Our Lenten Journey: A Period of Purification and Enlightenment

Lent is a time for all of us to grow deeper in our relationship with God. This is also true for the RCIA candidates who are seeking to join the Church and receive the Easter Sacraments. To aid them on their journey, the Church celebrates three rites of self-searching and repentance. These rites, called “Scrutinies”, are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak, defective or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, and then strengthen, all that is upright and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated to deliver the Elect from the power of sin, to protect them against temptation and give them strength in Christ. (From the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, #141). Throughout the season of Lent, the Elect seek to grow in their understanding of salvation in Christ and the mystery of sin. Knowledge of our own weaknesses, the need for healing, and the desire for repentance and conversion is not just for newcomers. All of us are in constant need of the grace of Christ. Celebrating these rites in the Sunday assembly not only helps the Elect by our prayers and witness, it also helps us on our own Lenten journey back to God. The Scru-tinies are celebrated during the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent as we draw near to the passion, death and res-urrection of Christ. The gospels from Cycle A are always used for the Scrutinies. The stories of the Woman at the Well, The Man Born Blind, and The Raising of Lazarus are used because they lead us more deeply into the paschal mystery from spiritual unawareness to the recognition of the need for God’s healing and finally to personal resurrec-tion.

Please keep our Elect in your prayers as they prepare to receive full initiation into the Church at Easter.

Fourth Sunday in Lent

Today’s readings tell us of God’s blessings on his people. In the first reading, God has delivered the people from slav-ery in Egypt and led them into the promised land. After celebrating the Passover they ate the produce of the land for the first time. In the second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians that we are a new creation in Christ. God has given us this as a gift, reconciling us through Christ. We are to pass this gift on to others by our own ministry of reconcilia-tion. In the gospel, Luke gives us the story of the Prodigal Son. After squandering his family’s wealth, the young man, in dire straits, decides to go home. His father welcomes him with open arms, proclaiming that which was lost had been found. The father throws a big celebration in gratitude for the return of his son.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today is Laetare Sunday, a day of rejoicing during this penitential season as a reminder that we are drawing closer to the joy of Easter. Taken from the Introit (introduction), the Church echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Rejoice, Jerusa-lem! Rejoice with her, you who mourned, and you will find contentment.” Today’s readings remind us of the goodness of God and his compassion for us. In the first reading the Lord tells Joshua that he has removed the reproach (sin) of his people and is bringing them into the land he promised them. Their journey is over; they have come home. Today they will eat the fruit of the land. The man-na ceases because the people have come into their own. God’s providence had sustained them throughout their desert journey. God has now given them new blessings, providing them a rich and abundant land. Our Lenten journey is sym-bolic, not only of the wandering in the desert, but our journey through life. God’s providence sustains us on our earthly journey. Christ gives us the sacraments as signs that God has removed our reproach and forgives our sins. The Eucharist is the food that sustains us on our journey until we come to the eternal banquet in heaven. Because we have received this great gift of salvation (which simply means that God has reconciled us to himself), St. Paul calls us to become the righteousness of God, reconciling through our own forgiveness of others, just as we have been for-given. What was lost in the Garden of Eden (estrangement from God) is restored through the righteousness of Christ. Like the Israelites in the promised land, we are strangers and aliens no longer, but are now children of God. Being children of God is the whole point of the parable of the Prodigal Son. The younger son has been seduced by the pleasures of the world and prefers them to the company of his family. He becomes estranged from his father (God) and discovers that the goods of the world will not sustain him. So he begins his long journey home. But before he can even make his apology, his father rushes out to embrace him and welcomes him home. This is the key to the whole story. God always has room for us in his house. The reunion of the family is more important than the transgressions that separated them in the first place. The older son fails to recognize this and seems unwilling to forgive. These lessons are meant for us. Do we forgive those who have transgressed against us (as we say every time we recite the Lord’s prayer)? Do we realize that love is the Spirit of God that unites us? If the boy had not realized his mistake and begun the journey back, he never would have experienced the love and forgiveness of his father. If pride or foolishness kept him away, he would have remained estranged from his family forever. Lent is our journey back to God through our decision to bring reconciliation and forgiveness to our relationships. There is no other way. Last weekend Chip Wirth gave a great presentation on the new McKenna Technical Institute in Haiti and all the won-derful things that are happening there. If you have not yet had the chance to participate in this, our Lenten Mission Ap-peal, envelopes are available at the rectory and checks can be made out to St. Robert Bellarmine on behalf of the mission. Thank you for your generosity and support of the children. The RCIA Elect will celebrate the Second Scrutiny today at the 10 a.m. mass, a short ritual asking God’s blessings dur-ing the period of purification and enlightenment in preparation for receiving the Easter sacraments. They will celebrate the Third, and last, Scrutiny next Sunday at the 8 a.m. mass. These rites are detailed on page two. I want to thank Deacon Bill and all those who volunteered with the multi-parish mission last week. A lot of work goes into the planning and preparation. I enjoyed the presentations by Fr. Tom Dore and Dr. Chrissy Zaker. I hope that everyone who attended got a spiritual boost for their Lenten journey. Thanks to Mary Beth Gerlach for hosting the wonderful School Book Fair last week. I hope everyone had a chance to visit and see the great things that are happening in our school. Last week we printed Archbishop Cupich’s vision letter for the Reconfiguration of the Archdiocese and his hopes to dream big. Please read my article (see page six) with an outline of the process and where we go from here as it affects our parish and community. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus’ Passion and Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ’s love for us.

