Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2019
oops! And YES, it’s the same clipart pic-
ture from last week. Someone (and that means me) got a little ahead of myself and plopped the 18th Sunday clipart pic-ture onto the 17th Sunday Pastor Column. And so it happens! The clipart picture WORKS for both weekends, as the Gospels are always about Jesus TEACHING and like last week, about prayer, and this weekend about our priorities. Where do you place your priorities? That’s a really BIG question for all of us.
What I have come to know is that our priorities in life DO CHANGE and more concretely NEED to change (read that as adapt, develop, improve, mature) as our life in Christ and our relationship with Christ grows. What WAS important THEN, may not be important NOW. And to borrow a Mat-thew parable of the sower and the seed, the image of that seed planted on shallow ground, rocky ground, pathways and on good ground; pairs well with our NEED to CHANGE – to CULTIVATE the seed planted in the good ground and NOT the “other stuff” that Matthew hints at as rocky, shallow and pathway ground. For the Lukan analogy, bigger barns are NOT the answer. But BIGGER hearts that place all and every-thing in and on Christ
and in Him IS the an-swer.
So, where do you place your priorities?
And then TEN DAYS after that St. Mary School begins for
the 2019-2020 School Year. Yes, Wednesday August 28th is THE DAY and with big smiles and uniforms neatly pressed, 247
students will walk through the main doors to greet one another as they move into their new level classrooms! Teachers are already busy preparing their rooms and lesson plans and with THANKS to those who supported our School Fundraiser, students in Grade 4 through 8 will have their own Chromebook for educational use! It’s going to be a Great Year!
TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE PARISH PICNIC! Did you sign up to help? Are you baking some goodies?
Are you putting together a “door prize” basket?
This year’s PICNIC is gonna be the BEST ONE YET – because of
YOU!

Bulletin Prayer List
Mother Teresa
“Christ, the Head of the Family”
Christ is the Head of this family, the silent
listener at every conversation, the unseen
guest at every meal.
Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Medi-
tations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987)
Family Perspective
“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much.”
We have been blessed with abundance. Yet, we are tempted
to want even more. A Christian family reaches out to oth-
ers. Pope Francis recommends experiencing “the happiness
of giving, the nobility and grandeur of spending ourselves
unstintingly, without asking to be repaid, purely for the
pleasure of giving and serving.” The joy of Love #94. How
are you and your family doing?
In Your Charity
In your charity, please remember the
repose of the soul of Marilyn Fortunato.
May she rest in eternal peace.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes
By Angela Kovic
Director of Music and Liturgy
ACCOMPLISHED
What do you think about when deciding if you are suc-
cessful in life? Is it having a certain amount of money in
your savings account, or a big enough house? It’s easy to
get overwhelmed and bogged down by how much stuff
we have in life! This weekend’s readings remind us that
for all of the material things we have gained throughout
our earthly life, none of it will be coming with us to
heaven! Our memories and bonds that we made along the
way, the faith that we grew? Those things will continue
on. I have chosen a beautiful and delicate preparation
hymn by well known composer Dan Schutte (who also
City of God and Here I Am, Lord) entitled ‘These Alone
Are Enough.” All we need is God; our lives will be suc-
cessful with what we make with the gifts he has given to
us!
If you are at church on Saturday, I will be away in Pitts-
burg for a friend’s bridal shower! Our guitarist Pat and
cantor Kathy will do a fine job leading the music while I
am gone. I’ll be back for Sunday!
Traditional Choir is off for the rest of the summer. If you
are interested in participating in choir, cantoring, or play-
ing an instrument during mass, please call or see Mrs.

Join Coffee, Tea and Thee for a 12-week study in the Fr.
Garrity center on Sundays at 12:30pm beginning on
September 8th - November 24th. A limited amount of
study books are available (but not required) at a reduced
cost of $10.00. Contact Janel Abraham at the Rectory Of-
fice ( (440) 243-3877 ) if you would like to pick up a
copy of the book.
This 5-star rated study program will take you on a com-
prehensive Journey through Scripture. By reading the Bi-
ble from the heart of the Church, and engaging both the
Old and New Testaments, and how they work together.
It’s grounded in history, yet actively engages topics faced
by today’s Catholic. More than just an ordinary Bible
study, it’s biblical catechesis.
The Bible and the Virgin Mary is a dynamic twelve-part
video series that beautifully explains the Catholic truths
about Our Lady, showing how she has been a part of
Gods plan to bring salvation to the world since the begin-
ning of time.

Eucharistic Ministers NEEDED: Have you ever thought about serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy
Communion? This ministry needs YOU! EM’s assist during Mass by distributing Holy Communion and The Blood of
Christ. Seven EM's are scheduled for each Mass, 3 for Holy Communion, and 4 for the Blood of Christ. Ministers usu-
ally serve one to two Masses per month based on availability and Mass preference.
Ministers must be certified and classes are held throughout the year at different parishes around the region. Please
contact St. Mary's Parish office to attend a class in late September and throughout October. These sessions fill up
quickly. For more information or sign up for a session, please contact the parish office.
If you have any questions about this ministry, please contact Fr. John, Fr. Mike or Deacon Tom.

YETI - Summer Retreat
Christmas in July was a great success because
so many participated. So THANK YOU to:
All who brought items to be donated, do-
nated cash, worked the truck, helped at the
party on Saturday and all who joined the fun
by eating a Christmas cookie after Mass! We donated over
45 boxes of goods, 12 oversized packages of paper products
and $510 in cash donations! By the way, did you notice that
the truck did NOT say “Church Street Ministries”? The truck
used was borrowed because Church Street Ministries truck
needs a new starter. Your well timed generosity will be put
to good use.
Berea Summer Lunch Program: Thank You to all our Volun-
teers, who teamed up the week of July 15th to make sure
that no child or teen goes hungry over the summer months.
More than 40 volunteers gathered each day to make & dis-
tribute lunches - thanks to all the parishioners that donated
food items or a financial contribution.
The City of Berea needs volunteer drivers for our
Dinner to Your Door program, which serves sen-
iors, disabled and shut in residents well-balanced
dinners. We have 40 residents of Berea, Brook
Park and Middleburg Heights who receive these
meals on a daily/weekly basis. The meals are pro-
vided by Catering on Call and delivered to Berea
Community Outreach (Smith Elementary School,
535 Wyleswood Drive) on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays. Volunteers can pick up the meals by
2:00pm and drop them off at the residents home.
The routes have about five deliveries, depending
on the area, and usually take less than 45 minutes
to complete. Please contact Natalie Guzzo at
Berea Community Outreach (440) 826-4891 or
[email protected] if you are interested in volun-
teering.
