This is one of Dali’s paintings.

“Basket of Bread”

This was painted in 1926 and shows

the great technical skill that Dali

had.

Begun while Dali was in art school in

Madrid, “Basket of Bread” was

one of the last works Dali created

before moving to Paris to join the

surrealist movement.

‘Persistence of

Memory”

1931

This is Dali’s most famous

surrealist painting.

Some people say that

it is meant to create a

discussion on the

relative

unimportance of

time.

Dali said it was inspired

by a Camembert

cheese melting in the

sun.

Dalí was highly imaginative, and also

enjoyed indulging in unusual and

grandiose behavior. His eccentric

manner and attention-grabbing public

actions sometimes drew more

attention than his artwork, to the

dismay of those who held his work in

high esteem, and to the irritation of

his critics.

He became famous for dressing in a cape

and carrying a walking stick while

maintaining his luxuriously waxed

moustache.

Do you think his crazy behavior made

people like his paintings more? Or

less?

As a surrealist Dali was part of a

group of experimental and

daring artists who pushed the

boundaries of society. They

lived art by dressing and acting

in ways that made others

uncomfortable or angry.

Can you think of any modern day

performance artists?

In 1948 Salvador Dali painted

“The Elephants”

This is an example of phantom

reality. The spindly legs on

the elephants contrast the

idea of weightlessness with

structure.

Does this painting make you

feel differently about

elephants?

Lighter? Happier?

Do the long fragile legs make

this a more interesting

painting than if the legs

were normal?

• Our lesson today will be to create

Dali’s surreal elephants.

• We will follow the step by step

guide to draw the elephants head

and body.

• Next we will add long ,long, long

legs.

• Don’t forget a horizon line and

shadows.

• Outline the image with oil pastels

and fill in the white areas with

watercolor paints.

• If you have time you can add

fabric details on the elephants

back and head.
