No chocolate, no alcohol, no meat on Fridays. Yet here, only in the second week of Lent, we have the story of the transfiguration. This reading reminds us of the "why" behind what we do. We don't fast from dessert to lose weight. We don't donate money or serve others because it's merely a nice thing to do. Lent is about transformation! Peter, James, and John trudged up the mountain- side behind Jesus. This must have been a difficult hike, because when they reached the top, "Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep." Despite our best efforts, perhaps we, too, can be asleep to the deeper meaning of the Lenten season. Jesus is transfigured while they slumber, but eventually they become "fully awake, [and] they saw his glory and the two men standing with him." This is no small thing! The disciples witness Jesus in his divine splendor and see the miraculous apparitions of Moses and Elijah. The entire mountain becomes a spiritual breakthrough. "A cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud." These symbols are present in the Old Testament. They are present on Mount Sinai when Moses prayed alone and received the 10 Commandments. Elijah had a similar experience when he prayed alone before God. But here are ordinary men, former fishermen, who have been drawn up into an adventure beyond their wildest expectations. Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the fulfillment of all that came before. But Christianity is not the religion of the elite, where only the select few are allowed to participate. We are all invited into spiritual transformation. Lent is a privileged time for this! © LPi Steven Reber May the Angels lead you into Paradise

Resources for Mental Health Research is helping us become increasingly aware that mental health concerns are a normal part of life. “Mental illness is real, common, and treatable.” Just as we would naturally call upon a doctor if our arm were broken, so we should call for assistance if we experience uncomfortable symptoms of depression or anxiety that might include feeling down, lacking energy, feeling nervous or easily excitable, having moments of panic, concern that we are drinking too much, or being unable to sleep well. These things do not reveal personal failure. Rather, they are symptoms common to challenges in life. Please keep in mind the many resources available in our communities. For example, Community Adult Mental Health Initiative which serves Benton, Sherburne, Stearns, and Wright Counties. Information is available on the web at www.mnmentalhealth.org and a crisis response team is available at 800-635-8008 or 32-253-5555. In our region we have suicide hotlines, sexual assault centers, a crisis text line, county agencies, behavior health hospitals, counseling and psychiatric services, emergency shelters, chemical dependency treatment centers, housing resources, and more. We should all know that we are never alone in moments of crisis. There are also skills available for suicide prevention. QPR, a play on CPR, is a clever acronym for “Question. Persuade. Refer.” It encourages us to recognize that suicidal thoughts are often passing. If we can recognize signs there is a possibility to listen deeply, equip with hope and practical resources, so that tragedy might be prevented. Warming signs of suicide include:

Suicide threats Previous suicide attempts Alcohol and drug abuse

Statements revealing a desire to die Sudden changes in behavior

Prolonged depression Making final arrangements

Giving away prized possessions Purchasing a gun or stockpiling pills

The doors of the church are also open anyone who feels overwhelmed with life. Please feel free to call me (Fr. Edward) on my cell phone 320-492-6877 if you ever feel that life is out of control or burdensome. May God keep us all in sound health of body and mind. But, when we experience dark moments, we should know that we are never alone. Scripture Quote from the Day—Psalm 27:1,14

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?

The LORD is my life's refuge; of whom should I be afraid?

I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living.

Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.

Fr. Edward

Prayer | Fasting | Almsgiving Prayer: Throughout Scripture, Jesus goes to pray in deserted place. Lent is our "deserted place." We draw near to God through Mass, confession, and spiritual practices like the Stations of the Cross, but we are also invited to spend time in prayer alone with the Father like Jesus did. Fasting: Fasting is not a diet! With a diet, we try to achieve a physical goal in this world. In fasting, we try to achieve a spiritual goal in the next. Fasting helps us to sacrifice our preferences and less-than-healthy impulses to build discipline to choose the good in all areas of life. Almsgiving: Time and time again, the Bible tells us that to love God we must love others. Our "neighbor" is someone we might not expect. Giving alms is an opportunity to support and care for our neighbor in need.
