Emmanuel College’s Assistant Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Bryan Mahoney raced to a win in the 24th Annual

BayState Marathon on Sunday morning. The second year Assistant Coach for the Saints bested the field of nearly 1,200

runners with an amazing time of 2:35.29, finishing with his closest competitor more than two minutes behind him.

Mahoney ran at a pace of 5:57 per mile over the 26.2 mile trek. With the weather on his side on a perfect autumn morning, the 29-year old hit his goal time for the race on the money. “I wanted to run 2:35, which is just under six-minute miles. My goal was never to win, but just to hit my goal.” It just so happened that 2:35 was more than two minutes good enough for a win and Mahoney is now in a remarkably elite field of “people who have won a marathon.”

Even with the recent rise in the popularity of marathon running, the percent of the U.S. population to run 26.2 miles is only 0.5%. With approximately 570 U.S. marathons held annually, the percentage of the population who have actually WON one of these grueling races is minuscule. Amazingly, Mahoney is now one of the very few.

One would think that in order to achieve such an incredible result, an individual could spend their lifetime training with multiple marathons recorded before even coming close to a win. Not true in this case. Incredibly, Mahoney had run just two prior marathons, before winning the BayState this weekend.

“I ran Boston back in 2004, but that was really just to do it, because its such a great experience. I didn’t really ‘race’ it. My first competitive marathon was last year in New York.” Mahoney ran the New York City

Marathon in 2011, finishing in 2:43. With just two marathons under his belt and only one raced competitively, some might even consider Mahoney a marathon rookie…that is before he won on Sunday.

But, how does something like this happen? “It is pretty crazy,” he laughed. “Two and a half, maybe three years ago, I wasn’t even running that much.”

Although his marathon experience is limited, Mahoney’s running background is impressive. A native of Milton, Mass., Mahoney ran cross country and track & field for Milton High School as a senior, choosing to focus on soccer for his first three high school years. Mahoney attended Fairfield University and ran cross country for the Division I Stags all four years. After just one year of high school experience, Mahoney was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Year and a three-time team MVP. Amazingly, he ran 33 total races during his collegiate career at Fairfield and won 28 of them. Of the five that he didn’t win, Mahoney finished in 2nd place all five times.

74 By the Numbers – Sophomore golfer Brett Burman (Bridgewater, Conn.) shot the lowest 18-hole round in program history, carding a 74 on october 8 at gorham Country Club in the university of Southern maine Fall Classic, helping the Saints shoot a single-day low of 314 en route to an eighth place finish.

Yun-Ting LeeWomen’s Volleyball

After becoming Emmanuel’s all-time leader in digs, senior Yun-Ting Lee was named the Great Northeast Athletic

Conference Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the Week of Oct. 1. Lee’s recognition came after the

senior captain recorded 27 digs to lead the Saints to a 3-2 win over Eastern Nazarene College. Lee’s match-high dig tally

put her over the four-year career mark for digs set by Jenna Ross (‘12) just last season.

Lee, the 2011 GNAC Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Year, finished her career with 1,814 digs making her

Emmanuel’s all-time leader in the category for both the men’s and women’s volleyball programs.

Brett BurmanMen’s Golf

Emmanuel College sophomore Brett Burman was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men’s Golf

Rookie of the Week twice in the month of October. Burman led the Saints to a two-day low total of 636 at the University

of Southern Maine Fall Classic over the Columbus Day weekend. Burman carded an 82 on the opening day and a three-

over-par 74 on day two to lead the Saints with a two-day low of 156.

Earlier in the month, Burman carded the Saints’ low round at the Elms Blazer Invitational played at Westover Golf Course

in Granby, Mass. The sophomore shot an incredible one-under par 35 on the front nine and finished the round with a 78,

placing sixth overall in the 80-player field.

Jessica D’OttavioWomen’s Soccer

For the second time during her senior season, women’s soccer goalkeeper Jessica D’Ottavio was named the Great

Northeast Atheltic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for her play during the week of October 22-28. D’Ottavio was

brilliant in the Saints’ 2-1 victory over Emerson College, making seven saves to help Emmanuel advance to the GNAC

Semifinals for the first time since 2009.

The win was also the 40th career victory for D’Ottavio, an Emmanuel program-record. She will also graduate with the

record for career shutouts, minutes played and currently ranks second all-time in saves with 415, 19 shy of the program

record.

Women’s Soccer back inGNAC SemifinalsFor the eighth time in program history the Women’s Soccer team advanced to the great Northeast Athletic Conference Semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Emerson College in the Quarterfinals on 10/28.

Women’s Tennis Floods All-GNAC Teams

the great Northeast Athletic Conference (gNAC) announced the 2012 Women’s All-Conference teams and Emmanuel student-athletes made a strong showing on teams. the Saints were well-represented, with Emmanuel players accounting for four of the sixteen All-Conference honorees.

