Feb. 16th to 24th

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019 “Blessed are you who are poor,

for the kingdom of God is yours.

Blessed are you who are now hungry,

for you will be satisfied.”

— Luke 6:20‑21a

BLESSED When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jere-miah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Fol-lowing his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ pro-claims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short remind-ers about the characteristics that one will find in a fol-lower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ADA As we look at our lives and the many ways God has blessed us, let us give back a portion to the Annual Dioc-esan Appeal as a way of saying thank you to the Lord. If you have yet to make your pledge to our parishes annual support of the Diocese, please consider doing it to-day. Pledge forms are in the pews and brochures can be found in the vestibule and at the back table by the Pope’s picture. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

As you know, SFC has provided services as an evening shelter within the Village House program for the last 3 years. In addition to the evening shelters, the program also provides warming shelters during the day. One of the day shelters who has partnered with the pro-gram is Good Samaritan Episcopal (GSE) church located at the corner of Union Avenue and Highway 85. This year, GSE has reached out to SFC to request volunteers support for their day shelter. GSE has daily volunteer opportunities, Sunday through Wednesday in 4-

hour increments beginning at 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. They need volunteers to support a total of six 4 hour volunteer shifts each day, 7:00 am to 11:00 am, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, again, Sunday through Wednesday. Good Samaritan Episcopal needs our help. Those of you who are unable to support the evening shelter at SFC may find volunteer opportunities during the day at GSE. Please take a moment this week to identify days and times you can volunteer. Instructions on how to volunteer via sig-nup.com will be announced in the coming days. Once available, instructions will also be found on our website as well as the Village House website, https://www.villagehousesccca.com/day-shelters.html.

The Parish Office will be closed on Feb. 17th in observance of Presidents’ Day.
