Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 4, 2018
Have you ever felt hopeless, like Job in today’s First Reading? Job laments
the horrible events that have befallen him and he succumbs to despair.
Later in the book, Job, will argue with God and only then come to under-
stand the mystery of suffering. Job continued to turn to God, even when
he felt he would not see happiness again.
Jesus spent himself healing and teaching people in today’s Gospel,
yet he likewise turned to God. He took time to pray and felt free not to f e e l
forced into service when he heard, “Everyone is looking for you.” Prayer strengthened him to move on and
continue his mission to preach and manifest God’s presence in his works.
Both Jesus and Job found freedom in their relationship with God. Jesus remained faithful to his mission,
even when people wanted him to remain with them.
Paul’s relationship with God freed him to preach the Gospel by becoming all things to all people. Cen-
tered in his relationship with
Jesus, Paul discovered how
to live Jesus in every situa-
tion he encountered.
Maybe we don’t need to get
up super early every morning
to pray (or maybe we do),
but we do need to make and
take the time for prayer.
Even a short amount goes a
long way. In prayer we find
that God is present in our
midst (the Christmas promise –God-with-us). In prayer we discover true freedom, as Job, Paul and Jesus did.
To pray is to speak to God and listen for God’s voice in order to breathe as
one with God. So, take a deep breath. There is God. Exhale. Release anxiety, hope-
lessness, or a feeling of pressure. Repeat. Breathe deeply and be centered in the One
who is the source of our freedom. Breathe deeply and be centered in the One who
gives us hope and empowers us to respond to every situation we meet in our lives.
What a WONDERFUL Catholic Schools Week! Did you take the time to see
our investment? Our students stepped up and through the various education platforms excelled in Science, Tech-
nology, Engineering, Art and Math! The recent Discovery Hall has every student EXCITED about education and
the Open House, Science Fair, Art Show, and even the Dance were so well received! THANKS to our Principal.
Administrators, Teachers, Faculty, Staff, Parents and Students for making St. Mary School a WONDERFUL place
to come to know and love the Lord!
THANK YOU for your faithfulness and generosity in the Sunday Collection! Grateful LIVING!
Fr. John

In Your Charity
In your charity, please remember the
repose of the souls of Dick Hultquist,
Lydia McMillan, and Agnes Bucciere.
May they rest in eternal peace.
Mass Intentions for 2018
The Mass Intention Book for 2018 is open
for your Intentions.
Contact the Office to schedule or submit
your request in writing - please include a
phone number in case we need to contact you. We will
do our best to accommodate your requests.
Communion Distribution
During the winter months of January, Feb-
ruary and March, Communion will be dis-
tributed under one species, that of the Body
of Christ. We will suspend the distribution
of the Blood of Christ as a precaution dur-
ing the flu season. Thank you for your understanding.
The gifts of Bread and Wine offered at Sunday Mass
become the very Body and Blood of Christ. It is a joy to
present these gifts to the Priest as a sign and symbol of the
gifts the community offers – that of
their mind, heart and spirit.
We would like to ENCOUR-
AGE the FAMILY of those for whom
the Mass is being offered to PRESENT
the gifts, after the collection has been taken up.
PLEASE, make yourself KNOWN to the Usher well
before Mass begins, so that due honor of your loved ones can
be made. THANK YOU.

“Pray while you work”
You should spend at least half an hour in
the morning and an hour at night in
prayer. You can pray while you work.
Work doesn’t stop prayer, and prayer
doesn’t stop work. It requires only that
small raising of mind to Him “I love You,
God, I trust You, I believe in You, I need
You now.” Small thinks like that. They
are wonderful prayers.

Family Perspective
Today’s gospel shows us how Jesus modeled the
Rhythm of work and prayer. Jesus knew that this time
of “retreat” was necessary if He was to minister to the
needs of others. How true this model of prayer is for
married couples. Couples who regularly pray together
report having happier, stronger marriages and are bet-
ter able to meet their parenting and work responsibili-
ties. How do you pray as a couple?

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes
By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy
HEALING SONG
This weekend’s readings are all about the healing power
of God. Here on earth, we are restless as we wait for
him to soothe our human weaknesses. God is always
here, giving us freely his grace for us in our physical,
emotional, and spiritual needs. Music can also be a
source of healing. There is actually an scientifically
studied and evidence-based form of medical practice
called Music Therapy that is used to help emotional and
neurological needs to further help the patient. This type
of music needs a degree to be considered clinical, but
we can find our own solace in music in our own situa-
tions.
Have you ever been stressed out, and felt better after
listening to one of your favorite sacred songs? God has
given us the gift of music to delight and rehabilitate all
who are there to listen. There’s a reason that I pick such
specific hymns for each week! Take care to resonate
with the lyrics of the music you sing as well as you con-
nect with the scripture in the Bible.
Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to
rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir
also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are inter-
ested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring,
or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see
Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music

Educating the Mind, Nurturing the Soul
Mr. Andrew J. Carner, Principal
We were very fortunate this past Sunday to be blessed
with a beautiful winter day for our Annual Open House. We
would like to thank all of the parishioners, current and new
families that took time to stop in to tour the school, talk with
the school Administrators, and meet with the classroom
teachers. If you happened to miss our Open House, and
would like to see first-hand what’s happening at St. Mary
School, please call 440.243.4555, to arrange a personal tour.
