  • MAY 5 EPISTLE READING Acts of the Apostles 5:12-20 In those days, many signs and

wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apos-tles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multi-tudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of

them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusa-lem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apos-tles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life."

GOSPEL READING John 20:19-31 On the evening of that day,

the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disci-ples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Fa-ther has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are re-tained."Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So

Apolytikion for Saints Con-stantine & Helen, Equal-to-the Apostles in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone

Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Thine apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us al-ways in peace, by the interces-sions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man.

  • the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet be-lieve."Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disci-ples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Pascha in the Plagal First Mode Christ is risen from the dead,

by death, trampling down upon death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life.

Apolytikion for Thomas Sun. in the Grave Mode

Whilst the tomb was sealed, Thou, O Life, didst shine forth from the grave, O Christ God; and whilst the doors were shut, Thou didst come unto Thy disciples, O Resurrection of all, renewing through them an upright Spirit in us according to Thy great mercy.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Mode

Though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to the myrrh-bearing women, "Hail!" and grant-ing peace to Your disciples, You who raise up the fallen.

MAY 12 EPISTLE READING Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7 In those days, when the disci-

ples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their wid-ows were neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve sum-moned the body of the disciples and said, "it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote our-selves to prayer and to the minis-try of the word." And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochoros, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Par-menas, and Nicolaos, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

    GOSPEL READING Mark 15:43-47; 16:1-8

At that time, Joseph of Arima-thea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Naza-reth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told

you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

by death, trampling down upon death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life.

Apolytikion for Holy Myrrhbear-ers Sunday in the Second Mode

When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, all the powers in the Heavens cried out: O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

    C ,  C    C  N  PHILOPTOCHOS First and foremost our

most sincere thanks to our hard-working members who made and baked our tradi-tional Easter Tsourekia. It takes a good deal of work and much dedication to Philopto-chos and to the Church to give so much of one's time in doing the Lord's work.

We are equally grateful to our great chefs who prepared and served the Palm Sunday Luncheon. As usual, a deli-cious meal was enjoyed by all present and everyone enjoyed great Christian fellowship with family and friends. Well done, ladies.

And, of course, our undying gratitude to our patrons with-out whom our fund-raising efforts would not be success-ful.

On Holy Friday, Philopto-chos will pass a tray. Please, be willing to help pass the tray if asked to do so.

Ladies, do keep in mind that on Sunday, May 19, our Community will hold its Awards Program. At that time, Philoptochos will award two scholarships to a pair of deserving you people of our Community. Please, do at-tend this function and witness the awarding of our scholar-ships to these young recipi-ents.

As we indicated a number of times, our AOK is an ongo-ing project, so we welcome anyone who is willing to help with this project. If you are interested in participating in this most worth-while project, do contact Ellie Costulis, (H) 833-8181, (C) 303-3030 and let her know that you want to help.

We are about to elect new officers for the next two-year term. Please, be willing to accept an office if asked to do

so. Elections will be held at our May meeting - Monday, May 6.

Our obligations to the NA-TIONAL for the month of May are: A contribution to the 75th Anniversary Founders Fund which provides assis-tance to Greek Orthodox older adults and their families, con-tinuing care facilities and spe-cial projects, and a contribu-tion to the Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) which pro-vides Orthodox Christian sup-port to college students on campuses in the U.S.

Our May meeting is Mon-day, May 6, 6:30 pm with re-freshments starting at 6:30. Please, make every effort to attend.

ORDER OF AHEPA The AHEPA Family, the Wood-

row Wilson Chapter 241 of the Order of AHEPA and the CHARIS ELENI Chapter 337 of the Daugh-ters of Penelope, once again will host the Community Awards Luncheon on May 19, 2019. All church affiliated organizations are welcome to participate in the presentation of scholarships and special awards.

The AHEPA Agora continues to offer a variety of delicious Greek products. Please stop by after Sunday services at the Ahepa Family Center and purchase your desired items.

HELLENIC WOMAN’S PENELOPE SOCIETY The May meeting of the

Hellenic Woman’s Penelope Society (HWPS) will not take place. The June meeting will be held on Thursday, June 13th at the Hellenic Center, beginning at 6: 00 p.m. It will be a souvlaki dinner meeting, compliments of HWPS, during which our new officers will be installed and new members will be initiated. In addition, we will honor this year’s recip-ient of the Father Peter and

    Gregory Makris Merit Scholar-ship.

Our Spring Bake Sale was very successful, and we thank all those members and friends who worked diligently to make our delicious pas-tries. We also thank our faith-ful patrons who amazingly support us each time. All pro-ceeds from the bake sale went to fund the Father Peter and Gregory Makris Memorial Merit Scholarship.

During the Spring Festival, we will be conducting tours of the Biblical Garden. Marika Anthony will serve as the tour guide. Those who visit the garden each year are ex-tremely impressed with its beauty and spirituality. We invite our parishioners and our young people to visit the Garden during the year.

It is with great joy that we learned that our member,

Violet Samaan, recently be-came an American citizen. We extend to Violet our con-gratulations and best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors. We are very proud of you, Violet!

We pray for the speedy recovery of our members, Tessie Dakis, who is recuper-ating at home from an injury, and Maggie Thompson, who was recently hospitalized. May the Lord be with both of you always.

We extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Violet Samaan on the loss of her mother, and to the families of George Zambas and Alex Pas-quier, who both passed away recently. May their memories be eternal.

    HAPPY SPRING FESTIVAL TO ALL!

MAY 19 EPISTLE READING Acts of the Apostles 9:32-42 In those days, as Peter went

here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints that lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. Now there was at Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she fell sick and died; and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him en-treating him, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and went with them. And when he had come, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping, and show-ing tunics and other garments which Dorcas made while she was with them. But Peter put them all outside and knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, rise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. Then calling the saints and widows he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

    GOSPEL READING John 5:1-15

At that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jeru-salem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda which has five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain sea-sons into the pool, and troubled the water; whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked. Now that day was the sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet." But he answered them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and walk.' "They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?" Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had with-drawn, as there was a crowd in

the place. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you." The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

Though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to the myrrh-bearing women, "Hail!" and grant-ing peace to Your disciples, You who raise up the fallen.

MAY 26 EPISTLE READING Acts of the Apostles 11:19-30 In those days, those apostles

who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoe-

nicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none ex-cept Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyre-ne, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, preach-ing the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barna-bas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians. Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabos stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius. And the disciples deter-mined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the breth-ren who lived in Judea, and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode
