddill. FLORIDA ECONOMY EXPANDINGFASTER THAN WHOLE NATION'S

Florida economy is expanding both inquantity and quality at a faster rate thanthe nation's giving the state a largerproportion of National totals accordingto Ronald S. Spencer, Jr., ExecutiveVice President of the State Chamber ofCommerce. "Seven comparable gaugesof Florida's and Nation's economy wereselected as representative in measur-ing the state's relative economic weight,both in Quantity and quality," he said.These gauges are noted in the stateChambers weekly business review aspersonal income, retail sales, popul-ation, employment, bank assets, lifeinsurance and electric power product-ion.

Personal income of Floridians madeup 1.59 per cent of the entire nationaltotal in 1950; 2.44% in 1960 and 2.97%in 1969. Retail sales in Florida, rela-tively strong because of the touristbusiness, accounted for 2% of the nation-al total in 1950; 3.08% in 1960 and 3O61%last year.

Florida's population and employmentincreases followed the same upward

, trend and by 1969 accounted for 3.12%of the Nation's population and 2.96% ofthe wage-earners employed. Th i ssmaller proportion of employment thanof population is an indication of the manyretirees living in the state.

Florida looms large in the product-ion of electricity and accounted for 3.29%of the national total production of utilityand industrial electricity up from 1.44%in 1950. Life insurance in force in Flor-ida moved from 1.43% in 1950 to 2.72%of national in 1969. Bank assets stood at1.12% in 1950 and had increased to 2.54%last year.

Slice onions. Cover with water andcook until tender but crisp. Spread drain-ed onions in a shallow, well-greasedbaking pan. Cut fish into individual ser-ving pieces. Place fish pieces over on-ions. Cocnu'ne remaining ingredients.Blend well. Spread mixture on fishpieces. Bake in a 350 oven for 30-40minutes or until fish flakes. Serve witha low calorie bread and cauliflower.Serves 6.

1/4 cup butter or margarine1 green pepper, seeded and coarsely

juice1 can (1 pint) clam-tomato juice1 1/2 lbs, fish filletsSaltHot pepper sauce

Melt butter in heavy 5 to 6 quartkettle or Dutch oven. Add next 7 ingred-ients and bring to boil. Add whole por-tions of unthawed fish, cover and sinmer25 minutes, or until fish is opaque andflakes easily with fork. Stir to break fishin small pieces. Season to taste with saltand hot pepper sauce.

Melt 2 tbsp. butter in smallsaucepan. Add shallots and sautea minute or less, just until theyare tender. Stir in 2 tablespoonsflour, mixing well. Slowly stir inclam broth and heavy cream,mixing with wire ship. Bring to aboll; reduce heat and simmerabout 5 minutes, stirring fre-quently. Add salt and pepper totaste and a dash of cayenne pep-per. Keep covered until needed.In small bowl, combine eggs,bread crumbs and parsley, mix-ing thoroughly. Set a s i d e .Sprinkly pompano with salt, pep-per and celery salt. Dip in flour.Saute in oil over brisk flame untillight brown; use just enough oil tokeep fillets from sticking to pan(too much will prevent browning);wipe pan clean from time to timeand add fresh oil as needed. Pre-heat oven at 450. Place fillets insingle layer on a large heatproofplatter, shallow pan or casserole.Spread sauce on f i l l e t s andsprinkle with bread crumb mix-ture. Heat fillets in oven about 5minutes. Melt 1/4 lb. butter inskillet and heat until it turnslight brown. Add lemon juice andpour over fillets. Serve at once.Serves 6.

1 bunch scallions with green tops, chop-ped (1 cup)

2 green peppers, seeded and thinly sliced3 tbsp. olive or other salad oil2 lbs. fillet of flounderSalt and pepper to taste2 fresh tomatoes, thinly sliced1 lemon, thinly sliced1/2 cup chopped parsley

Put green onions and peppers insaucepan, add oil and saute, stirring oc-casionally over low heat 10 minutes.Rinse fillets under running cold water anddrain on paper towels. Fold over andplace in greased shallow baking dish,,Sprinkle with salt and pepper and spreadwith green onion mixture. A r r a n g etomato and lemon slices on top. Bake inmoderate oven (350 F) 25 minutes, oruntil fish is opaque and flakes easilywith fork. Garnish with parsley. Makes4 to 6 servings.

SCRAMBLED EGGS AND OYSTERS

1 egg, slightly beaten1 tbsp. water24 large fresh oystersFlour3/4 cup, pkg. bread crumbs1/2 cup butter or margarine12 eggs1/2 cup heavy cream1 tsp. saltDash of pepper2 tbsp. chopped chives or parsley

Mix slightly beaten egg and water.Roll oysters in flour, dip in egg-watermixture, roll in crumbs to coat well.Heat 1/4 cup butter or margarine inlarge skillet over medium heat. Sauteoysters until golden brown on all sides.Remove from skillet, keep warm. Beat12 eggs, cream, salt, pepper and chivesor parsley together. Melt 2 tbsp. butteror margarine in large skillet over lowheat. Add half the egg mixture. Lift frombottom and sides as misture cooks. Cook5 to 7 minutes or until eggs are thickenedand set but still moist. Remove to servingplatter, keep warm. Cook remaining eggmixture the same way. Add to eggs onplatter. Top with oysters. Makes 12 ser-vings.

