Material: Yarn: 2.5 skeins medium fingering weight sock yarn from Dyed in the Wool Handmade, one skein = 378yds; shawl used 875yds Needle: 4mm circular needle, 120cm long (47”), for picot edge pointy needles are a bonus to work with 4 place markers Darning needle Pins and/or rods for blocking Gauge: 17 sts x 32 rows for 4” x 4”; Size after blocking: 80” x 45” Abbeviations: CO = cast on BO = bind off PM = place marker RS = right side WS = wrong side st, sts = stitch, stitches YO = yarn over K2tbl = Knit 2 stitches through the back loop RT = right twisted stitches: knit second stitch first, leave it on left needle, knit first stitch, slide both stitches to right needle Kfb = Knit in the front of one stitch and in the back of the same stitch, move stitch to the right, one stitch increased. K2tog = knit 2 stitches together SKP = slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over Sl2,K1,P2SSO = slip 2 as if to knit, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over

Mohana Shawl

Please read through the whole pattern before you start knitting!

Material: Yarn: 2.5 skeins medium fingering weight sock yarn from Dyed in the Wool Handmade, one skein =

378yds; shawl used 875yds

Needle: 4mm circular needle, 120cm long (47”), for picot edge pointy needles are a bonus to work with

4 place markers

Darning needlePins and/or rods for blocking

Gauge: 17 sts x 32 rows for 4” x 4”; Size after blocking: 80” x 45”

Abbeviations:CO = cast on

BO = bind off 

PM = place marker

RS = right side

WS = wrong side

st, sts = stitch, stitches

YO = yarn over

K2tbl = Knit 2 stitches through the back loop

RT = right twisted stitches: knit second stitch first, leave it on left needle, knit first stitch, slide both stitches

to right needle

Kfb = Knit in the front of one stitch and in the back of the same stitch, move stitch to the right, one stitch

Center stitches throughout the shawl: there are TWO center stitches in this shawl

Knit center stitches as followed throughout the shawl:

Row 1: K2tbl

Row 2: purlRow 3: RT

Row 4: purlRepeat those four rows.

The two edge stitches at the beginning and end of each row are knit in garter stitch

throughout.

Cast on: CO 6 stitches; knit 2 rows

Row 3: RS: K1, Kfb, K2, Kfb, K1. TurnRow 4: WS: K2, P4, K2

Row 5: K2, PM, YO, K1, YO, PM, K2tbl, PM, YO, K1, YO, PM, K2.Row 6: K2, PM, P3, PM, P2, PM, P3, PM, K2.Row 7: K2, PM, YO, K3, YO, PM, RT, PM, YO, K3, YO, PM, K2.

Row 8: K2, PM, P5, PM, P2, PM, P5, PM, K2.

Repeat rows 9 to 16 from chart A, until you have 71 stitches (= row 73) between youredge markers and center stitch markers. (total on needle is 148 sts) adding pattern repeats,

as stitches come available.

Transition row:Next row: RS: K2, PM, YO, knit to next marker, YO, PM, RT, PM, YO, knit to next

marker, YO, PM, K2.

Set up row: WS: K2, PM, [K1, P5] repeat to next marker ending with K1, PM, P2, PM,

K1, [P5, K1] repeat to marker, PM, K2.

Start knitting Chart B:

Knit 8 row/12 sts pattern repeat - 9 times. Adding stitch pattern as stitches comeavailable.

Next rows: Knit row 1 and 2 of 8 row stitch pattern ONCE.Knit rows 3 and 4 FOUR times. Next, knit rows 11 to 16 ONCE.

Start knitting Chart C:

Row 1 of Chart C: K2, PM, YO, K1, [YO, Sl1-k2tog-PSSO, YO, K3] repeat 25 times,

Sl1-k2tog-PSSO,YO, K1, YO, PM, center stitches, PM, YO, K1, YO, [K3, YO, Sl1-

k2tog-PSSO, YO] repeat 25 times, end with K1, YO, PM, K2. You should have 27“clusters” on each side of the shawl.

Row 2 of Chart C: WS: K2, PM, Purl to marker, PM, center stitches, PM, purl to

marker, PM, K2.

Following rows see Chart C.

Repeat 4 row/6 stitch pattern - 6.5 times (26 rows). It should be 13 “clusters” high.

(Chart shows 6 “clusters” high.)

Next: Knit 5 garter ridges (10 rows), keeping center stitches in pattern. Keep increasing

stitches with a YO at the edges, and before the center stitches, as before.

Bind Off edge: Crown picot edge: This kind of edge uses up a lot of yarn, and will test

your patience.

Crown picot: First stitch: * cast on 2 sts, cast off 2 sts (= 1 picot), transfer stitch back toleft needle * repeat from * to * 3 more times (= 4 picots). Knit and cast off 4 stitches.

This is one crown with 4 picots. Repeat this until you are 2 sts before next marker,remove marker, bind off 3 sts this time, make crown, bind off 3 sts, make crown, bind off 4 stitches, repeat to end of row.

Weave in ends.

Block wet.