Reconfiguration of the Archdiocese “Renew My Church”

Archbishop Cupich has outlined his hopes that we can “Dream Big” as an Archdiocese to ensure the on-going and future vitality of our parishes and schools. I would like to address some of the more nuts and bolts issues that are involved in the process. Last summer the Archbishop engaged the services of the McKinsey Group to help assess our current situation. The McKinsey group donated their time and expertise to look at the financial situation of our parishes and the overall Archdiocese. They also interviewed every pastor in the Archdiocese regarding the spiritual and formation-al issues that are of paramount importance to the parishes. They found that, in general (and not reflecting on any individual parish) it takes about 400 parishioners (based on October mass counts) to simply keep the doors open and celebrate the sacraments. It takes about 1,000 parishioners to ensure vitality, having programs, staff and vol-unteers to sustain parish ministries. In addition, the Archdiocese (meaning, of course, the rest of the parishes) sub-sidizes 38% of the elementary schools and 23% of our parishes. There is also approximately $300 million in dif-fered maintenance on the parish, school and Archdiocesan buildings. The Archbishop’s primary concern is the issue of priest availability. Based on current trends, by 2030 (less than fifteen years away) there will only be 240 pastors available foe the 360 parishes and missions in the Archdiocese. So Archbishop Cupich has chosen to be proactive, looking for creative ways to ensure the vibrancy of the entire faith community of the Archdiocese. To that end, he has held three meetings with the entire presbyterate (the priests), beginning last September, to inform us of the situation and to strategize about the best way to serve our people. There are several possible models of parish configuration, though there is no “one size fits all” solution; and many different components of parish vitality, though again no parish will have them all. Currently underway are a series of meetings at the vicariates with parish/school staff members as well as with lay leaders from the parish financial, school and pastoral councils. The local deaneries are also meeting to discuss possible synergies among their parishes. I have already met with our parish pastoral council, finance committee and school board to update them on this initiative and to start a conversation about our strengths, some of our dreams for the future and some ways we can collaborate with other parishes that make us all more vital in carrying on our mission. Concurrently, over the next several months, the Archbishop and his planning staff will develop the criteria which will be used as a template to guide the reconfiguration process. There is no automatic cutoff point in choosing if a parish stays open, and no area of the Archdiocese will be abandoned. Clearly, there will always be some needy parishes and schools that promote the mission of the Church. We just can’t support as many as we do now. Once the template has been completed and deaneries look at possible models for the future, each parish will be assigned a grouping of local parishes to figure out what they think will work best for them. My understanding is that this will be rolled out in waves over the next two or three years so that each wave can learn from the experiences of those who have already engaged in the process. In some ways this has already begun, since the recently an-nounced reconfiguration in the Pilsen neighborhood began before this initiative and in some way serves as a model for what the Archbishop would like to accomplish. As of now, nothing has been decided about the template or the parish models most appropriate to any given geo-graphic area. Although we are doing well here at St. Robert’s, at some point we, along with the other parishes in our deanery, will be involved in the planning process. What that will look like will be a collaborative effort of the priests, parish staffs and parish leaders and will probably include some town hall meetings and/or surveys of the parishioners. As I get more information I will let you know. Fr. Neil
