Why You Should Send Your Children to Jewish Camp
I write this from the “Motel Lounge” at URJ
Camp Coleman. I spent the past 9 days teach-
ing, sharing, and learning from kids of all ages.
As many of you know, I am a big believer in
the power of Jewish camping. Camp is a great
thing. It fosters a community where kids take care of one another
and reach out to others in a way that is very difficult to be recre-
ated in other places. There is also the resiliency that they learn
from being away from home for a few weeks. But then there is
something so very special from what I witness at Jewish camps:
the nurturing of a soul and the strengthening of an identity.
As a father, I love seeing the friendships that my daughters de-
velop with other girls and the fun that they have. As a rabbi, I
love seeing all of our kids be in a safe Jewish environment “24/7”
– a place where everything is Jewish, from the chadar ochel
(dining room) to the misrad (main office) to the blessings after
each meal (birkat hamazon) and the Jewish values that are a part
of Color War (Maccabiah games).
Imagine that for every Jewish experience we have, we get a to-
ken. The more tokens in a young person’s jar, the greater the
chances that he or she will grow into an engaged, connected Jew-
ish adult. That is what we want, isn’t it? If so then we need to
embark on a plan to engage more parents in the conversation
about the merits of Jewish camping and more dollars into our
scholarship funds so that this investment in a Jewish future isn’t
reserved for only for some.
I am often asked about why is this so important to me? Why do I
want our kids to go to camp?
If you were to witness what I see every summer, you would un-
derstand. Our kids learn how to pray at camp, not just learn the
words. The values that they learn are reinforced in their living
spaces. They meet Israelis, not simply through a talk or as a guest
soldier, but through ongoing meaningful connections to these
young people who serve as roles models and become friends.
With the pushes and pulls of our privileged society where being
Jewish is something that we like and appreciate but don’t get to
see it in action very often, our Jewish camp and summer pro-
grams are transformative experiences that nurture our kids souls.
So whether it is our Reform movement’s Camp Coleman, our
JCC’s Camp Barney, the Reform movement’s Mitzvah Corps
(where kids volunteer around the country doing good), Adamah
Adventures (an Atlanta-based wilderness adventure program), or
our leadership training camp at Kutz Camp in New York, with a
whole host of other opportunities, too… investing in our kids’
participation in Jewish summer programs is an investment in a
Jewish future. So whether it is our child or grandchild, our stu-
dent or member of the TBT community, sending our kids to have
one these experiences is a beautiful expression of our Jewish
commitment. The truth is, however, they don’t come cheap; not
at all! I am happy to guide you to the right camp for your child or
your family member, along with scholarship opportunities (sorry,
based on real need only).
For others who want to support our kids in TBT, consider sup-
porting our own Camp and Israel Scholarship Fund.
I know for me, attending Kutz Camp when I was 15 years old had
a dramatic impact on my life. It wouldn’t have happened without
the support of my Education Director and synagogue community
to invest in me when my mother didn’t have the resources her-
self. It has left an indelible impression on me and without exag-
geration, the experience changed my life for the better. I hope to
have as many as possible have that same experience.
For more about Jewish camping, visit the Foundation for Jewish
Camp at www.jewishcamp.org or to view my favorite summer
camp programs, visit http://bethtikvah.com/community/religious-
school and find my list under “Religious School Documents.”

