While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, “All that you see here - the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.” Then they asked him, “Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?” He answered, “See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time has come.’ Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for

such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the

end.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky. Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense before hand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

Since the time when King Solomon built the first temple (c.986 B.C.), until the Babylonian conquest in 586 B.C., the Israelites believed in God’s promise of an eternal heritage to David, and saw the temple as a sym-bol of divine protection. Even some of the prophets had warned them about relying too much on an earthly temple (see Jeremiah 7:4). At the time of Jesus, Herod’s temple was also magnificent and the people put their trust in the solidity of its walls. In the popular mind, only the end of the world could destroy the temple. When Luke wrote his Gospel, around 85 A.D., his readers had wit-nessed the destruction of the temple by the Romans and knew that it was futile to place their hopes on a building. The words of Jesus as recorded here reminded the perse-cuted Christians that belief in Him would be the cause of disruption, and that those associated with His Name would suffer greatly. Luke was pointing to apocalyptic signs (wars, earthquakes, plagues) that had already been fulfilled.

Today’s reading offers three significant messages:

● The actual destruction of Jerusalem by Rome in A.D. 70, upon which Luke and his community look back, provides the assurance that, just as Jesus' prediction of Jerusalem's destruction was fulfilled, so too will be his announcement of their final redemption. ● In times of fear and war people become vulnerable to false prophets and fake messages. Luke uses the words of Jesus to remind the people of his time that the signs he mentions are observed in every age, but they are no help in determining the day or the hour. ● Jesus promises spiritual protection to all those who suffer in his Name.

Look with mercy, we pray thee, O Lord, on those of our sons and daughters who now serve in our Armed Forces, and who in obedience to their superiors have for our sakes placed themselves in harm’s way. Grant that those who request the protection of thy right hand may be overpowered by no adverse force, and may the invited defense of thy mighty power shield thy faithful sons and daughters. Watch over them, O Lord, and bring them back safely to those who love them. Grant courage and steadfast faith to them and to those who long for their return. Bring a quick and bloodless end to these conflicts and spare the lives of the innocent.

Grant no increase to the numbers of widows and orphans and relieve the privations of the bereaved and wounded, whether wounded in body or in soul. Restore peace in our day, O Lord, that thy truth may go forth unhindered, for Thou, O Lord, art the Prince of Peace and art ever-glorified with thine unoriginate Father and the all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary—Feast Day: November 21st


Mary’s presentation was celebrated in Jerusalem in the sixth century. A church was built there in honor of this mystery. The Eastern Church was more interested in the feast, but it does appear in the West in the 11th century. Although the feast at times disappeared from the calendar, in the 16th century it became a feast of the universal Church. As with Mary’s birth, we read of Mary’s presentation in the temple only in apocryphal literature. In what is recognized as an unhistorical account, the Protoevangelium of James tells us that Anna and Joachim offered Mary to God in the Temple when she was three years old. This was to carry out a promise made to God when Anna was still childless. Though it cannot be proven historically, Mary’s presentation has an important theological purpose. It continues the impact of the feasts of the Immaculate Conception and of the birth of Mary. It emphasizes that the holiness conferred on Mary from the beginning of her life on earth continued through her early childhood and beyond. It is sometimes difficult for modern Westerners to appreciate a feast like this. The Eastern Church, however, was quite open to this feast and even somewhat insistent about celebrating it. Even though the feast has no basis in history, it stresses an important truth about Mary: From the beginning of her life, she was dedicated to God. She herself became a greater temple than any made by hands. God came to dwell in her in a marvelous manner and sanctified her for her unique role in God's saving work. At the same time, the magnificence

of Mary enriches her children. They, too, are temples of God and sanctified in order that they might enjoy and share in God's saving work.

Purest Virgin, worthy of all praise, sanctuary dedicated to God and raised above all human condition, virgin soil, unplowed field, flourishing vine, fountain pouring out waters, virgin bearing a child, mother without knowing man, hidden treasure of innocence, ornament of sanctity, by your most acceptable prayers, strong with the authority of motherhood, to our Lord and God, Creator of all, your Son who was born of you without a father, steer the ship of the Church and bring it to a quietharbor" (adapted from a homily by St. Germanus on the Presentation of the Mother of God).

