Dear Friends in Christ,
I hope you are enjoying the teachings on the Eucharist and the Saint of the Week as I continue my sabbati-cal in West, East, South and North African Countries. Pictures and videos from my journey are available on our Facebook page - StPatrickMcHenry and a few of them are included in this bulletin - see pages 6 and 7.
Please keep me in your prayers and be assured of mine for you. I will see you in August.
In Christ,
Fr. Godwin
The Eucharist “Source & Summit of the Catholic Faith”
There are many stories of miracles throughout Church history that seem to confirm the Catholic belief that Jesus Christ is really, truly, and substantially present in the Eucharist. It is however important to note that no Catholic is required to be-lieve any of these stories. Even though investigated and ap-proved by the Church, the Church does not give any absolute guarantee to their authenticity. Most importantly, the Catholic dogma of Transubstantiation does not depend on the authen-ticity of these stories (it is based on Scripture and Tradition).
Miracle of Lanciano—8th century: In the 8th century, a priest in Lanciano, Italy was experiencing doubts about the Real Pres-ence of Jesus in the Eucharist. During Mass, he said the words of consecration (“This is my body”, “This is my blood”) and saw the bread and wine transform into real human flesh and blood. The blood coagulated into five globules
(later this was believed to be representative of the five wounds of Christ). As word of the miracle spread, the local archbishop launched an investigation, and the Church ap-proved the miracle. The flesh is still preserved to this day. Odoardo Linoli, a professor of anatomy, conducted a scien-tific analysis of the flesh in 1971 and concluded that the flesh was cardiac tissue, the blood appeared to be flesh blood (as opposed to blood over 1200 years old) and there was no trace of preservatives. You can visit the miraculous flesh and blood in the Church of San Francesco in Lanciano, Italy.
Hosts of Siena, Italy—18th century: On August 14, 1730, while a special festival for the eve of the feast of the Assumption was taking place in Siena, Italy thieves entered the Church of St. Francis and stole a golden cibori-um containing hundreds of consecrated hosts. Two days later, someone noticed something white protruding from the offering box at anoth-er church in Siena. The priests opened the box and found the missing hosts inside, entangled
in cobwebs and dirt. After being cleaned as much as possi-ble, the hosts were placed in a new ciborium and taken back to the Church of St. Francis for prayers of reparation and veneration. Since the hosts were dirty, the priests decided not to consume them but to let them simply deteriorate. Over the next few decades, not only did the hosts not deteriorate, but they actually appeared fresh. The hosts remain in this state to this date, 289 years later, and can still be seen in the (now) Basilica of St. Francis in Siena, Italy.
Saint(s) of the Week
St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop & Doctor of the Church
(378-June 27, 444)
Cyril, recognized as a great teacher of the Church, certainly was not born with a halo around his head. He began his career as archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt, with impul-sive, often violent, actions. He pillaged and closed the churches of the Novatian heretics, participated in the disposing of St. John Chrysostom, and confiscated Jewish proper-ty, expelling the Jews from Alexandria in re-
taliation for their attacks on Christians.
His importance for theology and Church history lies in his championing the cause of orthodoxy against the heresy of Nestorius, who taught that in Christ there were two persons, one human and one divine. This controversy centered around the two natures of Christ. Nestorius would not agree to the title “God-bearer” for Mary. He preferred “Christ-bearer,” saying there are two distinct persons in Christ—divine and human—joined only by a moral union. He said Mary was not the mother of God but only the man Christ, whose humanity was only a temple of God. Nestorianism implied that the humanity of Christ was a mere disguise.
Cyril, presiding as the pope’s representative at the Council of Ephesus in 431, condemned Nestorianism and proclaimed Mary truly the “God-bearer”- the mother of one Person who is truly God and truly human. In the confusion that followed, Cyril was deposed and imprisoned for three months, after which he was welcomed back to Alexandria.
Besides needing to soften some of his opposition to those who sided with Nestorius, Cyril had difficulties with his allies, especially those who thought he had gone too far, sacrificing not only language, but orthodoxy. Until his death, his policy of moderation, kept his extreme partisans under control.
Lives of the saints are valuable not only for the virtue they reveal but also for the less admirable qualities that also ap-pear. Holiness is a gift of God to us as human beings. Life is a process. We respond to God’s gift, but sometimes with a lot of zigzagging. If Cyril had been more patient and diplomatic, the Nestorian church might not have risen and maintained power for so long. But even saints must grow out of immaturi-ty, narrowness, and selfishness. It is because they—and we—do grow that, we are truly saints, persons who live the life of God.

