How ungrateful we sometimes are to our fellowman. It often happens that a friend, a teacher, a surgeon, does something for us which is impos- sible to repay but the tragedy is that we often do not even try to repay it. How ungrateful we sometimes are to God. In some cases of bitter need, we pray with des- perate intensity. “Gratitude is from the same root word as “grace” which signifies the free and boundless mercy of God.

Thanksgiving is from the same root word as “think” so that to think is to thank.”

This quote by Willis P. King fits so well to the underlining message of the Gospel reading for the 12TH Sunday of Luke. The ten lepers were outcasts by society, for those ten sick men were not even permitted to approach people or enter the villages because of their illness. Upon seeing Jesus, they called upon Him for mer-cy, for they wanted to get well, which should not be too difficult for any of us to compre-hend. For as we know, whoever is sick longs to be cured of his or her illness.

After they were cleansed, we can all see what kind of men they really were. Out of the ten men, only one went back to Jesus and thanked Him, and he was a Sa-maritan. We know that Jews and Sa-maritans were what we could de-scribe as the “Hatfields and the McCoys”. They did not like each oth-er, and we know that the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans.

No story in all the Gospels shows

man’s ingratitude so clearly than this Gospel reading. The lepers came to Jesus with a desperate need for care; He cured them; and nine never came back to give thanks. So, too often, once we get what we want, we never go back.

How ungrateful we sometimes are to our fellowman. It often happens that a friend, a teacher, a surgeon, does something for us which is impos-sible to repay but the tragedy is that we often do not even try to repay it.

How ungrateful we sometimes are to God. In some cases of bitter need, we pray with des-perate intensity. How often people pray so that a family member or friend can be cured from an illness in a hos-pital chapel, but the rest of the year they do not even know the location of their Orthodox Church. Prayer, my dear brothers and sis-

ters, is not seasonal. God gave His only Son and often we

never give to Him even a word of thanks. God’s blessings are all too easily taken for granted or forgotten. The best thanks we can given Him is to try to deserve His goodness and His mercy a little better.

    Amen.

'Excesses meet.' Too much fast-ing and too much eating come to the same end. Keeping too long a vigil brings the same disas-trous cost as ... sluggishness... Too much self-denial brings weakness and induces the same condition as carelessness. Often I have seen men who would not be snared by gluttony fall, never-theless, through immoderate fasting and tumble in weakness into the very urge which they had overcome. Unmeasured vigils and foolish denial of rest over-came those whom sleep could not overcome. Therefore, 'fortified to right and to left in the armor of justice,' as the apostle

Apolytikion for Saints Con-stantine & Helen, Equal-to-the Apostles in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone

Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Thine apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us al-ways in peace, by the interces-sions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man.

  • says (2 Cor. 6:7), life must be lived with due measure and, with discernment for a guide, the road must be traveled between the two kinds of excess so that in the end we may not allow ourselves to be diverted from the pathway of restraint which has been laid down for us nor fall through dan-gerous carelessness into the urgings of gluttony and self-indulgence. St. John Cassian, Conferences, Conference Two: On Discernment no. 16; Paulist Press pg. 76, 5th century

HYMNS OF THE DAY Resurrectional Apolytikion in

the Third Mode Let the Heavens rejoice; let

earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He deliv-ered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Presentation in the First Mode

Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, O Virgin Theotokos, for from thee hath risen the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, enlightening those in darkness. Rejoice, thou also, O righteous Elder, as thou receivest in thine arms the Redeemer of our souls, Who also granteth unto us the Resurrection.

Seasonal Kontakion in the First Mode

Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your common-wealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.

