For distinguishing himself by meritoriousachievement while participating

in sustained aerial flight in support

of combat ground forces of theRepublic of Vietnam during the period

4 December 1966 to 13 January 1967 .During this time he actively participated

in aerial missions, totaling more thantwenty-five aerial missions over hostileterritory in support of counterinsurgencyoperations. During all of these missions

he displayed the highest order of airdiscipline and acted in accordance with

the best traditions of the service.By his determination to accomplish hismission in spite of the hazards inherent

in repeated aerial flights over hostileterritory and by his outstanding degree of

    professionalism and devotion to duty,

he has brought credit upon himself, his organization, and the military service.

    The

    AIR MEDAL

For heroism while participating in aerial flightevidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond

the call of duty: he distinguished himself byheroic actions on 26 December 1966 while

serving as gunner on a Fire Fly mission nearCan Guibe, Republic of Vietnam. The fire team

arrived at the area of a suspected Viet Cong rivercrossing and discovered numerous sampans.

The low ship immediately engaged these targets, with tremendous volumes of suppressive fire.At this time, the enemy ground fire was very

intense. It was his suppressing fire, given evento the extent of his hanging out of the aircraft to

the limits of his safety belt to shoot under theship, that enabled the aircraft commander toconcentrate on the sampans rather than the

enemy fire. During the entire action, his skill withhis M-60 machinegun and his determination

contributed to the destruction of 111 sampans, numerous secondary explosions, and the

destruction of a large quantity of Viet Cong rice.Because of his extreme aggressiveness, theViet Congs transportation system has been

seriously impaired, and the morale andeffectiveness of a vicious enemy has been dealta severe blow. His actions were in keeping with

the highest traditions of the military serviceand reflects great credit upon himself,

his unit and United States Army.