Journey of Faith: Father Godwin's Sabbatical 2019
ONE GOD, ONE FAITH, ONE UNIVERSAL CHURCH ...WITH MANY FACES. It is with a most humble heart that I share my journey with you.
The Irish Missionaries, centuries ago left the comfort of their homes in order to evangelize many Africans. Despite strengths, weakness and various struggles,
their efforts have born great fruits! Good things have come out of their efforts.
The Africans have loved the Lord so much that they laid down their lives and died for Christ. This is evident in the martyrdom of the African Youth.
I had the rare privilege of attending the celebration of the Mass of the Martyrs of Uganda.
Pilgrims on the way to and waiting to get into Mass. Some have walked for weeks to attend Mass in honor of the Ugandan Mar-tyrs
Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ/Corpus Christi Page 7
The Africans are evangelized by the Irish missionaries still today! These missionaries are still bearing witness, laying down their lives through mission work at home and abroad, in imitation of many, but especially the St. Patrick Fathers of Ireland. I have had the privilege to travel to the most remote areas of Kenya where the St. Patrick mission of Ireland started missionary work in 1952. Now St. Paul missionaries of Nigeria are laying down their lives for the people in Losajait. They are living in extreme human conditions, no water and no electricity and on average one small meal a day of corn and beans....sometimes no meal at all.
Over a million people attended Mass for the Ugandan Martyrs

Family is an incredible blessing to a middle-aged couple who is struggling to make ends meet while fighting cancer. While their grown children are
working hard to pay bills and provide support, the extended family’s bills sometimes leave them unable to pay for nutritional supplements and necessary hygiene products. Vincentians visited this family with prayers, food and a gift certificate so they could purchase Ensure. SVdP also filled the family car with gas so they could make it to a doctor’s appointment. Please consider helping families such as this with a donation to the Poor Box and/or paper products this month. Matthew 7:12 “So always treat others as you would like them to treat you, that is the Law and Proph-ets.”

Friends,
What do a celibate man, a guy who is dating, a
married man, and a priest have in common? Apparently just being men, since each one of them lives a different stage of life. However, almost 91 years ago, on August 15, 1926, de-spite being so different in their vocations, four men sealed with their blood a story of love.
Salvador Lara, David Roldan, Manuel Morales, and Fr. Luis Batís, like many other witnesses, lived in a time of persecu-tion to the Catholic Church in Mexico. They decided to stand firm in their faith, to live what they believed, and peacefully defend their faith. Salvador, David and Manuel founded a local group of the A.C.J.M. (Catholic action of the Mexican Youth) this caused them to be apprehended on August 14, 1926, and later to be executed with Father Luis Batís, on the 15th of August of 1926.
The commanders of the army asked them to renounce their faith, and thus they would let them go without any punish-ment, but they, filled with the courage that only faith can give, responded: "Long life Christ the King and Holy Mary of Gua-dalupe."
Father Luis Batís was pleading for Manuel Morales: "The only thing I ask you is to release Manuel Morales, he has to take care of his three young children, he has as a family. I offer my life for him. I will be a victim; I am willing to be". The soldiers did not listen to the priest's pleas. Manuel replied, "God will watch over my children".
The bullets of the military took their earthly lives, but they gave them entrance into the heavenly life by turning them into martyrs of the faith in Christ the King and Mary of Guadalupe.
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we have the opportunity to renew our faith and devo-tion in Christ present in the Holy Eucharist. Although each of us has a different life story, we are joined by the same story of love for Christ alive and present in each one of us, but es-pecially in the Eucharist.
Happy Corpus Christi! Fr. Manny
