(One of the following forms of the penitential act is used:)

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. “May God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.” Amen.

“Have mercy on us, O Lord.” For we have sinned against you. Show us, O Lord, your mercy.” And grant us your salvation. “May God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.” Amen. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy. “Christ, have mercy,” Christ, have mercy. “Lord, have mercy,” Lord, have mercy.

Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace to people of goodwill.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father, Amen.

Responsorial - Psalm 63

Music: (C) 1997, 1998 Steve Angrisano. Published by OCP.

O God, you are my God, and I will always praise you. In the shadows of your wings I cling to you and you hold me high. Through the day you walk with me; all the night your love surrounds me. To the glory of you name I lift my hands, I sing your praise. I will never be afraid, for I will not be abandoned. Even when the road grows long and weary your love will rescue me.

1st Reading - Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a

A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy

Moses said to the people: "Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep his commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers, in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.

"Do not forget the LORD, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery; who guided you through the vast and terrible desert with its saraph serpents and scorpions, its parched and waterless ground; who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock and fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your fathers."

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel - John 6:51-58

The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

2nd Reading - 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 A Reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord; whoever

eats this bread will live forever.

Music Owen Alstott, © 1977, 1990, OCP. Reprint Permission: LicenSing #603423

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."

Sequence Lo! the angel’s food is given to the pilgrim who has striven; See the children’s bread from heaven, which on dogs may not be spent. Truth the ancient types fulfilling, Isaac bound, a victim willing, Paschal Lamb, its lifeblood spilling, manna to the fathers sent. Very bread, good shepherd, tend us, Jesu, of your love befriend us. You refresh us, you defend us, your eternal good send us in the land of life to see. You who all things can and know, who on earth such food bestow, grant us with your saints, though lowest, where the heavenly feast you show, fellows heirs and guests to be. Amen. Alleluia.

Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Presentation & Preparation of the Gifts

Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, (bow) who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle, be our protection

against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him,

we humbly pray; and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly host,

by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl about the world seeking the

ruin of souls. Amen.

June 14th, 2020—Corpus Christi

The Eucharist is not simply something we receive; it is something we do. The Eucharist is not simply a noun; it is fundamentally a verb, an action. Now we believe many important things about the noun of the Eucharist. We believe that the bread and wine become for us the real Body and Blood of the Lord. This is what we celebrate today on the Feast of Corpus Christi. When we eat this bread and drink this cup we receive into our hearts the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus. This is a great mystery and a great treasure. We should receive the Eucharist often. But we cannot appreciate the Body and Blood of the Lord, the noun of the Eucharist, if we separate it from the verb of the Eucharist. For it is the action of the Eucharist that allows the bread and wine to become the Body and Blood of Christ for us. There is no doubt that the Body and Blood of Christ, Christ's Real Presence, is a tremendous gift to us, but the meaning of that gift is not clear if it is separated from the action of the Eucharist. Eucharist is a verb: gathering, listening, blessing, eating, going forth. It is we the church, reminding ourselves of our dignity and obligation. We do not simply receive the Eucharist. We do it! So let's do it now!

Our Lady of Fatima: Pray for Us

The first covenant made with Moses and Israel at Sinai was but a shadow of this new and greater covenant made by Christ with all humankind in that upper room (see Hebrews 10:1). The Passover that Jesus celebrates with His twelve apostles “actualizes,” makes real, what could only be symbolized by Moses’ sacrifice at the altar with twelve pillars. What Jesus does today is establish His Church as the new Israel, and His Eucharist as the new worship of the living God. In offering himself to God through the Spirit, Jesus delivered Israel from the transgres-sions of the first covenant. By His blood He purified us and made us capable of true worship. God does not want dead works or animal sacrifices. He wants our own flesh and blood, our own lives, consecrated to Him, offered as a living sacrifice. This is the sacri-fice of praise and thanksgiving that we sing of in today’s Psalm. This is the Eucharist. What we do in memory of Him is to pledge our lives to Him, to renew our promise to live by the words of His covenant, and to be His servants. There is no other return we can offer to Him for the eternal inheritance He has won for us. So let us approach the altar, calling upon His name in thanksgiving, taking up the cup of salvation. Our goal is to provide prayer support and recognition for the men and women of the St Michael community who are serving on active duty in the United States Armed Forces.