Sophomore Alex Hadlock (Framingham, mass.) was a 1st team All-Conference selection, while Juniors Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) and Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.), as well as sophomore Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, me.) were named to the 2nd team All-gNAC.

Fall 2012 Seasons in Review

The 2012 Women’s Cross Country team placed fourth overall at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship held at Rivier University in Nashua, N.H. on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Women’s Soccer

After compiling a 12-5-1 regular

season mark including an 8-3-1

GNAC record, the Women’s Soccer

team earned a trip back to the GNAC

playoffs as the No. 3 seed. The Saints

are led by junior forward Lindsey

Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) who leads the

GNAC in assists with 10 to go along

with a team-best 10 goals. The Saints

missed last year’s post-season but

will look to return to the GNAC Finals

for the first time since 2009.

Men’s Soccer

The Saints were unable to make a

repeat performance of the 2011 run

at a GNAC title as the Men’s Soccer

team finish just outside the top eight

teams that qualify for tournament

play with a 3-7 GNAC slate and a

4-12-2 overall mark. Senior forward

Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) will

graduate ranking second all-time in

program history in goals (26), assists

(10) and total points (62).

Women’s Cross Country

After a strong regular-season,

the Women’s Cross Country team

placed fourth overall in the GNAC

Championship meet. Emmanuel

was led by junior Amy DeNuzzio

(Windham, N.H.), who ran her best

race of the season. DeNuzzio ran

1st for the Saints and 13th overall

in a time of 21:18. Senior captain

Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.)

finished 2nd for the Saints and 14th

overall with her time of 21:27. Junior

Danielle Martin (York, Me.) followed

DelSignore with her 16th place finish

and time of 21:34. Classmate Molly

Metivier (Keene, N.H.) scored fourth

Andy YosinoffWomen’s Basketball Coach

After leading the 2011-12

women’s basketball team

to the Elite Eight, Yosinoff’s

Saints have been ranked

No. 19 in the country in the

D3hoops.com pre-season

poll.

Yosinoff, who was named to the 2012 Red Auerbach Coach of the Year

by the Jewish Coaches Association returns 10 members from his 2011-

12 roster and will look to guide the Saints to their seventh consecutive

Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship. Entering his 36th

year at the helm, the longtime Saint will look to also notch his 700th

career victory during the 2012-13 campaign as he enters just 14 wins

shy of reaching the milestone.

Men’s Cross Country

With high hopes of the program’s

first-ever GNAC title, the Emmanuel

men were nipped by a strong

showing by Norwich. Following

Nate Bruno’s 9th place run in

27:30, the Saints finished in a pack,

scoring in spots 12-15. Juniors Pat

Callan (Pawling, N.Y.) and Michael

Morris took 12th and 13th place,

respectively, with their times of

27:34 and 27:59. Sophomore Brian

Collins (Hull, Mass.) had a great

performance, scoring in his first race

of the season for the Saints. Collins

finished 14th with his personal

record time of 28:01. Senior captain

Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.)

finished 5th for the Saints and 15th

overall with his time of 28:02.

Women’s Volleyball

The 2012 squad closed out the

regular season strong, winning seven

of its final 10 matches to secure the

No. 5 seed in the GNAC playoffs.

Overall, the Saints capped the year

with a 14-18 record including an

8-4 conference mark. Head Coach

Denitra Seals finished the season just

two wins shy of collecting her 100th

career coaching victory.

Men’s Golf

The Saints wrapped up the most

successful season in program history

firing a two-day total of 702 in the

GNAC Championship for a 7th place

finish. During the campaign the

program saw a new individual low

round of 74 as well as a new single-

day low total of 314 shot on Oct. 8 at

the USM Fall Classic. The Saints will

return all but one member from this

year’s roster in 2013.

Women’s Tennis

For the second year in a row, the

Women’s Tennis team advanced to

the GNAC Semifinals only to fall to

Emerson College. The Saints posted

an overall record of 11-7 on the year

including a 6-2 GNAC slate. Four

back in April of this year. “I used an 18-week training plan, but with a solid six months of work leading up to it.” The training program he used included a long run of between 17-22 miles every two weeks. Mahoney capped his mileage during the training at 65 miles per week.

“I learned a lot about myself after running New York,” a race in which he ran at a 6:08 pace, before falling off pace toward the end. This time around, Mahoney benefitted from the advice of Saints Head Coach Tony DaRocha. “I’ve never been around a coach that is as smart as he is when it comes to preparing for a race,” said Mahoney. “Tony had me focus on a lot more strengthening, flexibility and speed workouts this time around and it really helped. He has really helped me develop as a runner.” Coach DaRocha has always used his individualized training philosophy with the Saints too. “It doesn’t matter if you’re the first runner or towards the back of the pack, this is his approach with everyone, and its been a great experience learning from him.”

