Early project ideationExtensive tensile structure form-findingDesign/build of innovative textile envelopeFabrication of final presentation modelsProject construction at three seperate sites

Direct involvement with:

TECHSTYLE HAUS: SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE

PROJECT MANAGER OF PERMANENT CONSTRUCTION, SUMMER 2014Domaine de Boisbuchet, France

Managed a build team of 2-20 students over 10 weeks:

STUDENT ARCHITECT, SPRING 2013 - SUMMER 2014Providence, RI and Versailles, France

Determined short and long term build schedulesInterfaced with faculty, contractors, and clienteleLed a fluid design/build process, addressing construction issues as they arose

SLICECEO, CO-FOUNDER, PRODUCT DESIGN LEAD, 2012Pasadena, CA

Core architectural team member from project ideation through construction.

Design/installation of textile PV array (with professional contractor PvilionTM)Construction drawings including the wall assembly and PV array

Individually responsible for:

Received funding with a co-founder to develop and launch an iphone app through Idealab, a technology incubator:

Led a 3-4 person graphic design and engineering teamSpearheaded product evolutionDefined features and technical specificatoinsMade UX/UI design decisionsConducted qualitative market researchLaunched twice in the app store

Page 4: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

I have been a product designer and an architectand I consider myself within the strong overlap of the two. I am interested in designing and building things that “do”.

The following products/objects/buildings all perform. They narrate, fold, balance, compress, funnel, and suspend. They are solutions to problems of dramatically different scale.

The joy, though, is not in solving the problem each project presents;it is in envisioning the objectives that I want to satisfy as I solve it. These objectives transcend the problem that is readily apparent. They are highly personal and I should be uniquely capable of satisfying them. They are what lead to answers no one could have seen when they asked.

This is the responsibility that product designer and architect share, and it is what motivates me most.

I am interested in designing and building things that “do”, but that do differently, personally, with objectives that are entirely my own.

SLICE SELECTIVE SHARINGCEO, CO-FOUNDER, PRODUCT DESIGN LEADFALL 2012

We all have hundreds of friends too many, why share with everyone everytime? Slice lets you

SHARE THE RIGHT STUFF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE.

Page 7: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12
Page 8: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

SLICE was the final of three project iterations while in residence at Idealab, a technology incubator.

OUT / MICROSTORY / SLICE

Narrate and share the time you spend OUT. Turn on the app and let it go, then share your story with friends and watch your story intersect with theirs.

Page 9: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

OUT / MICROSTORY / SLICE

MICROSTORY packages the activity from a slice of your life into small stories perfect for sharing with friends on the go.

SLICE was the final of three project iterations while in residence at Idealab, a technology incubator.

FOUND OBJECT TRANSFORMDESIGN PRINCIPLES, RISD ARCHITECTUREFALL 2011

Fom two found objects, makeONE MATERIAL THAT TRANSFORMS

to fit the dimensions of a wine box.

Page 13: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

Rubber bands in tension and empty beer cans in compression form a single jointed sheet that is then folded into shape.

MASS BALANCEARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, RISD ARCHITECTUREFALL 2013

Excavate and replace half the mass from a 4’x4’x8” volume while MAINTAINING AN ECCENTRIC BALANCE POINT.

Page 17: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

The mass is divided into four quadrants around an eccentric balance point.

Opposing similar squares are balanced by excavating all else.

Staples and shims are embedded in the excavated mass to allow for easy replacement.

All excavated mass is replaced, notching into and hanging symetrically from the assembly.

TEXTILE SPANARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, RISD ARCHITECTUREFALL 2013

Using nylon and wire, span a 6’x3’ space. The assempbly shouldCOMPRESS AND EXPAND TO ACHIEVE THE SPAN.

Page 19: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

32 tailored fabric and wire modules are interwoven along mutual seams to form a truss bridge, capable of holding weight from above and compressing from both sides.

RESEARCH LAB LIGHTARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, RISD ARCHITECTUREFALL 2013

A research facility for the study of earth, air, and water built toGIVE LIGHT VOLUME AND GEOMETRY.

Page 23: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

Light is funneled, constrained, and given perceptible volume to organize spaces for work, research, public, or private uses. It is a legend for the spaces within.

Page 24: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

1. WORK ABOVE, RESEARCH BELOW / Ambient lit office spaces surround wells directing light to research space below2. LIGHT WELL STUDY / Volumes of light pass through the water research facility to public space below. A layered facade permits light into office spaces above while allowing only direct light into research spaces below.

The world’s first SOLAR POWERED, TENSILE FABRIC PERMANENT RESIDENCE

designed to meet the Passive House energy standard.

PROJECT MANAGER OF PERMANENT INSTALLATIONSUMMER 2014

Page 31: Sam Zeif Portfolio Draft, 4.12

Techstyle Haus was Brown University, RISD and Fachhochschule Erfuhrt’s entry into the 2014 Solar Decathlon Europe international architecture competition.

The project was managed, designed, and built by a team of students in Providence, Versailles, and at its permanent location at the Domaine de Boisbuchet in central France.
