Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (z”l) taught that during the High Holy Days, “Jews cry out of the depth of our disconcerted souls, a prayer for redemption.” We gather this year, our 28th as a Shir Tikvah community, with a new machzor (High Holy Day prayer book): Mishkan HaNefesh—A Sanctuary for the Soul. The machzor invites us to consider profound spiritual questions: What is our soul? Why must we do the hard work of cheshbon hanefesh—taking account of our souls—during these Days of Awe? How can we grow in relationship with God, with our community, and with the earth? Jewish tradition understands how challenging these questions can be; how vexing it can be to confront

Come join us for a new begining.the life of the soul, our mortality and our morality, our purpose here on this planet. This is heavy and holy work— and it can’t be done alone. This is why we welcome you to engage as part of our holy community together in joyful prayer, in crying out to God, in quiet contemplation, in fasting and in song. For each of us we pray. Pour out your souls in our holy community. We are enriched by one another’s presence. Together, we sing a beautiful and redemptive song of hope. Shanah Tovah U’m’tukah~The Sweetest of Years,

Luke Weisberg, President and Rabbi Michael Adam Latz

Jewish tradition calls this confrontation of the soul cheshbon hanefesh. It’s serious, deeply challenging soul work. But through it, we have the opportunity to turn our lives anew, towards greater compassion, dignity, fulfillment and love.

Jewish SparksMondays, 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Shir TikvahInside every Jew, the Rabbis teach, is a n’kudah tovah–a spark of holiness, goodness–a unique gift that no one else in the world has. The mystics explain that this is a spark of divine holiness. What are those sparks inside us that animate Jewish life? How can our Jewish traditions nourish our daily lives and work in the world?

This survey course is for those who want to know more about their Jewish heritage and those exploring conversion. Each ses-sion will have at-home reading to prepare in advance, so that when we meet we can go deeper into the topics and how they relate to our lives and world today. The course will unfold over four 7-session units, each of which will cover some of the foun-dations of Jewish literacy. The series may be taken together or individually. Taught by Rabbis Latz and Rappaport. Unit 1 SPARKS OF TIME & SOUL (Fall 2015) October 26, No-vember 2, 9, 16, 30, December 7, 14 Unit 2 SPARKS OF PEOPLEHOOD (Winter 2016) Feb 1, 8, 22, 29; March 7, 14, 21