News & Happenings from Temple Beth Tikvah
This month, many of us have children going back to school -- and next month, back to religious school here at TBT.
We have a vibrant, dynamic religious school where our children get to experience Jewish learning in a positive, sup-
portive environment on a weekly basis. But why should the learning be limited to the once a week when they meet
with their religious school class, or the even the academic years to which our religious school extends?
As our children prepare to resume religious school next month, consider the following. All learning, and especially Jewish learning
is a constant, collaborative process. When you pick your kids up from religious school each week, start a conversation then that ex-
tends throughout the week, exploring what they learned and how their Judaism informs their day-to-day life. With children (and
grandchildren, nieces and nephews!) at college and older, don’t be afraid to do the same: Don’t be afraid to be the one to put the
questions to them, to share with them your own thoughts or point of personal study, to bring celebrating Judaism through questioning
and learning and even teaching into their lives. There is an old Jewish proverb that goes, “As you teach, you learn.” True pedagogy
goes both ways -- our learning is that much richer when we take it outside of our own heads, and into the world -- and even more so
when we share that interaction and that tradition with our children.
As we start a new school year, let’s remember that the study of Judaism provides us with a life-long journey, and one not just limited
to children. Let’s engage each other, in small, casual ways, as we figure out what our Judaism means to each of us, personally, and
how we continue to create and build a community around it. And let’s all help one another in remembering that the study of Judaism
is best realized when it is multidimensional. It is often through immersion with a text and discussion around it that we learn a bit of
history of our people, a bit of thought of our tradition, and a bit of “why” we do what we do from a Jewish point of view. The study
and the learning hopefully translates into action -- into how we engage with our world as Jews and within a Jewish context. It is that
study and learning that will serve as a lantern for us in navigating the world, through our business dealings, through our social lives,
and as we hopefully actively pursue Tikkun Olam, those actions that work towards repairing our world.
Join a committee here at the synagogue to further our own TBT community. Help deliver a bag to a hospital so that one of our con-
gregants knows that their synagogue family is thinking of him or her. Make a commitment to study a bit, with Rabbi Greene, Rabbi
Tam or Cantor Kassel. Work on a Habitat House; participate in Relay for Life - Ruach Atlanta. And -- attend a Shabbat service to
see how the Parsha of the week might “speak to you.” And when you do these things, don’t do them alone: Bring your family, bring
your friends, bring your children. Train your Jewish mind to see the world through actions, and then explore their meaning by engag-
ing in them with your community. Let’s seek to find the learning in everyday life, and pass that mindfulness along to each next gen-
eration.
Shalom,
Steven C. Gerson, President
Cantor’s Convention 2012
In June I attended the annual convention of the American Conference of Cantor’s which emphasized the non-musical
parts of being a cantor. One featured speaker was Alan Morinis of Vancouver British Columbia, the Dean of The Mus-
sar Institute. What….. is Mussar?
Mussar is a path of contemplative practices and exercises that have evolved over the past thousand years to help an
individual soul to pinpoint and then to break through the barriers that surround and obstruct the flow of inner light in
our lives. Mussar is a treasury of techniques and understandings that offers immensely valuable guidance for the journey of our lives.
From its origins in the 10th century, Mussar was a practice of the solitary seeker, until in the 19th century it became the basis for a
popular social/spiritual movement originating in Lithuania, inspired by the leadership of Rabbi Israel Salanter.
I find truth in the words of our morning prayer, Elohai N’shamah, which says we were created by God with a pure soul. I also be-
lieve that we develop habits over the years that block or inhibit the truest expression of our souls. When this happens, everything we
do is diminished to some extent. To learn more about Mussar I encourage you to visit the website: http://www.mussarinstitute.org
HHD Choir Rehearsals begin Aug. 7
Tired of softly singing the High Holyday prayers from your seat in the congregation? Ready to belt it out a little without getting
strange looks from those sitting nearby?
Then – join our HHD Choir! Last year, following the High Holydays, the choir recorded our musical repertoire which will make
learning the music a BREEZE for anyone who would like to join us this year. Think it over, but don’t take too long. We rehearse on
Tuesday nights from 7:00 – 9:00 beginning Tuesday Aug. 7.
Contact me right away if you are interested at [email protected].

