Mass Intentions
Second Collection this week is for Catholic Relief Services
Lift Up Your Hearts Celebrating Pentecost this Sunday we remind ourselves of the surprising effects of the Holy Spirit’s gifts. The sending of the Promise of the Father, as Jesus called the Spirit, compelled the fishermen of Galilee to begin their work as Apostles of the Lord. They went out from the Upper Room of Jerusalem into the city and the world carrying the Gospel of Jesus’ reconciling Passion, Death and Resurrection.
I am struck by this detail: that those who heard the Apostles preach “each heard them speaking in his own language,” even though they came from many different nations. Perhaps this image of the Church at its birth and of the Spirit at work in them will help us to consider our own situation. We are living in a moment when it is clear that the Lord has called us to undertake a ‘New Evangelization.’ We must proclaim the Gospel and speak of “the mighty acts of God” to people of many different backgrounds and experiences. I propose that each disciple is uniquely qualified to speak to others in the ‘language’ of our own life’s experience. Some might not resonate with or understand the way in which one proclaims the Gospel. Surely others will recognize when someone is ‘speaking their language;’ and may be thrilled to realize that God would come to meet them in the midst of their lives.
I firmly believe that the same Spirit which fell on those in the Upper Room at Pentecost remains in our midst, and that He gifts us, transforms us and sends us to continue the work begun in Jerusalem. Taking leave of our gathering in the ‘Upper Room’ at Mass this Sunday, let’s remind ourselves to remain open to the work and presence of the Holy Spirit, and not to be timid in speaking out of what the Lord has done for us.

A new face at Saint Joan of Arc Parish…
I am happy to welcome Marcella Lantzman to the Saint Joan of Arc Parish Office as our new parish Administrative Assistant. Marcella is a parishioner at Saint Louise de Marillac, and has worked as sacristan there for the past 4 years. She is absolutely devoted to the work of building up the Church, and will very readily share her talents in working with our parish staff to serve the parishioners of Saint Joan of Arc.
I am also very grateful that our parishioner, Nancy Matter, has graciously agreed to expand her hours working in the parish office as Secretary. Both Nancy and Marcella (with some continued help from the office staff at Saint Louise parish) will keep our parish office running well, and will provide a warm welcome to both parishioners and visitors.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Joe

Don’t let your child become a statistic! 80% of kids stop practicing the faith at some point during college. There is a way to keep our kids (grandkids) connected to the faith. Go to www.diopitt.org/ newmanconnection and fill out the quick online form. We only need their first and last name and the school they will be attending. A Catholic campus minister at their college will be able to reach out to them and invite them to participate in campus ministry. It takes less than 2 minutes to do and it might be the most important thing you do for your loved one as they graduate high school.

Words cannot express how thankful we are for all the thoughts and prayers from our Saint Joan of Arc Family for our son Mark who was battling cancer. Because of your prayers our son is now ‘cancer free’. But, due to our ill health, we are moving to Country Meadows. We will truly miss our wonderful friends at Saint Joan of Arc.
Thank you, and God Bless You! Joe and Roz Blice
Receive the Holy Spirit – After his resurrection from the dead Jesus appears to his anxious Apostles and, knowing their fear and uncertainty, pours forth the Holy Spirit upon them and bestows the gift of peace. For the
next forty days he promises that he will be with them always and that he will send the Advocate to be with them as they will be called to continue his work in the world. Finally, after ascending to heaven, Jesus sends forth his Spirit at Pentecost to fill the Apostles with confidence and courage in order to go out to all the world to tell the good news and grow the Church. As the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative continues to unfold we are called to prayer for a new Pentecost in the Church of Pittsburgh. This new outpouring of the Holy Spirit can bestow the peace we seek in the midst of change and planning for the future. God’s Spirit can also fill us with the confidence and courage that all of us – clergy and faithful alike – will need to do our part to build up the Church and make it ever more alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
