2. SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH

A Message From Our Pastor

Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week WATCH – Documentaries – SPECIAL TOPICS

Powers and Dominions

Of all seven Sacraments, one is central and “most blessed.” The Eucharist as described in the Catechism of the Catholic Church ¶ 1734: “The mode of Christ's pres-ence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as ‘the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend.’ In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist ‘the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained. …[I]t is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and entirely present.’” When in the presence of the Eucharist, one is in the very true presence of Jesus Christ himself. When consuming the Eucharist, one enters a most intimate communion with Christ our Lord, which draws the believer into the same communion the Son has with the Father. This close proximity to the all-loving God is where we can find the ultimate protection from the forces of the evil one. The devil and his legion flee in the presence of Jesus as he has already defeated them and they know they cannot prevail against him. Even people who are in league with the devil believe in the true presence and want to alleviate our belief. Their success serves only to separate us from God where we are more prone to succumb to the devil’s ad-vances. Therefore, to hold tight to Christ’s presence in the Eucharist is crucial to our faith and must never be taken for granted. In the weeks to come, I will write about the other Sacra-ments. With the basis that the Eucharist is, “the end to

which all the sacraments tend,” we will see how each of the other Sacraments prepares us to better receive Jesus in the Eucharist while aiding our defense against evil forces with God’s grace.

NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS AUGUST 25, 2019 3.

Key Scriptural Passage:

Jesus said, "Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? Not, I tell you, but rather division!” (Luke 12:51)

Questions for Discussion:

Adult: When has your taking a strong stand on a moral issue created division rather than healing in the short term? Child: Is it important to do the right thing even if others are angry as a result? Why or why not?

Readings For The Week

Monday………….Eph 3:14-19/Mt 11:25-30 Tuesday………….Sr 15:1-6/Jn 17:20-23 Wednesday………Th 2:2b-8/Jn 21:15-17 Thursday………...Is 9:1-6/Lk 1:26-38 Friday……………Ru 1;1,3-6,14-16/Mt 22:34-40 Saturday…………Rv 21:9-14/Jn 1:45-51

Pro-Life Corner....Think about this. If Planned Parent-hood was selling puppy body parts, they would have been closed down yesterday. But it’s not puppies, it is human body parts. Planned Parenthood and those who buy these parts must be stopped. Pray and work to end abortion to-day.

Area Church Dinners...

August 25: Sts Cyril and Methodius Church picnic in Cis-tern. Fried chicken and sausage dinner at 11:00 a.m. $10.00 per plate. Dine in or plates to go. Auction, bingo, games, music in the afternoon.

Vocation Prayer Cross… If you or you family is interested in praying one week for vocations, please call Nelda Schmidt at 543-7259. It is a spiritual imperative that we all pray for vocations, especially from our own parish. If you have never considered this, now may be the time.

Save the Date… St Philip the Apostle Parish Mission with Fr. Greg Bramlage, October 14-16, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. each evening in the parish gym.

St. Philip Catholic School….Thank you to the following who have contributed to the St. Philip School annual cam-paign. Anne Marie Novosad, Randy & Becky Mitchell, Mike & Laniel Kennedy, Shannon & Amanda Srubar, M/M Paul Whatley, Clyde Reynolds, Barbara Hrncir

FIRST READING - Isaiah 66:18-21 Thus says the LORD: I know their works and their thoughts, and I come to gather nations of every language; they shall come and see my glory. I will set a sign among them; from them I will send fugitives to the nations: to Tarshish, Put and Lud, Mosoch, Tubal and Javan, to the distant coastlands that have never heard of my fame, or seen my glory; and they shall proclaim my glory among the nations. They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations as an offering to the LORD, on horses and in chariots, in carts, upon mules and dromedaries, to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their offering to the house of the LORD in clean vessels. Some of these I will take as priests and Levites, says the LORD.

SECOND READING - Hebrews 12:5-7,11-13 Brothers and sisters, You have forgotten the exhortation ad-dressed to you as children: "My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowl-edges." Endure your trials as "discipline"; God treats you as sons. For what "son" is there whom his father does not discipline? At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain,

yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed.

GOSPEL - Luke 13:22-30 Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be saved?" He answered them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to en-ter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, 'Lord, open the door for us.' He will say to you in reply, 'I do not know where you are from. And you will say, 'We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.' Then he will say to you, 'I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!' And there will be wail-ing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you your-selves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."

2019 Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA) - Our parish re-ceived the following information, from the Chancery Office, re-garding our 2019 DSA Goal: $94,561.00. Everyone should have received a letter and a pledge card, from Bishop Cahill. Please consider making a donation toward our parish goal. Any amount would greatly assist us. Catholic Rural Life - Blessing of First Fruits

From early times, first fruits were something special. They were the first taste of a new season’s produce with a promise of more variety and quantity to come. An end of the fast from fresh food and from a dwindling amount of last year’s harvest. First fruits were seen as sacred. The best portion is to be of-fered in thanksgiving to the Creator, and then shared with those most in need and with each other as a blessing from God. As preparation for this blessing, each person should bring the “first-harvest/first fruits” of this growing season’s labors.

Opening Prayer: Creator and ruler of the universe, we thank You for Your guidance. Help us to be attentive to Your ways as we offer You the first fruits our labor. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Closing Blessing: O Bountiful Giver of gifts, you provide what we need for abundant living. You give us the strength of our bodies so that we may work in your vineyard, providing for ourselves and those you have placed in our care. We offer you thanks for these beautiful and useful gifts, the first and best of what we have. Make us always mindful of Your continuous symphony of life and love first found in the Garden of Eden by our parents Adam and Eve and the labor-ers of the land. Though our work has at times been difficult, we rejoice that trouble of every kind has been overcome with your help. May all who join in tasting the first fruits of our labor know the joy of your im-measurable love. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord . Amen.