La Presentación De La Santísima Virgen María– 21 De Noviembre

Es en una antigua y piadosa tradición que encontramos los orígenes de esta fiesta mariana que surge en el escrito apócrifo llamado "Protoevangelio de Santiago". Este relato cuenta que cuando la Virgen María era muy niña sus padres San Joaquín y Santa Ana la llevaron al templo de Jerusalén y allá la dejaron por un tiempo, junto con otro grupo de niñas, para ser instruida muy cuidadosamente respecto a la religión y a todos los deberes para con Dios. Históricamente, el inicio de esta celebración fue la dedicación de la Iglesia de Santa María la Nueva en Jerusalén en el año 543. Estas fiestas se vienen conmemorando en Oriente desde el siglo VI, inclusive el emperador Miguel Comeno cuenta sobre esto en una Constitución de 1166.

Más adelante, en 1372, el canciller en la corte del Rey de Chipre, habiendo sido enviado a Aviñón, en calidad de embajador ante el Papa Gregorio XI, le contó la magnificencia con que en Grecia celebraban esta fiesta el 21 de noviembre. El Papa entonces la introdujo en Aviñón, y Sixto V la impuso a toda la Iglesia.

God Speaks Today/ Dios Habla Hoy

Evangelio de la Semana Lucas 21:5-19

Desde que el Rey Salomón construyó el primer templo (986 A.C.), hasta la conquista de Babilonia en 586 A.C., los israelitas creían en la promesa que Dios le había hecho a David de una descendencia eterna, y veían el templo como el símbolo de la protección divina. Incluso algunos de los profetas les habían advertido no confiar demasiado en un templo de piedras (vea Jeremías 7:4). En el tiempo de Jesús, el templo de Herodes era también magnífico, y el pueblo puso su confiana en la solidez de sus paredes. En la mentalidad popular, sólo el fin del mundo podría destruirlo. Cuando Lucas escribió su evangelio alrededor del año 85, sus lectores ya habían sido testigos de la destrucción del templo por los romanos y sabían que era vano poner sus esperanzas en un edificio. Lucas narra los signos apocalípticos (guerras, terremotos, plagas) que ya se habían cumplido. Cuando Jesús habló de la destrucción del Templo, los apóstoles pensaron en el fin de la historia. La respuesta de Jesús es clara: se acerca la tragedia que culminará con la destrucción de Jerusalén, pero ése no será el fin de la historia.

La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:

● En tiempos de guerra y temor, prestamos gran atención a los mensajes de los falsos profetas. Lucas nos recuerda que

estos signos han aparecido en cada época, pero que no indican ni el día ni la hora del regreso de Jesús. ● Jesús promete la protección espiritual a todos los que sufren en su Nombre. ● Las palabras de Jesús relatadas aquí les recordó a los cristianos perseguidos que creer en Él causaría divisiones, y

que los que creían en su Santo Nombre sufrirían mucho.

En aquel tiempo, algunos hacían notar a Jesús las hermosas piedras y los ricos adornos que habían sido regalados al Templo. Jesús dijo: “Llegará el tiempo en que de todo lo que ustedes admiran aquí no quedará piedra sobre piedra: todo será destruido”. Le preguntaron entonces: “Maestro, dinos cuándo sucederá eso. ¿Cuál será la señal de que va a suceder?” Jesús contestó:

“Tengan cuidado y no se dejen engañar, porque muchos vendrán en mi lugar, diciendo: ‘Yo soy el Salvador, ésta es la hora de Dios’. No lo sigan. Cuando oigan hablar de guerras y revoluciones no se asusten, porque primero tiene que pasar eso, pero el fin no vendrá enseguida”. Después

les dijo: “Se levantará una nación contra otra, y una raza contra otra. Habrá grandes terremotos, pestes y hambre en una y otra parte. Se verán también cosas espantosas y señales terribles en el cielo. Pero antes de eso, a ustedes los tomarán presos y los perseguirán, los entregarán a los tribunales judíos y los llevarán a las cárceles; los harán comparecer ante los reyes y gobernadores porque llevan mi nombre. Esta será para ustedes la oportunidad de dar testi-monio de mí. No se olviden entonces de lo que ahora les advierto, de no preparar su defensa. Porque yo mismo les daré palabras tan sabias que ninguno de sus opositores las podrá resistir o contradecir. Ustedes serán denunciados por sus padres, hermanos, parientes y amigos y algunos de ustedes serán ajusticiados a causa de mi nombre. Sin embargo, no se perderá ni uno de sus cabellos. Manténganse firmes, y se salvarán”.
