Chairperson'sorner

Romeo A. De Jesus, CPA

Year 2019 – 4th year of our 5-Year Plan

As our tradition, we started our first day operation by celebrating a mass. It is our way of thanking our creator for all the blessings showered to us in 2018 as well as request for guidance in our operation for 2019. This is the 4th year of our 5-Year Plan which we developed wayback in 2015. From 2016 – 2018, we have surpassed our target and we hope for 2019 we’ll again attain all our projections especially on surplus, assets, liquidity, delinquency, institutional capital and return to equity.

In January, we also inaugurated our 5th Satellite Office located at Loma de Gato, Marilao. This will cater to our members who are residing in South Muzon as well as our members in the different Barangays of Marilao and North Caloocan.

31ST GENERAL ASSEMBLY

We held our 31st General Assembly last March 31, 2019. We are very much satisfied on the preparations made by the Election Committee as well as all officers and employees who helped in the preparations of the venue. Although we envisioned that there will be a problem in the Election Proper because of the increase in the number of member voters, we are very glad that no untoward problems occurred and the General Assembly runs smoothly. We thought that our venue cannot accommodate our members, but with the long hours provided in the election proper and the practice of some of our members to leave the place early as they live in far places, makes our venue still not fully occupied so that our discussions on various topics go on smoothly.

During the General Assembly Proper, two major issues were raised on the floor:

Why full time employees were prohibited from being a candidate in the Barangay Election?Cash advance of 50% from future Damay Impok Proceeds.

On the first issue, there was a policy on the conflict of interest which we must implement. Also, it is very hard to perform two important positions especially if you have to work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in one of your jobs. We have to select between office career and other profession.

On the second issue, our contributions to our Damay Impok program are only withdrawn upon death of a member. The advances made to those hospitalized or with medicine maintenance will come from the Coop General Fund. Raising the advances to 50% of the future Damayan proceeds will surely affect on the finances of the cooperative.

1st QuarterFeeding Program

By: Nancy P. Magno

Two days after the whole world celebrated “Hearts Day” or Valentine’s Day, February 16, 2019, San Jose Koop family, with some Members of the Board, Committee Members and some employees troop to Fr. Simpliciano Children’s Home, Inc. in Brgy. Graceville for the Quarterly Feeding Program. With the willingness To Serve and the heart that deeply cares for the children, we conducted the Feeding Program as part of San Jose Koop’s Community Development Project where members of San Jose Koop’s family acted as titos and titas to the children who were present.

We were greeted by the Home’s directress - Sr. Maria Febe L. Sineres, SFSC, who joined us, as each member of the San Jose Koop greeted the children and gave inspirational messages that I believe have inspired them a lot, considering that they were very responsive during the short program, I was truly moved by the smiles and short thanks of the children as we distribute the prepared snacks for them especially when some of them clings to us as their form of gratitude.

It was indeed a blessed day for each one of us, quoting Proverbs 22:9 “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.” May these children that have been fed felt that they are truly blessed and that they too in their own little way be able to share what they have and that it become a part of their lives, thus become a generous part of the society. May this undertaking of San Jose Koop continues so that the institution be blessed and continue to be a blessing to the community.

IF WE HOLD ON TOGETHER…

Maligayang pagbati sa San Jose Koop at sa mga bilyonaryong kasapi….TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER!

Month of February is National Dental Health Month. Every dentist all throughout the country celebrate this event. Every dental organization has their dental education, missions and other dental programs that can help Filipinos to be aware of the importance of oral health.

In San Jose Koop, as part of our Community Development Program, we held the Dental Awareness last March 2, 2019 at Barangay Loma de Gato, Marilao. The event was attended by some Barangay Officials of Loma de Gato and Officers & Employees of San Jose Koop. More or less 200 daycare students were educated of proper brushing and good oral hygiene by Dra. Cynthia Cabanza.