FEBRURY 10 EPISTLE READING II Timothy 2:1-10 GOSPEL READING Matthew 15:21-28 SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Sunday of the Canaanite Hieromartyr Haralambos Porphyrios & Baptos the Monk-

    martyrs Anastasios, Patriarch of Jeru-

    salem

WISDOM OF THE FATHERS He kept her waiting for an

answer in order to declare that the minds of His disciples should also be merciful. As human be-ings they were ashamed of the clamor of the woman as she pur-sued them publicly, but He Him-self knew the character of His mercy. St. Bede, Hom. I. 22, In Lent, Homilies on the Gospels, Bk. One, 216

HYMNS OF THE DAY Resurrectional Apolytikion in

the Fourth Mode Having learned the joyful proc-

lamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Hieromartyr Haralambos in the Fourth Mode

An unshaken pillar of the Church of Christ God art thou, an ever-resplendent lamp, O Har-alampus most wise, which shin-eth through the earth; in martyric contest thou hast shined on the whole world, and thou hast dis-pelled the moonless night of the idols. Now boldly intercede thou with Christ that we may all be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, media-tion unto the creator most con-stant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto

thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

FEBRUARY 17 EPISTLE READING II Timothy 3:10-15 GOSPEL READING Luke 18:10-14 SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Sunday of the Publican and

    Pharisee: Triodion Begins Today

    Theodore the Tyro, Great Mar-tyr

Theodore the New Martyr of Byzantium

    Hermogenes (Germogen), Patriarch of Moscow

The Pious Rulers Marcian and Pulcheria

WISDOM OF THE FATHERS When lately we made mention

of the Pharisee and the publican, and hypothetically yoked two chariots out of virtue and vice; we pointed out each truth, how great is the gain of humbleness of mind, and how great the damage of pride. St. John Chrysostom, CONCERNING LOWLINESS OF MIND.,4th Century

HYMNS OF THE DAY Resurrectional Apolytikion in

the Plagal First Mode Let us worship the Word, O ye

faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glori-ous rising, He also willed to resur-

    rect the dead.

FEBRUARY 24 EPISTLE READING II Corinthians 4:6-15 GOSPEL READING Luke 15:11-32 SAINTS AND FEASTS COMMEMORATED Romanos, Prince of Uglich Cumine the White, Abbot of

    Iona Boswell, Abbot of Melrose

Abbey First & Second Finding of the

Venerable Head of John the Bap-tist

Sunday of the Prodigal Son WISDOM OF THE FATHERS He who truly wishes to believe

in God must be lifted above him-self, his mind, and even the whole world. For this reason, the value of faith is considered higher than the value of man. It is even higher than the value of the whole world. Therefore, the re-ward of faith should be higher than all of man's possessions along with the glories of this world. The reward of faith is God. Fr. Matthew the Poor, Orthodox Prayer Life: The Interior Way, p. 74, 20th century

HYMNS OF THE DAY Resurrectional Apolytikion in

The choir had a busy October. On October 5, we celebrated National Church Music Sunday, where Father George read a blessing for church musicians and administering a pledge between the choir members, psalti and himself.

From October 11 – 14 several of our choir members and spouses attended the Metropolis Choir Conference in Rich-mond as part of the 74 voices making up the choir. We sang the Nicholas Roubanis Divine Liturgy in Greek and the newly approved English under the direction of Mrs. Fifi Nichols, Di-rector of Music of the Annunciation Cathedral, Baltimore, MD.

We were fortunate to have Mrs. Renee Root, our former choir director, present several continuing music institute ses-sions at the conference along with Father Chrysostomos Gil-bert. Conferences are always a joy to attend, sharing fellow-ship with old, new acquaintances and family.

Brian Fink received his 15 year service certificate at the metropolis conference. Since he was not able to attend, Fr. George presented it to him in church on November 18.

We ended the month beginning to rehearse for the upcom-ing Christmas season.

The Forerunner's sacred head, having dawned forth from the earth, doth send incor-ruption's rays unto the faithful, whereby they find healings of their ills. From on high he gath-ereth the choirs of the Angels and on earth he summoneth the whole race of mankind, that they with one voice might send up glory to Christ our God.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

This will allow scheduling employ-ees, eliminate miscommuni-cations and clarify the Hall/Kitchen facility’s availability with the different organiza-

    tions. The Hall Rules should

also be amended to add language stating that said requests be submitted in writing to the House Chair and will require Chair's ap-proval in writing. Also, the Rules currently read that the Hall will be open Mon-day, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. It is not in the budget for employees to keep the Hall open that many hours a week. There-fore, it is proposed that the hours be amended to Mon-day, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am to 11 am, and closed on holidays. Prior arrangements can be made with the House Chair if ac-cess is needed outside the regularly scheduled hours.
