Wayne’s World

Dear Friends, My name is Fr. Matt Spotts and I’m a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). I was ordained a priest a little over a month ago and for my first assignment, my provincial superior made me available to serve at the parish community of Saints Joseph and Francis Xavier. I’m delighted to have a chance to be a part of this community! While I’m lucky enough to begin my priestly ministry here in Wilmette, Jesuit formation is long, and it’s been an eleven year journey in the Jesuits to bring me here. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and entered the Jesuits after completing my undergraduate studies at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. During my formation, studies have led me to degree work in 16th century European history at Saint Louis University and, most recently, theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. However, when I think about formation in the Society of Jesus, more than anything it’s the people of God who have formed me along the way. Jesuit formation tends to be full of variety, and stops along the way have taken me to work in a day center for men experiencing homelessness in Washington D.C., to direct eight day silent retreats on Long Island, to language and cultural immersions in Lima, Peru and Guadalajara, Mexico, and to two small parishes in the Wounded Knee district of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Two of my recent missions have been particularly influential on my development. First, from 2013-2016, I spent three very happy years at a Jesuit school in Indiana where I was a teacher of history and religion as well as a debate and track coach. As teacher and coach, God invited me to see each student, athlete, and debater as the imago Dei, the image of God and to help each student keep growing into the holy person God was calling them to be. The second mission that influenced me most recently has been my work for the last two and a half years in the Catholic chaplaincy at San Quentin State Prison in California. There, I worked in our chaplaincy which served both the “mainline” prisoners who were mostly serving long sentences as well as the death row prisoners, who accessed services in their own part of the prison. My “professors in blue,” as the Catholic chaplain at San Quentin called them, taught me more than I could possibly relate about the mercy of God, the slow work of grace, the power of God to bring healing even in some of the darkest situations imaginable. In ways big and small, the men showed the incredible

dignity of the human person, that no matter what lay in the past they could take strides toward holiness and live their call to discipleship even in difficult circumstances. Their efforts to create beautiful worship and support one another in prayer and their lives together taught me again and again just how powerful God’s work can be when God’s faithful people gather together in community. The key to all these experiences for me is simple: wherever I go, I arrive to find that God is already at work. My job as a Jesuit, and now as a priest, is to listen, to hear the Spirit, and to cooperate with what God and God’s people are already doing together. God’s blessings, Fr. Matt Spotts, S.J.

Speaking of Liturgy

July 14: 15th Sunday Ordinary Time

In Luke’s gospel, Jesus uses the well known “Good Samaritan” response to the legal scholar’s questions and urges us to extend God’s boundless mercy to everyone!

This form of hospitality is not welcoming people into our home, rather urging us to welcome everyone as they actually belong here in church and have a voice here.

Participation in Eucharistic liturgy is the sacred action of offering and of eating and drinking…the sacred actions that we can hope that will effect us and those we are welcoming with love that the Lord is offering through our efforts.

Important information regarding communion visits and pastoral care of the sick for the homebound and hospitalized. Please read carefully.

Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at Ss. Joseph and Francis Xavier. To insure that you received the desired spiritual care if you are hospitalized or homebound with illness, please assist us by providing us with the following.

Hospital: If you would like anointing prior to a scheduled surgery, please call the parish office to schedule an anointing with a priest. You may also receive anointing at the hospital when there is an emergency. When you are admitted to the hospital it is critical that you or a loved one identifies your religious affiliation, your parish name and your desire for pastoral care and communion visits. The patient may also call the Ministry of Care line to request communion at the hospital. A Minister of Care will make sure the hospital is informed of this request. Homebound: Trained Ministers of Care are available to bring communion to our parish sick and homebound. Ministers also visit local assisted living and nursing care homes. To schedule a visit, please call the Ministry of Care line at: 847 256-2273 press 0 and a Minister of Care will return your call.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is dedicated to helping the poor and others who have come upon difficult times. As Vincentians, we serve those in need through one-on-one counseling, as well as providing financial and other help to those who have fallen on hard times. If you or someone you know wishes to meet with us, please contact the parish office at 847-256-4250 and ask for extension 44 and leave a short message. We will respond as soon as possible. All inquiries will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