We are just over one month away from beginning the new religious school year. The first day of Sunday school will be September 9th. This summer has truly flown by and we have been very busy planning for the new school year. We have registered students, ordered books and classroom supplies, planned special activities and our teachers have worked on lesson planning along with other aspects of preparing for the beginning of school. We are all eager to see the students and begin an exciting new school year.
Registration forms for the 2012-2013 school year are still being submitted to the religious school office. We have about 85% of our previous students already registered. Thank you to those families who have sent your registration forms and tuition in thus far. Getting your forms in early helps us immensely in the planning process. If you have not sent your registration form and tuition to the office, please do so promptly. This is the only way we can make sure your child will be placed in his/her appropriate class.
Open House for Pre K – 3rd grade will take place on Sunday, September 23rd at 9:30 a.m. Open house for 4th – 7th grade will take place on Sunday, September 30th also at 9:30 a.m.
A note to our parents of post B’nai Mitzvah age children (8th through 12th), please remember to enroll your child in our Kesher, Confirmation and Kivunim programs. These programs are a continuation of your child’s Jewish education after their seventh grade year. The forms are available on our website (www.bethtikvah.com). Your post B’nai Mitzvah children are also eligible to become Madrichim (Teacher Aides) this year. If they are interested please call the religious school office at 770-642-4168 to discuss.
Have a wonderful and relaxing August. We are looking forward to seeing all of our student's smiling faces in Septem-ber.
Shalom
Hassia Levin

Early Childhood Education Center
The summer has come and gone and once again the halls of the Early Childhood Education Center are quiet…but only
for a moment!
Camp went off without a hitch, as our children participated in various activities, including Shabbat Sing, cooking and
arts and crafts. They also played and splashed during water play and even had a visit from the ice cream man!
I would like to thank Linda Siegel, Maria Schwartz, Erin Pollack, Rachel Wilson, Lisa Laudicina, Lauren Siegel, Abby Fried-
man, Jill Matthews, Adriane Cooper, Zoe Eberhardt, Rachel Laudicina, Marissa Laudicina, Allison Cohen and Olivia Gold-
stein for all of their time and help in making the summer a wonderful experience for all.
We are looking forward to a wonderful 2012-2013 school year which begins August 27.
If you or someone you know may be interested in our program, please contact me at 678-350-0076 for a tour.

TBT Community
What does a Chavurah do?
Each Chavurah decides on its own blend of socializing and
Jewish learning, through programs of study, observances of
holidays and festivals, socializing and sharing of simchas.
Members personalize and vitalize their Jewish experience
and participate together in synagogue life and community
concerns.
When does a Chavurah meet?
Each Chavurah usually meets once a month in the homes of
its members (or at other locatiosn), in rotation. With that
said, each Chavurah sets the frequency of meeting that
works best for that particular group. The group will decide
on the most convenient dates and times based on the sched-
ules of all its members. Sometimes meetings alternate adult
only and family events.
For additional information or to join a chavurah, please
contact Ivie Graiser at [email protected] or
770-641-0144. To begin the process, please complete an
application and forward it to TBT or Ivie.
College Outreach Committee
For parents who have either current college students and/
or rising freshman, we would like to make you aware of a
service offered by TBT. Temple Beth Tikvah would like to
stay in touch with your child while they are away from
home in college. They will receive a small care package
(each semester) so that they will know they are being
thought of. If you already know your student’s current
school mailing address, please send it to us now. Or, if you
will be finding out that information soon, please let us
know as soon as possible. There will be future reminders
as well. Please contact either Ginger Glazer at
[email protected] or Lynda Bennett at
[email protected] at your earliest convenience.

