(ARA) - Warm weather wel-comes more than just outdoorbarbeques, summer vacationand vegetable gardens - itbrings back the pests that liketo annoy us. Insect problemsare more than just irritating -they can potentially pose seri-ous risks. If you're struggling tosolve a pest problem in oraround your home, and don'twant to pay for someone tosolve it for you, there are DIYsolutions that are effective andaffordable."While not all insects are harm-ful, some, such as ticks, mos-quitoes and fleas, can carry life-threatening diseases," saysLarry Coltharp, director of insectcontrol research and develop-ment with Black Flag, a leaderin pest control solutions. "Some

insects prefer building danger-ous nests outside your home, while others find little voids tocreep inside and then lay eggsin hidden areas around yourhouse. This is when it canbecome a serious health threatto small children and pets, andbecomes necessary to treatyour house to remove theserisks from your environment."A new product from BlackFlag, Extreme Home InsectControl, is ideal for DIYers look-ing to solve or prevent bugproblems on their own, espe-cially in today's tough economy. The Pump 'n Spray unit, avail-able at Lowe's for around $16,offers an average savings of$100 versus calling a profes-sional exterminator. It's simpleto use and proven effective in

killing 47 types of insects, bothinside and outside of the home. The new system creates along-lasting perimeter ofdefense against bugs, notablyup to nine months againstGerman cockroaches. The 1.33-gallon Pump 'n Spray containerrequires just 12 to 15 pumps toproduce up to 10 minutes ofcontinuous spraying. Children, pets and adults can enter treat-ed areas once the spray hasfully dried.

For maximum protectionagainst pests, Coltharp recom-mends applying the sprayaround the perimeter of yourhome, indoors and out.Prevention is the best solution -so spray all possible points ofentry for insects, includingdoors, cracks, crevices andexterior windows. Don't forget tocover areas like the attic andgarage.

How to take pest control andprevention into your own hands

Simple DIY tips for pest preventionSpring is here, which means insects are waking up hungry and looking for cool

places to nest. Here are some tips from Black Flag on how to deter a few commonpests around your home:

* Ants. Ants enter homes seeking food, moisture and shelter from extreme outdoorweather. To prevent ants from entering indoors, seal window frames and keepkitchen and food storage areas clean. Make sure sugar and honey items are storedin sealed containers. Remove garbage daily and inspect indoor potted plants, asthey could be indoor nesting sites.

* Spiders. Spiders can be found under furniture, inside boxes, closets, shoes andother secluded places. To reduce infestation, seal under outside doorways, clean thebasement and closets and eliminate clutter to reduce habitats.

* Scorpions. All scorpions can sting, so be careful when treating them. To preventscorpions from entering your home, make sure all screens, outside doorways andcracks are properly sealed. Scorpions are most active at night and seek protectedareas during the day. Remove all debris from the side of the house, such as boards, firewood and rocks.

* Roaches. Cockroaches hide in warm places where food and water is available.Keep kitchens and bathrooms sanitized and eliminate all food sources. Keep foodsealed in containers, repair water leaks, use steel wool to close openings aroundpipes that penetrate walls, seal under outside doorways and around window frames.Use waterproof silicone caulking to seal cracks and crevices.

* Yellow jackets. Most species of yellow jackets are attracted to meat products, aswell as garbage cans and dumpsters. They are also attracted to fruit and soft drinks.Keep garbage cans sealed and remove food sources to reduce yellow jackets fromover-populating. They often build nests in the ground, rodent holes, tree stumps andwall voids of buildings.

* Mosquitoes. To prevent mosquitoes from entering the home, keep doors andwindows closed and make sure window screens are in good condition. Outdoors, eliminate standing water which mosquitoes need to reproduce, such as in flowerpots, old tires, ornamental ponds, children’s wading pools, buckets, pails and lowareas in the lawn and garden. Mosquitoes are most active early morning and lateevening.

(ARA) - With the arrival ofwarmer weather, it can be achallenge to keep yourhome cool and comfortable, yet keep your energy bills incheck. By taking steps nowto make your home moreenvironmentally friendly, you'll not only help save nat-ural resources, but you'llsave money, too. With air conditioners andappliances running through-out the summer, it's easy toburn up energy and raisecosts. In fact, the energyused in the average house isresponsible for twice asmany greenhouse gas emis-sions than the average car, according to the U.S.Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA). To help youget started in "greening"your home, AmericanStandard Heating & AirConditioning offers thesetips.Pre-set indoor tempera-tures. One of the easiest andsimplest things you can dois install a programmablethermostat. It will allow youto cut cooling costs up to 6percent for every degree youraise your thermostat in thesummer. Some models allowyou to pre-set temperaturesfor every day of the week tomatch your family's comingsand goings.Reduce energy, increasehome comfort. For efficientair conditioning, make sureyour system meets thenewest government energystandards. For example, youcan save up to 47 percenton heating and air condition-ing costs while reducinggreenhouse gas emissions