If you have a family member or close friend serving on active duty who could use our community’s prayer support for their health, well being and safe return,

call the church office so we can add their name: Please provide their rank and which

branch of the service they are in.

Dear friends in Christ:

As you gather for meals please pray the following, seeking God’s Light and Peace through our Lord

and Savior, Christ the Lord I suggest that we all remember to drop a card and

call all our friends who are alone and afraid. We gather our strength through the Divine Physician.

I will be saying Daily Mass in private and pray for all Mass

intentions that families have asked for. Fr John

Prayer before meals:

Loving Father,

As we gather at our table to give thanks and honor to You, We remember Your grace

and open our hearts to Your compassion. We are in a pandemic and our hearts are restless.

The future which lies ahead is uncertain and anxiety producing. We place ourselves in Your care,

entrusting our lives to You. Bless our family, our parish, our nation, and our world.

Give us comfort and strength. Help us to see beyond this challenge and find comfort in Your guidance.

Adoration Chapel Meditations --from the Brothers in Christ Ministry of St. Michael (www.brothersinchristcmf.org/blog)

The Call to Be Holy Bacteria The sheltering in place we did for a few months gave our minds a chance to ponder crazy questions we’d never have considered before the pandemic. Here’s one about the Covid 19 virus itself: Are people more like a virus or a bacterium? The readings for the Solemnity of The Body and Blood of Christ--about the bread of life--inspired this question. Some bread—like sourdough—requires a starter formula consisting of bacteria and microorganisms that, the longer they live and collaborate, can help you continue making bread that’s more flavorful with each loaf. Some bakers have starter in their refrigerator that’s been around for a century. The bacteria in it are alive. Viruses, on the other hand, are not considered to be “living” because they must leach off a host cell to sustain existence. They end up killing to stay alive. So, unlike bacteria, which are not only alive but exist to sustain life, viruses are lifeless parasites requiring a host cell to continue a kind of undead existence—like a vampire. Kind of fitting, considering all the conjecture connecting Covid 19’s origin to bats. We must come together and take collective action to partake in our Father’s gifts, because where we bacteria are con-cerned, there’s power in numbers. He tested our reaction to the manna He rained down on us, and it not only kept us alive, but we developed a taste for it. You may think this analogy of humanity to bacteria is itself breaking down. Which are we, the bacteria that feeds on God’s food or the bacteria that becomes the food God gives? Both. The Gospel reading from John (JN 6:51-58), in which Jesus—the sustainable bread of life sent from heaven—completes the analogy we started with: "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” We are called to participate in a feast in which we become what we eat. Suddenly the idea of becoming a bacterium that oozes with life becomes a no-brainer considering the alternative of staying dead as a virus.

Because of you, thousands of people across our diocese have found help and hope at Catholic Charities during these challenging times. Requests for assistance have increased drastically since the pandemic began. Hot meal pro-grams that transitioned to a takeout model saw an increase of up to 50%, St. Augustine Hunger Center is delivering more than 500 meals per day to those in need, pre-packaged pantry distribution has increased up to 3x more than before the pandemic began, and the St. Elizabeth Center shelter is practicing social distancing by moving all clients to motels. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to respond to these requests, serving more people and changing more lives than we ever thought possible. As of April 30th, a total of 36,249 faithful donors from across the Diocese have pledged $10.5 million towards the Annual Appeal goal of $13.5 million. Here at St. Michael, 194 parishioners have pledged $82,528.00 toward our parish goal of $106,414.00. That is 77.55% of our overall goal! Your financial support makes a difference and transforms lives. Thank you on behalf of those served by Catholic Charities.
