ST. CECILIA, Virgin and Martyr November 22—Patroness of Musicians

Page 6 November 22, 2015 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

My dear parishioners, As we gather to commemorate the Lord’s Day we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which is the last Sunday of the 2015 liturgical year. In the Gospel we are taken back to the events of Good Friday and the dialogue between Our Lord and Pontius Pilate. When asked if He is a king, Jesus responds, “My kingdom does not belong to this world.” Yes, the Lord Jesus is the king of heaven and

earth who came to invite all into His kingdom so that they might have eternal life. The portal by which one enters this kingdom is the holy sacrament of baptism. This is the mystery by which we become members of the kingdom on earth as well as future heirs/heiresses of the eternal kingdom in heaven. Our citizenship unites us to Christ and to one another in a bond of love which has power over death as a result of Jesus’ Holy Resurrection. Christ’s love for us was manifested when Pilate sentenced Him to execution on the cross. His suffering and death have given rise to new life with Him. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Ro-mans wrote: “Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed bur-ied with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.”(6:3-4) This is a glorious day for our parish community as we welcome our Bishop, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Arthur Serratelli for the blessing of our new baptismal space in the nave of the church. It will be from this place that new life will spring forth from the waters of baptism and it will be from this same place that the newly departed of our community will be welcomed for the final time. Yes, as we read from Saint Paul, baptism and death are united in Christ Jesus our Lord who leads us into eternal life. Being November 22nd we celebrate the FEAST DAY OF OUR PATRONESS, SAINT CECILIA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR. What better day can be chosen to bless such as special place in our church and so we say with the Psalmist, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice!” It is with profound joy that we dedicate our baptismal area in blessed memory, Stella and Martin M. Mackin. May they have eternal rest and be counted among the saints in the heavenly Jerusalem. The entire project which consisted of altering the pews, refurbishing the baptismal font, the purchase of a new ambry and paschal candle stand were all included within the memorial gift to our parish. This afternoon our Vietnamese community will celebrate the Feast of Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and His Companions, Martyrs of Vietnam (November 24th). As Thanksgiving draws near you are invited to attend a community Thanksgiving service tonight at the First Presbyterian Church beginning at 7 o’clock. Please join us for the celebration of the Holy Mass on Thursday, Thanks-giving morning at 9 o’clock. Bread will be blessed and distributed to the faithful as an addition to your Thanksgiving table. There is so much to thank God for! I thank Him for giving you to me!! God bless you, Father Zig

According to her legendary Acts, Cecilia made a vow of virginity, but her parents forced her to marry a nobleman named Valerian. She converted him to the Faith of Christ, and, by the Provi-dence of God, preserved her virginity. She also converted Tiburtius, the brother of Valerian. Both these men suffered martyrdom for the Faith, and St. Cecilia died the same glorious death a few days after. Their death occurred probably in the reign of Marcus Aurelius or of Commodus, between the years 161 and 192. The name of St. Cecilia has always been most illustrious in the Church and since the primitive Mass (First Eucharistic Prayer). She is honored as the patroness of ecclesiastical music. PRAYER: Lord, hear our requests. Through the intercession of Cecilia, please grant what we ask. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
