2012 is going to be a special year for many reasons.Arthur Frommer has named Sanibel Island 2012’s number one vacation destination in the world. He ranked us ahead of Bali & Paris; two world class destinations. To those of us who live and work here and love the islands this is quite a thrill and should provide our entire community a richly deserved boost, not to mention worldwide attention. We’re pleased that Mr. Frommer shares the love we have for our beautiful sanctuary islands.This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce. Legend has it that Francis Bailey and other island businessmen gathered together one Sunday morning in the 1950’s on a wood pile down by the ferry landing. There were three businessmen from Captiva, three from Sanibel and one whose business was located at Blind-Pass. They joined together to form the Sanibel-Captiva Business Association. In 1962 this group became the Sanibel-
Captiva Chamber of Commerce. As Francis put it, they were not just concerned about business on the island but also about protecting the quality of island life. One of the accomplishments he is most proud of is their ability to keep high rise buildings off the islands. Today’s chamber carries the same philosophy of working for the businesses yet insuring that the quality of life on the island retains its ties to the natural environment.The 50th Anniversary Celebration will be held at The Chamber on February 20th at 5:30. All members are invited to attend and view the history of this world class destination we are privileged to call home.