TBT 25th Anniversary Info
Get to Know Danny Maseng,
Our Special 25th Anniversary Guest
Born in Israel to American parents, Danny first came to the United States to star on Broadway in 'Only Fools Are Sad.' A playwright, actor, singer, writer and composer, Danny has served as Evaluator of New American Plays/Opera-Musical T heater for the National Endowment for the Arts. Danny is very proud to be the Chazzan and Music Director of Temple Israel of Hollywood. A leader in the field of informal Jewish education, Danny has been Director of Hava Nashira for the URJ, the Artis-tic Director of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute and the Director of The Spielberg Fellowships for the FJC. He is the Patron Artist of the Avraham Geiger School for Cantorial Arts in Berlin, the first post-Holocaust Cantorial school in Germany. Danny's critically acclaimed off-Broadway musical 'Wasting Time with Harry Davidowitz' The Musical Journey of a Jewish Soul, and the dynamic 'Soul on Fire' concert, are two exciting productions that have earned Danny accolades. A book about the luminaries of Israeli music is in the works, and Danny has recently completed his first novel 'Singularities.' One of the most popular and respected composers of contemporary liturgical and synagogue music, Danny has released a treasure trove of beautiful music. He has been the invited guest of the American Conference of Can-tors, the Cantor's Assembly, as well as the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Equally at home with pop and rock, Danny's CD 'Just Like Home' has been hailed "a love letter to a place and a faith called Israel" by Rolling Stone's contributing editor David Wild and his long awaited double CD, 'Heaven on Earth: Shabbat at Temple Is-rael of Hollywood ' is hot off the press and getting rave reviews! You may have seen Danny on shows like 'Law & Order' or heard him narrate' Wild Discovery' but his true love is teaching. He is a frequent faculty member of national and international institutes and conferences -- and deeply involved in interfaith dialogue. A much sought after scholar/artist-in-residence, Danny travels the world, inspiring, teaching and rekindling the love of Judaism through Torah, Kabbalah, Jewish Culture and the Arts.
DANNY MASENG ... AT A GLANCE
In Tulsa, OK -- the organizer sent a note: "Thank you for being in Tulsa to celebrate our 95th Anniver-sary! Your concert was over-the-top fabulous...everyone is still raving about your magical voice, your soulful presence and the inspiration of your selections. We know our community will be talking about
this weekend for a long, long time. You made it beautifully memorable." Paula and Malcom Milstein, Chairs
"Just thought you would enjoy knowing that Danny blew everyone away last night! It was the most heart
stopping, tear inducing, breath taking performance I have ever witnessed, let alone been honored to be a
part of. The diversity of material, depth of knowledge and breadth of ability was astounding. I speak for
more than just myself when I say that we were transported to a magnificent world last night. What an
exhilarating gift." GALA EVENT HONORING CANTOR ARLENE BERNSTEIN, Congregation Beth Israel SAN DIEGO,CA "

Women’s Spiritual Group Women of all ages and knowledge are welcome.
Sunday, August 19th, 7:00-8:30 pm in the little Oneg room.
Do you spend as much time on your spiritual self as you do on your physical self? This is your opportunity to renew and grow your spiritual self! We will explore the relevance of each Hebrew month, participate in activities that embody the monthly theme and discuss female figures that influence us; how they pertain to us and affect us in ways we don’t always recognize. Each meeting begins with optional gentle yoga/stretch/breathing to unwind. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. (If you have physical limitations, have no fear. You can participate sitting in a chair) What to bring - A candle in a container, a yoga mat if you have one. Don't have any of these? Come anyway!
Celebrate your feminine spirit and its link to the Hebrew calendar.
Reserve these dates: Sept. 23, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, Dec. 16, Jan. 20, Feb. 10, March 17, April 21 and May 19

Memorial Plaques
Memorial plaques are a beautiful way to
honor the memory of a loved one. Your
loved one’s plaque will be lit up several
times throughout the year.
We recite the Kaddish on the anniversary of
their passing and Yizkor, which means to re-
member, is recited as part of the prayer ser-
vice four times during the year.
With the High Holy Days approaching, we
want to make sure we receive your order in
time for your plaque to be placed on the wall
for Yizkor during Yom Kippur. The price of a
plaque is $300. If you have any questions or
would like to order a plaque, please contact
Lisa in the synagogue office at 770-642-0434
or send an email to [email protected].
All orders must be received by August 1st in
order to assure they arrive in time to be
placed on the memorial board by Yom Kippur.

On October 11, the Anti-Defamation League and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus will present Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin, a multi-media concert that tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during World War II who learned Verdi’s Requiem Mass by rote and then performed this compelling work 16 times.
The concert/drama features a full performance of the Requiem, video testimony with surviving members of the choir, original Nazi propaganda film footage, and actors telling the remarkable story of the Jewish prisoners who sang as a symbol of secret defiance against their Nazi captors. The performance is powerful, dramatic and inspirational, with a contemporary message of hope.
Click here for Defiant Requiem video & more!
Tickets are on sale NOW and can be purchased by calling the Woodruff
Arts Center box office at 404 733-5000 or on the Atlanta Symphony website at www.atlantasymphony.org. Use discount code ADL10 for a 10% discount on each ticket.
