Grace and St. Joseph Last December, Pope Francis named the Year of St. Joseph. The Year of St. Joseph will go from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. When the Holy Father made this announcement, he included with it a number of ways to gain a plenary indulgence during this special year. This is a great opportunity to receive everything that is being offered to us this year. The Catechism of the Catholic Church includes a section on indulgences. Here is the Catechism’s explanation of an indulgence: "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints." (CCC 1471) Indulgences have been a devotion for many Catholics throughout the centuries. They are an act of charity, especially when gained for the deceased. Though for a time indulgences were not emphasized, the Church has always upheld the practice. The indulgences attached to this year include devotions to St. Joseph. As universal patron of the Church, we all have a connection to this great saint. As he was the father figure for Jesus, so St. Joseph can be a spiritual father to us, whether as a role model or as a source of support. I have included an insert into the bulletin with such a devotional. In the Litany of St. Joseph, we invoke St. Joseph by his many titles and virtuous attributes. On the back, I have included the other opportunities to gain an indulgence this year. I have also included the necessary conditions for gaining an indulgence. This year as we practice these devotionals, we can grow in devotion to St. Joseph. We can recognize the great role that he has in the Church and in our lives. In Christ, Fr. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: We are looking forward to seeing the Religious Education students in-person for classes on Wednesday, January 20! In commemoration of the 48th anniversary of Roe v Wade, go to www.formed.org and watch Angel in the Waters. This is a beautiful book, presented as a 9-minute video, about a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb and talking with the angel who is there. The gentle illustrations and wise words tell the story of that baby and angel in the waters…a story that will delight young children, because the journey from conception to birth is their story, too. This book is a beautiful way to teach young children the sanctity of life from the moment of conception. Consider purchasing a hard copy of this book from your favorite bookseller. ROSARY LEADERS: Prior to COVID shutdowns, the rosary was prayed before the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays. We would like to return to praying the rosary on Sundays as a faith community and are looking for volunteers to lead on a rotating schedule. If you usually attend Mass on Saturday evenings, we would love to get volunteers to lead the rosary before that Mass, too. To volunteer or for more information, contact Sue Mielke at [email protected] or 320-864-5162.

2021 CALENDARS: Calendars have been ordered and should be here within 5-10 days. An announcement in the bulletin and in church will be made when they arrive. Thank you to Rite Way Conveyors, Inc. for purchasing the calendars.

Please remember that masks are required to attend any Mass unless you are unable to do so due to an underlying health condition. We also need to continue to “social distance”.

Best of all, every penny of every ticket sold stays at Holy Trinity School thanks to the Raffle’s sole sponsor Catholic United Financial. The St. Paul-based company provides all the prizes and promotion materials for the Raffle at no cost to the participating schools.

“Catholic United’s mission since our founding 143 years ago has included supporting Catholic education, and we couldn’t be happier or prouder to support our schools with the Catholic Schools Raffle,” explained Catholic United President Mike Ahles. “Since the program started, we have invested over one million dollars in the Raffle because we understand how this unique fundraiser greatly benefits the students and their teachers.”

Now in its twelfth year, the Catholic Schools Raffle has raised over $9.5 million for Catholic schools in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This year, Catholic United is challenging the 82 participating schools to collectively raise $1 million during the six week selling period. To help reach this goal, Holy Trinity School hopes to sell enough tickets to raise $17000. The money raised allows schools like Holy Trinity School to provide tuition assistance, update technology systems, or to cover the cost of special learning opportunities like guest speakers and field trips.

Ticket sales begin January 15 and run thru February 28. Tickets are only available at participating schools. The Grand Prize drawing ceremony takes place at 11:00 a.m. (CST) on Thursday, March 11 at the Catholic United Financial Home Office in St. Paul, MN. Raffle updates and a full list of participating schools can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CatholicSchoolsRaffle.

Please support Holy Trinity School by participating in the annual Catholic Schools Raffle. Students will be available at our three parishes for many of the weekend Masses starting this weekend through February. Thank you for your support!