Hoping that this kind of project would help children to eliminate dental caries and maintain good oral health.

Grand Opening of San Jose Koop Health & Wellness Clinic

Grand Opening

It has been another historic event for San Jose Koop, last 30th day of January, 2019. The first ever satellite office along Marilao, Bulacan area was opened to everyone. This is a way to expand our services to nearby Cities and Municipalities from the place of our origin, my beloved City of San Jose del Monte. It all started with a thanksgiving mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Arvin Ray Jimenez of St. Joseph the Worker Parish Church. Present that day are the ever dependable Chairman of the Board, Mr. Romeo de Jesus and CEO, Ms. Caroline Dave, who both led the ribbon cutting ceremony to kick off the Grand Opening of San Jose Koop, Loma de Gato Satellite Office and followed by a tour to the newly renovated three (3) floors building.

Together with other members of the Board of Directors, committees, management, staff, and special guests, we shared some food while watching SANJO the Mascot, danced and invite people to be part of one of the most progressive Cooperative in Asia. And what was really amazing that day? Everyone is thrilled to become a member.

To wrap up our Grand Opening, we accepted transactions such as new accounts, deposits, loan applications, loan payments and all of it went pretty well. So, it was a great day as a whole. Hope this office serves as a tool to improve lives of every Marileños. A historic event, indeed.

FUNDAMENTALS OF COOPERATIVE SEMINAR

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I remember.- Benjamin Franklin

As the newest part of San Jose Koop family, newly hired employees were gathered to attend a two-day seminar held last February 2&9, 2019 at San Jose Koop Raiffeisen Hall, together with the other employees which was facilitated by Vice Chairman Richard Española Avena.

The motive of the seminar is to involve and to inform the employees on how a cooperative runs. Also, different activities were happened and participated by every attendees which was the primary objective is to give oneness in each group. There, we learned thoroughly how cooperative started, the success stories and the people behind it. Let me share you a short history of it.

Began in 1884, when the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers established the “Rochdale Pioneers” on which they ran their cooperative, that the basis for development and growth of the modern cooperative movement was established. Proving as well that thru honesty and cooperation of each members will brought success to a cooperative.

As time passes by, as cooperative are getting urbanized and innovated. Financially, cooperative banks, called credit unions in the United States, were invented in Germany in the mid 19th century. First by Franz Hermann Schulze Delitzsch (who formed the “First Bank”), then by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, the “Father of the Credit Union Movement”, whose also motivated by the desire to assist poor farmers on the grip of “loan sharks” or those we called bumbays/fivesix (5/6).

Meanwhile in the Philippines, at the turn of the century, Filipinos, in increasing number, traveled and studied abroad and brought home with them new ideas. It was the group of Filipinos who were in close in contact with the new economic movement in Europe. Two names worthy of note were Dr. Jose P. Rizal and Teodoro Sandiko.

When Rizal was arrested for treason and banished to Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. In Dapitan, Rizal had his ideas in cooperation partially fulfilled. Rizal put up a school for the poor community on a purely cooperative basis. He also established a cooperative store with the help of his pupils. One noteworthy group organized by Rizal was the La Sociedad de los Abacaleros (Society of Abaca Producers). This functioned only for one year. Rizal returned the members share capital with any loss.

Teodoro Sandiko, who traveled in Europe, who came across with the Raiffeisen movement in Germany, was very much impressed by this type of cooperative and he looked forward for an opportunity to have it introduced here in the Philippines. As the destiny might have its choice. Sandiko had his chance when he was appointed one of the early governors when civil government, under the Americans, was established.

In the span of time, history has told stories of success in the spirit of cooperation built with every member of one’s organization. There is no way to spur powerful advantage in such fields as an individual but to go along together. From then on, cooperatives have made its way and have continuously been reaching people regardless of its economic status beyond the reach of the basic demands and needs of every people. Just like Robert Owen says, “If you want something done, do it yourself”.