SHRIMP NEWBURG

2 cups diced boiled shrimp2 tsp. sherry flavoring1/4 cup melted buttertsp. flour11/4 cups thin cream2 egg yolks, beaten1/4 tsp. saltI tsp. lemon juicePaprika

Heat the shrimp thoroughlywith the sherry and 3 tbsp. of thebutter, being careful not to brownthe butter. In another saucepan,combine the remaining b u t t e rwith flour, then add the cream.Now place over direct heat andstire constantly until sauce boils.Remove from heat, stir into thebeaten egg yolks, then return tothe saucepan, cooking over lowheat with constant stirring for 2minutes or until thickened. Addthe heated shrimp and seasoningsand mix well, but do not heatagain or the sauce may curdle.Serve immediately with toastedcrackers or crisp toast. 5 ser-vings.

SHRIMP WITH DILL SAUCE

1/3 cup butter or margarine1/3 cup all-purpose flour2 1/4 tsp. salt1 1/4 tsp. dill weed4 cups milk6 cups cooked medium shrimp

(about 2 1/2 lbs. shelled, de-veined shrimp)

About 45 minutes before ser-ving: In medium saucepan overmedium heat, melt butter or mar-garine and blend in flour, salt anddill. Slowly add milk, stirringconstantly, until smooth andthickened; add shrimp; serveover toast. Makes 8 servings.

Congressman William C. Cramer of St. Petersburg did some research on Route 1-75extension between Miami and Tampa. Congressman Cramer as a member of the HousePublic Works Committee said that even if Congress coughs up some $718 million Flor-ida would have to come up with $71.8 million to meet their share of the bill. Floridaonly has $105 million a year for total maintenance and construction of all primaryroads in the state, and the-primary source of the money comes from gasoline taxes.

Work on I-10 in North Florida still goes on, and work continues on 1-95 on the EastCoast. This has been going on for 14 years and the end is no where in sight, and so noone knows when anything relieving traffic onU. S. 41 can be considered. So rather thanhold out falso hopes for 1-75 anytime in the foreseeable future we must push for fourlaning of the old Tamiami Trail. Work goes on apace in Collier County, why not in LeeCounty? Secretary of Transportation, Ed Mueller, new in his $33,000 a year job, wehope is going to give us some answers from Tallahassee.

DELOZIER TALKS OF BEACH EROSION

Engineer F. James DeLozier spoke to the Southwest Florida Conservation Clear-inghouse on Thursday morning, complimenting Miss Hedwig Michels in her efforts toestablish erosion checks above the water mark. Miss Michels told the clearinghouseat the Lee County Mosquito Control District offices that the Beach studies have goneOP 'nee the early 1940's by the Koreshan Unity's efforts on Fort Myers Beach to es -ta h erosion checks by planting low, tight-rooted plants to protect the soil duringhurricanes and also structures near them. If a tree, such as .an Australian pine, isallowed to grow tall instead of being topped in an umbrella shape, it will fall and up-root in a high wind ripping the soil open to the rain, wind and waves, tilting structuresabove the roots and crushing structures below the tree. Experiments in many differentkind of planting, even of fruit f fesr down to the water line are being done, and theplanting must be protected from vandals.

"Many people have misinterpreted what she is trying to do," said DeLozier. "Thesand shelf along the coast i s constantly changing with wind, weather and tides, but soilcontrol inland i s controlling the sweep of sand down rivers and creeks to the Gulf ofMexico. The pipeline of sand has natural breaks and interruptions. The extreme deep-ening of these passes and inlets by many creates a barrier, sweeping the sand out tosea with the current. A groin may stabilize the beach for a time but in time the sandmoves on and erodes. Added to this is a change in sea level, and even an inch risecauses higher tides along the coastline. The Gulf of Mexico is rising. Florida and otherresort areas are making very serious efforts to stop the erosion, but so far none has

The problem of preserving the natural scenic beauty of the Whiskey Creek areawas discussed by George Meskimen, a resident of the area. It seems the developershave agreed to make every effort to incorporate and occasional mangrove island anda natural appearing seawall system.

PROMOTION FILM ON AREA SHOWN CHAMBER

Directors of the Fort Myers-Lee County Chamber of Commerce were shown a pre-view of the local resorter promotion film, "The Lemon Sun" on April 16. Local scenesare recorded in refreshing color and beauty, and the film will take 14 1/2 minutestelevision viewing, according to Mgr. Don Bottorf.

The advertising committee has authorized the purchase of 15 prints of the film; onefor the Fort Myers Public Library, one for Lee Memorial Hospital, three for theChamber of Commerce and ten for distribution throughout the U. S. The film was pro-duced by Charles Fuller Productions of Tampa and emphasizes the lovely beauty oflocal color scenes.

Wilburn Leonhardt, advertising committee chairman reported a new sports anditivities page in the Fort Myers-Lee County brochure will feature color photos ofie Kansas City Royals in training here.

Bob Bruce, chairman of the promotion committee, said the Sun-Coach tour will tourthe eastern seaboard states in August and September, including Niagara Falls and theNew England states. Fort Myers Day will be Sept. 12 in Kansas City, Ka. and KansasCity, Mo. will host Fort Myers on Sept. 11.

2 lbs, Florida sea troutSalt and white pepper1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted1 medium onion, thinly sliced2 bay leaves, crushed1/2 cup chili sauce

Cut fish in 6 portions and drain onpaper towels,, Arrange each portion incenter of l l " square of heavy-duly foiland sprinkle lightly with salt and pep-

per. Add remaining ingredients, dividingequally. Bring foil up over fish and seallengthwise edges together with doublefold. Seal ends in same way, turning upso that juices will not run out duringcooking. Arrange packages in shallow panand bake in hot oven (400F) 25 minutes,or until fish is opaque and flakes easilywith fork. Serve in foil packages. Goodwith rice or parsley potatoes. Makes 6servings.