with the American StandardAllegiance (R) 15 AirConditioner. It surpassescurrent government efficien-cy standards when installedas part of a complete sys-tem, and cools with an envi-ronmentally-friendly ozone-safe refrigerant to help keepcosts to a minimum, even onthe hottest days.*Many energy-efficient airconditioner models meetefficiency requirements for afederal energy tax creditwhen installed as part of acomplete system. Thanks tothe passage of the AmericanRecovery and ReinvestmentAct, homeowners may be eli-gible for a tax credit if theypurchase certain heating, ventilation and air condition-ing systems by Dec. 31. Formore information, visit amer-icanstandard-air.com/HomeOwner/LatestUpdates/Tax_Stimulus_2009.aspx.Lights out, costs down.Increasing your lighting effi-ciency is one of the fastestways to decrease your elec-tricity bills, according to theU.S. Department of Energy(DOE). Turn lights off whenyou leave the room or add ina dimmer to see instantenergy savings. Installing anoccupancy sensor that auto-matically turns lights on andoff when someone entersand leaves the room willalso save energy andmoney. For example, youcan save up to 50 percentenergy when replacing astandard light switch with aMaestro Occupancy Sensorwith eco-dim Dimmer fromLutron Electronics.

Shut out high energy bills.Your exterior door may becontributing to your home'soverall energy usage. Newermodels often fit and insulatebetter than older models andreplacing your old dooroften reaps both energy-and money-saving benefits. The ENERGY STAR (R)-qual-ified Fiber-Classic (R)Mahogany Collection (TM)from Therma-Tru (R) createsthe tightest seal possible, stabilizing interior tempera-tures and therefore decreas-ing your home's energy con-sumption.Other simple savers. Evensmall acts of green can

make a difference. The DOErecommends simple saverssuch as turning off yourcomputer and monitor whennot in use; lowering the ther-mostat on your water heaterto 120 degrees; taking shortshowers instead of bathsand washing only full loadsof dishes and clothes. Visitwww.energy.gov for moreideas.* Potential energy savingsmay vary depending on yourlifestyle, system settings, equipment maintenance, local climate, home con-struction and installation ofequipment and duct system.

It’s too easy these days to livealmost exclusively in a climate-controlled, electronic world.Your days are spent going fromair-conditioned house, to car, toworkplace; with your ear gluedto a cell phone or your fingerstyping away on your personaldigital assistant in between. Butas people try to re-connect withnature, a new trend in homedesign—bringing the indoorsoutside—is emerging. Outdoor remodeling projectscan be one of the more afford-able and enjoyable projects;adding value to your home. The options for these projectsare endless and include:patios, decks, screened inporches, outdoor fire pits, gar-dens, outdoor kitchens, etc…Here are a few out of the ordi-nary ideas you may have neverconsidered for an outdoorremodeling project.Fire elements. These can takethe form of fireplaces or firepits, or be as simple as a free-standing clay chimenea. Wood-burning elements are the mostcommon, but they can also beoutfitted to burn gas. Each hasits own advantages or disad-vantages with cost, mainte-nance, and other considera-tions such as smell or thecrackling sound commonlyassociated with wood fires. Firepits can be portable or built-in,and are often made with mate-rials such as copper, iron orstone. Some feature colored, decorative glass pieces laid outin designs that reflect theflames. Beds. Forget about ham-mocks or folding lawn chairs.

Today, the trend is all aboutultimate comfort. Outdoor bedshave been seen on the pooldecks of chic hotels in hipcities like Miami and LosAngeles for years. Designed forlounging or even napping, theycome in a variety of sizes, gen-erally have a futon-style mat-tress, and some haveadjustable backrests. They arecovered in weatherproof fabric, and matching your colorscheme is easy with coordinat-ing throw pillows. There areeven porch swings available intwin and double mattress sizes, for the ultimate napping spot…Showers. As the line goesfrom Monty Python… “now forsomething completely different”Formerly seen just at beachhouses and used strictly forremoving sand, outdoor show-ers enclosures are now foundin multi-million dollarManhattan penthouses, apart-ment rooftops and suburbanneighborhoods for everydayuse. They incorporate naturalelements such as stone, bam-boo and plants, and are strate-gically designed to provide pri-vacy, yet allow the user toenjoy the view and the feelingof showering in nature.Outdoor Kitchens. An out-door kitchen area completewith: cook top, grill, sink, coun-tertops, and refrigerator makesthe perfect entertainment areafor gatherings. Couple thiswith an outdoor fire pit and youhave an outdoor areas that canbe easily used most of the yearin our area. The options areendless and can be as simpleor elegant as your taste and

budget call for.Having inviting outdoor livingspaces in your home will helpwhen it’s time to sell, too. In theNational Association of HomeBuilders’ ConsumerPreferences Surveys for both2004 and 2007, more thanthree-quarters of respondentssaid having a patio, front porchor deck on their home was“desirable” or “essential.” Andin 2007, 62 percent wanted anoutdoor fireplace or fire pit, acategory that wasn’t even anoption in the 2004 survey. So gather your friends aroundthe fire pit, take an afternoon

siesta on your outdoor bed, getready for work with a refreshingbackyard shower, or, check out"http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/shows_dind/" \t "_blank"Indoors Out” on the DIYNetwork for more ideas on howto embrace the great outdoorswithout leaving your yard.