Although the BayState Marathon is historically one of New England’s faster marathons, Mahoney’s time was extremely impressive. To put it in perspective, Mahoney finished just 14 minutes off the course record of 2:21.36.

Unlike the Surftown Half Marathon, which Mahoney won on September 16th, he was not out in front in the BayState from the starting gun. “I ran in a pack of about 6-7 for the first eight miles, but one guy was way out in front of us from the start.” In preparation for the race, Mahoney had asked his father, who was watching from the halfway point, to let him know how far out in front the leader was, when he passed. “When I passed my dad at thirteen, he called out to me that the leader was about a minute ahead. At that point, the pack was down to three guys and we caught the leader at mile 14.”

By mile 17, the pack had dwindled to just two leaders, one of which was Mahoney. When his co-leader “made a move between 17 and 18,

I let him go, but I only let him get about 7-10 seconds ahead of me. Then I overtook him at mile 19.”

Mahoney may have even had some indirect advice from DaRocha while he was running the race. Ruben Sanca, who DaRocha previously coached in high school, jumped in to run in the lead pack to help pace a friend of his from miles 4-17. Sanca, who ran the 5,000 meters for Cape Verde in the London Olympics this summer, paced the lead pack for approximately 13 miles. Mahoney admitted that he ran a little faster at Sanca’s pace, but it was certainly beneficial in the end.

The support for Mahoney along the course was also inspiring. His parents and sisters saw him at miles 2, 13 and the finish. Mahoney also got a boost at mile 24, when one of his college teammates jumped in to run with him for a bit.

Mahoney was in good spirits the day following the race. ”I’m really not that sore this time around.” He was also happy about his winnings. For his first place finish in the BayState, Mahoney collected a check for $400.00. Over the Columbus Day weekend, he raced and won a local 10k event, taking home $500.00. With his combined winnings, Mahoney and his twin sister, Megan, are heading to London to celebrate their 30th birthdays. “I won the cost of the flight,” Mahoney joked.

With wins in his last three races, what’s up next for Mahoney? “I’m tentatively looking at Boston in 2014. I would like to try to get under 2:30, which will be challenging given Boston being a tougher course.”

Mahoney may continue to challenge himself with future marathons and half marathons, but he has certainly already made a lasting memory for himself. “I’m really happy that I hit my time and its great that I won. Its certainly nice that everything fell into place. It feels pretty good. I know I will remember both for the rest of my life.”

Emmanuel College Assistant Athletic Director and Head Athletic Trainer Ron Laham was recently certified in what is

considered one of the newer cutting edge techniques in the sports medicine field. Laham participated in an Active Release

Techniques (ART) training and certification program held at Fenway Park.

Laham, along with Athletic Trainers from Holy Cross and the Red Sox sports

medicine team, was one of 12 who took part in the four-day lower extremity

ART certification program.

ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue movement-based massage

technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and

nerves. Active Release Techniques are used for soft tissue injuries, including

typical overuse injuries such as tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and shin splints.

ART is similar to massage therapy, but done over a shorter treatment program.

Athletes should see results from ART in 3-4 weeks.

ART is a forward-thinking model, which is not found in many Division III

athletic training rooms, as its certification programs are both infrequent and

expensive. Laham is fortunate to have been certified and has already used ART

on several Emmanuel College student-athletes.

DaRocha Named GNAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year

For the second consecutive year, Tony DaRocha has been honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference as a Coach

of the Year, it was announced by the conference at the GNAC Championships held on the campus of Rivier University

in Nashua, N.H. on Saturday, October 27, 2012. DaRocha helped guide the Saints to a second place showing in the

championship while helping mentor many runners to personal best times throughout the season.

This marks the fifth time in DaRocha’s career that he has been honored by the GNAC as Coach of the Year. Tony has also

been honored as the Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2011 while this is the third time he’s been

tabbed the top male coach as he also earned the recognition in 2008 and 2010.

Roecker and Campagna to Serve as NCAA Regional Representatives

Emmanuel College Director of Athletics, Pam Roecker, has been asked to serve as the 2012-13 Great Northeast Athletic

Conference representative on the NCAA Regional Sports Chair for Women’s Basketball by GNAC Commissioner Joe Walsh.

Roecker is not the only full-time staff member that will serve as a NCAA Regional Rep as Dan Campagna, Assistant Sports

Information Director and 2007 Emmanuel graduate, has been asked by Walsh to serve as the 2012-13 Men’s Golf Sports

Chair.
