LIGHT

“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians

5:14). We are at the midpoint of our Lenten jour-ney of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep”

along the road to conversion. The most powerful stories of conversion are proclaimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake

us out of our sleep. Today’s Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind exposes the real

blindness in the time of Christ—the blindness of the self-righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks,

at the Easter Vigil, the Church will proclaim “Christ our Light” as the paschal candle is carried

into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that still pervades our

lives, communities, and world, be dispelled by the Christ who comes to bring sight to the blind and

light to the world.

LUZ “Despierta, tú que duermes; levántate

de entre los muertos y Cristo será tu luz” (Efesios 5:14). Estamos a medio camino en la jornada de Cuaresma para la conver-

sión. Como siempre, Dios no se da por venci-do con nosotros, especialmente con aquellos que “duermen” en el camino a la conversión.

Los más grandes relatos de conversión se proclaman en estas semanas finales de la

Cuaresma. Estos tienen el poder de sacudir-nos de nuestro sueño. El relato del Evangelio

de hoy sobre la curación del ciego de naci-miento expone la verdadera ceguera en tiem-pos de Cristo –la ceguera de los líderes reli-

giosos que se creían muy buenos y justos. Dentro de pocas semanas, en la Vigilia Pas-cual, la Iglesia proclamará a “Cristo nuestra Luz” cuando el Cirio Pascual es llevado den-tro de las iglesias oscuras de todo el mundo. Que la oscuridad del pecado que impregna

nuestra vida, comunidades y nuestro mundo sea disipada por Cristo quien viene trayendo

vista al ciego y luz al mundo.

SANTO TORIBIO DE MOGROVEJO (1538-1606) 23 de marzo

Toribio nació en Mallorca, España y desde muy joven mostró un interés y conocimiento notable del

derecho civil llegando a ser profesor de Derecho en Sala-manca y juez inquisitorio. Siendo laico recibió el nom-

bramiento de Arzobispo de Lima, por pedido del rey Fe-lipe II al Papa Gregorio XIII. Llegó a Lima, Perú en 1581

y quedó sorprendido al ser testigo de los abusos de los conquistadores y la poca atención del clero hacia los

pobres, pues se habían puesto del lado de los opresores. Esta situación le conmovió tanto que fue el primero en

convocar un concilio de obispos en América; como fruto del mismo concilio se logró la impresión de catecismos y

libros de texto en el idioma vernáculo, promoviendo además, una renovación en la vida de los sacerdotes. Visi-tó todas las comunidades de su diócesis en tres ocasiones,

sufriendo los embates del clima, el hambre y la falta de mapas. Además de fundar hospitales y el primer seminario de América, fue quien trajo justicia y paz al Nuevo Mun-do. Se le honra como el santo patrono de los obispos lati-

noamericanos.

SAINT TURIBIUS OF MOGROVEJO (1538-1606) March 23

In times of crisis, God always surprises the Church with unlikely saints, through whom Christ’s light radiates beyond their local communities to illumine the universal

Church. Charles Borromeo was such a saint: appointed Arch-bishop of Milan at twenty-one by his papal uncle, epitomiz-ing the corruption that the reformers condemned, Charles

instead inspired a revival that reinvigorated a Church devas-tated by the Reformation. His less well-known contemporary, Turibius of Mongrovejo, was God’s “saintly surprise” in the

New World. Spanish-born lawyer, professor, head of the feared Inquisition, Turibius was still a layman when a grate-ful king appointed him Archbishop of far-off Lima. Once in Peru, however, Turibius was appalled at the abuse of indige-nous peoples by the occupying conquistadores—his fellow countrymen—and by the complicity of the clergy. He be-came the natives’ devoted advocate, building churches,

schools, hospitals, and the first seminary in the Americas, publishing catechisms and prayerbooks in the native lan-

guages he painstakingly mastered. Four hundred years later, whenever Pope Benedict welcomed Latin American bishops

to Rome, he always invoked “the shining example of San Toribio.”

Saint Michael Parish Family,

The action of our bishops in the Archdiocese of Atlanta to suspend all public Masses from now March 17th thru April 4th-5th (Palm Sunday) is sad but necessary.

We, your priests want you to know that we are here for you and we want you to continue to pray with us.

Our doors are not locked with Eucharistic Adoration in our sanctuary- even though we should now pray individually, mostly from home, and not in large groups even at church.

Our confessionals are open during the same hours as usual. We will have additional hours for confession later in Lent since our penance ser-vice is cancelled. If you come for confession keep some distance from others who are waiting with you.

With the suspension of Masses obviously the parish will suffer the loss of our Offertory gifts. Please continue to bless St. Michael with your stew-ardship and consider our OnLine Giving option which you can sign up for at our www.saintmichael.cc website, under, OnLine Giving.

Remember, Jesus is Lord of heaven and earth!

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

Una Carta del Padre Tim Hepburn Familia de la Parroquia de San Miguel,

La acción de nuestros obispos en la Arquidiócesis de Atlanta para sus-pender todas las Misas públicas desde ahora del 17 de marzo hasta el 4 y 5 de abril (Domingo de Ramos) es triste pero necesaria.

Nosotros, sus sacerdotes, queremos que sepan que estamos aquí para ayudarlos y queremos que continúen orando con nosotros.

Nuestras puertas no están cerradas con Adoración Eucarística en nuestro santuario, a pesar de que ahora debemos rezar individualmente, principalmente desde casa, y no en grupos grandes, incluso en la iglesia.

Nuestros confesionarios están abiertos durante las mismas horas que de costumbre. Tendremos horas adicionales para la confesión más tarde en la Cuaresma ya que nuestro servicio de penitencia será cancelado.
