BISHOP BARRON BOOK – 50 copies of the recent book

by Bishop Robert Barron entitled, “Letter to a Suffering

Church,” have been placed in the church vestibule for your

Los Angeles, wrote this book for all Catholics suffering from

the fallout of the clergy abuse scandal. The book is informa-

tive, consoling and encouraging. Please take a copy and

when you are finished reading it please return it to the vesti-

bule for someone else to read.

CEMETERY BENCHES – I am happy to report that the

appeal for donors to memorialize two benches which have

been ordered for the parish cemetery columbarium has been

met. Giving me much hope is that I have had a least 5 others

come forward seeking to make the donation for a bench

which costs $1,600. Further information regarding the instil-

lation of the granite benches at the columbarium and their

dedication will be forth coming in the bulletin. Please know

that other memorials will be announced in the bulletin and

your generosity is a sign of both your love and faith! – Father

Zig

CHURCH ROOF UPDATE – I have been in contact with

the Arthur Vincent Company and our diocesan architect who

recommended that at this time a cross not be placed on top of

the cupola due to the winds which may cause movement of

the cupola and perhaps another leak in a rain storm. It was

suggested that the cross project we reconsidered at the time

when a new roof will be required for the church so that at the

time the cupola will be more firmly mounted to the roof

through reinforcements. As a result of this information the

project of the mounting of a cross on the cupola will be post-

poned until that time. I am told that the scaffolding will be

coming down from the roof shortly and that work of repoint-

ing and repairing the chimney on the church roof will begin.

I would like to thank all those who have made donations to

this project. Your generosity is an inspiration to me! – Father

Zig

RESPECT LIFE CORNER

About the New Jersey Safe Haven Law:

Why are states offering Safe Haven Laws? The purpose of Safe Haven is to

protect unwanted babies from being hurt or killed because they were aban-

doned. You may have heard tragic stories of babies left in dumpsters or public toilets. The parents who committed these acts may have been under severe

emotional distress. The mothers may have hidden their pregnancies, fearful of

what would happen if their families found out. Because they were afraid and had nowhere to turn for help, they abandoned their babies.

Abandoning a baby puts the child in extreme danger. Too often, it results in

the child's death. It is also illegal, with severe consequences. But with Safe Haven, this tragedy doesn't ever have to happen again.

In New Jersey, no one ever has to abandon a child again.

Ann. Statutes 30:4C-15.7,8 You can leave your baby, up to 30 days old, at an emergency room of any

licensed hospital or at any state, county or municipal police station in New

Jersey. For more information see: http://safehaven.tv/states/newjersey/#info

ST. MARTHA was the sister of Mary and Lazarus with whom she lived at Bethany, a village two miles from Jerusalem, a little beyond Mount Olivet, now bearing the name of El’ Azaryth or Lazarich. The family, it appears, was of some importance in the country and, as is known from the Gospels, intensely devoted to Our Blessed Lord, Who was frequently their guest. Martha is the prototype of the busy housewife because of the incident narrated in the Gospel when she asked Christ to rebuke her sister who was sitting at His feet leaving all the work to her. Instead, she heard the sublime answer that Mary had chosen the good part. Again, it was Martha who at the death of her brother had Faith to declare that God would accomplish anything that Jesus willed, and she heard the words, “I am the Resurrection and the Life,” to which she replied with a magnificent act of Faith: “I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God.” Finally, Martha was serving at the table when Mary anointed Christ’s feet with precious nard. There is an untrustworthy Provencal legend that after our Lord’s Ascension St. Martha traveled to France with her brother and sister, and Lazarus became Bishop of Marseilles. In 1187, her alleged relics were discovered at Tarascon, France, and placed in a magnificent crypt in the collegiate church there. PRAYER Almighty, ever-living God, Your Son was a frequent Guest in St. Martha’s home. Through her intercession grant that we may faithfully minister to our brethren and merit to be received in Your heavenly home. Amen.

ST. MARTHA, Virgin July 29-Patroness of Cooks

My dear parishioners,

Today we mark the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time in our celebration of the Lord’s Day. The sisters, Saints Martha and Mary

of Bethany are the focus of today’s Gospel periscope in which the Lord Jesus gives direction as to the prominence of prayer

in our lives. The scene is quite familiar to many of us who have welcomed guests into our homes. We want to make sure that

all is just right to offer our guests a warm welcome. This requires work, the preparation just doesn’t happen on its own, some-

one has to do the labor. Martha is the industrious one who rolls up her sleeves, she’s task oriented but knows her limits and

requires some assistance in offering hospitality. Her sister Mary, on the other hand, finds that the work can wait and prefers to

be with Jesus. The Lord reminds Martha that spending quality time with Him is far better than getting anxious about tasks

which can be put on hold. SPENDING TIME WITH JESUS is what it is all about, it’s “the better part!”

Working every day is part of our life. In the Sacred Scriptures we find that working six days a week is to imitate God who

worked each day in creation. On the seventh day the Lord God rested from His labor and this became the Sabbath, the day we

too rest from our everyday tasks. The Sabbath is the day on which worship and praise of God is the highlight, no other activ-

ity is more important on this day. The seventh day, that is Saturday, is observed by our Jewish brothers and sisters as the Sab-

bath, a day free from work.

From the beginning of the Church the disciples of Jesus observed the Sabbath but also “the first day of the week,” Sunday,

because it was on this day that the Lord Jesus rose from the dead. With the distancing of the early Christians from the Jews

the observance of the Jewish Sabbath was no longer Christian practice. First and second century documents testify to the

Church’s celebration of the Lord’s Day on the first day of the week as becoming the Christian Sabbath. This is our day of

worshipping and praising the Lord, as well as our day of rest.

Unfortunately, Sunday is becoming less and less the day of worshipping and praising God, as well as a day of rest. Atten-

dance at Holy Mass has decreased significantly over the years. Sunday is a work day with no difference from any other day of

the week. “Spending time with Jesus” is a reality for only a few. In today’s Gospel Jesus is saying something very significant

to all of us, that is, there is nothing more important than spending time with Him. Let’s not forget that, even during these

summer months!

God bless you!
