Saint Joseph Parish TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not

have a prominent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monastic communities often protect the ancient value of “receiving from the same sacrifice,” meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Communion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you attend.

At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably prepared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the “sacrifice,” the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest’s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a “Bethlehem.”

Today’s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from “bready” bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual “Easter duty” counts easier. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Adult Faith Enrichment Program – Upcoming Bible Study: “ACTS-The Spread of the Kingdom” featuring Jeff Cavins

Join us on Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00pm in the Msgr. O’Connor Social Hall St. Mary’s Room for video, fellowship, and small group discussion.

Dates: May 10—June 28 & August 30—November 15, 2017. In this study, we will witness how the Gospel spread outward in waves, from Jerusalem to Judea and

Samaria, and finally to the ends of the earth. Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living the life of Christ, and learn how these apply to us today. Observe the way the Spirit-filled Church adapted to new cultures when proclaiming the Gospel. Watch the seeds of Church structure and authority take root, and see how conflicts were resolved even at that early stage. See your place in Christ’s Church, and how you should live day-to-day as a disciple of Christ.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations May 8, 2017, is Wor ld Day of Prayer for

Vocations. Please take time on that day to say a special prayer with your family that there will be an increase in Vocations in our church.

Loving God, you speak to us and nourish us through the life of the church community.

In the name of Jesus, we ask you to send Your Spirit to us so that men and women among us,

young and old, will respond to Your call to service and leadership in the church.

We pray, especially, in our day, for those who hear Your invitation to be a priest, sister,

brother, or deacon. May those who are opening their hearts and minds to Your call be

encouraged and strengthened through our enthusiasm in your service. Amen.

Did You Get the E-Mail??? On April 5th I sent an SVdP wide e-mail.

This is a periodic attempt to insure all our parishioners with an e-mail account can be notified of important issues. If you did not receive it we probably don’t have your e-mail address in our record, or it is an invalid address. Mass e-mails are few and far between, but it does provide a quick and additional method of communicating important happenings and events. If you didn’t receive the e-mail just send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I’ll update the record. If you don’t want to receive mass e-mails or emails regarding a specific subject just let me know and I’ll code your record accordingly. Ruth
