Mass Inten ons GOD’S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough me. We are workers, vol-unteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a me. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, mis-sionaries or charity workers, engaged full- me in works formal-ly iden fied as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gi s are neces-sary. We cannot always see the direct connec on of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while emigra ng to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direc on of a priest. Soon they relocated to Wash-ington. There, the “pious ladies,” as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the presi-dent of Georgetown University, to begin a religious commu-nity. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visita on Or-der founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible rou-

ne, less arduous and more flexible than most tradi ons, and also accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visita on began without reference to the “rule” of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the “reign of terror,” and the rules and cus-toms of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied. (No religious wore the habit in public in the United States un l a er the Civil War.) From the beginning, the Georgetown nuns had an educa onal mission, even though they discov-ered in the “rule” that such work was officially off-limits for the contempla ve life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visita on is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic educa on, and the adjacent monastery is the old-est monas c founda on in the original thirteen United States. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Quotefall Puzzle solving instructions—Find the common two and three letter words first. Do the columns with all the same letters if there are any. Keep going until you have found all the little words. REMEMBER—each letter is used ONLY ONCE. As you use a letter, CROSS IT OUT so you don’t use it twice. Each column has the exact number of letters for that column—don’t mix columns. After all the small words are filled in then it becomes a process of elimination and deduction. And hint—look at today’s PSALM.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Welcoming Ministry Our Vision: The St. Rose of Lima’s parish will be recognized in the Diocese for its highly welcoming atmosphere. From the Synod... DIRECTION II: Reach out and be welcoming to everyone. OUTCOMES: Each parish will develop within one year an outreach and welcoming program both for people within the parish and outside the parish who are looking for support, love, and community. We invite you to consider becoming a Greeter for one of the Masses, just once a month. This will take only 15 minutes of your time before Mass to be that welcoming presence to all who enter our church. You can even do this greeting with one of your children or grandchildren. What a great way to get your children involved in ministry! Drop me an email to let me know when you can become a Greeter. This is a fun and easy ministry!