  • Area Faith Community News COVID Restrictions: As numbers of COVID cases in McLeod County continue to be high, and in obedience to what the governor has asked of us, I am asking that all attending Mass or using our church continue to wear masks. The constant teaching of the church has been that we must be obedient to the legitimate civil authorities. St. Peter himself teaches this: "Be subject to every human institution for the Lord's sake, whether it be to the king as supreme or to governors as sent by him..." You can find the whole section in 1 Peter 2:13-17. It's important for us to remember that this text was written not during a time when the state authorities were sympathetic to Christians but rather in a period of Christian persecution. The only time that our Church has taught that we must disobey the civil authority is when they ask us to do something objectively immoral (hence the reason why thousands of Christians down through the century have gone to their deaths by refusing to blaspheme or trample on an image of Christ or Mary). In fact, obedience to the legitimate civil authority was considered by the early Christians to be a form of Christian witness -- a way to communicate to non-Christians that one can be a good citizen and a follower of Christ.

COVID Vaccine: I've received a number of emails and questions about the COVID vaccine and whether Catholics can morally receive the vaccine. A useful document written by the US Bishops on this question was published on December 11 and can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/moral-considerations-covid-vaccines. In summary the document states that, while Catholics are obliged to avoid taking vaccines derived from cells from aborted children, neither the Pfizer nor Moderna COVID vaccines used morally compromised cell lines in their design, development, or production. The AstraZeneca vaccine did use a morally compromise cell line in its design, development, and production. If possible, the bishops encourage Catholics to avoid taking this third vaccine. However, the bishops say that a vulnerable person, such as someone with severe health problems or advanced age could even take this vaccine that is morally compromised if an alternative is not available. The bishops express the importance of vaccination as not only a good for the person receiving the vaccine but also a good for those with whom that person is in contact.

MASK WEARING AT MASSES: I have received a number of calls this week from people concerned about the spread of the virus and with people not wearing masks at Mass. Some have told me that they are not coming to church specifically for this reason. Because of the very high numbers of known COVID-positive tests in our communities, it seems to me really important for the sake of public health (and for the peace of those in attendance) that we wear masks at Mass until we are instructed that we no longer need to do so.

TO KEEP OUR PARISH STAFF SAFE, please consider calling the parish offices instead of stopping by in-person. Please wear a mask if you do need to come to the parish office. I am encouraging our parish staff to work remotely from home as much as possible until at least Christmas. This will affect their ability to return voicemail messages in a timely manner. Thank you for your patience.

FORMED.ORG PICK OF THE WEEK: This week, as we commemorate the 48th anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision, watch the video, Changing Sides: How a Pro-Life Presence Changed the Heart of a Planned Parenthood Director. This film tells the powerful true story of the conversion of Abby Johnson, a dedicated Planned Parenthood director, to a leading Pro-Life activist. Find out what happens when people pray, fast, sacrifice, love their enemies and take a stand on the most controversial issues of our time—abortion. If you are a reader, look for Abby’s book, Unplanned, at your library or favorite bookseller. Another great choice for this week is the audio recording, Feminism Misunderstood: One Woman’s Journey to Peace. Jane Brennan, a former member of NOW and former Planned Parenthood volunteer, shares her heart-wrenching story of abortion and subsequent years of depression, resulting in her eventual conversion to the Catholic Church. If you don’t have a Formed membership, go to www.formed.org and click on “Sign Up,” then “Sign Up as a Parishioner.” Type in “Glencoe, MN” and you’ll see “Saint John Paul II AFC”

ATTENTION COLLEGE STUDENTS: What are you doing with your summer? How about being a Totus Tuus missionary? Totus Tuus (Latin for “totally yours”) is a program of the Diocese of New Ulm that gathers college students into teams of four and sends them out to parishes to spread the faith through catechesis, songs, games, skits, and the sacraments. It combines faith and fun! If you are looking for a meaningful summer experience, look no further—Totus Tuus is life changing. This is a paid summer job, but the rewards are eternal. Visit www.dnu.org/totus-tuus-missionary for more info.
