Thanks! and Help!

Fr. Oscar will be retiring soon, Fr. Paul will be mov-ing to a new parish and we will be getting a new Pastor and a new Parochial Vicar on July 1st. But who really keeps the par-ish going and growing, besides our Lord of course? Our dedi-cated parishioners, that’s who. Priests come and go, as do parish staff members, but our active and dedicated parish vol-unteers remain and are the lifeblood of St. Athanasius. I was reminded of this fact several times over the past few weeks. Some examples follow.

I picked up the recent edition of the Valley Catholic newspaper and read that three of our dedicated parishioners received the Pope Pius X award on May 7th for their long-time service as catechists: Pat Papa for 40 years of service; Mary Anne Williams for 30 years of service; and Carol Wil-son for 25 years of service. Unfortunately Mary Anne recently moved out of our parish and I wonder who will step up and take her place as a Catechist, Eucharistic Minister and Lector?

I attended the Parish Pioneer’s Luncheon on May 18th and wrote about it in last week’s bulletin. Virtually all of the parishioners who attended have given countless volunteer hours to our parish over the past six decades but now, due to age or poor health, some of these folks can no longer actively serve in our parish ministries. I wonder who will hear God’s call and step up to take their places? I have had several interactions with our St. Vincent De Paul ministry volunteers recently due to requests from desperate individuals who came to the Parish Office in need of help. My interactions with these dedicated and compassion-ate volunteers, especially Beatrice, Jeannette, Len and Berna-dette, have reminded me what true Christian discipleship is all about. All those who volunteer with St. Vincent DePaul lead very busy lives, have loads of responsibilities, yet they have answered God’s call to serve the poor and needy with their time and talent - but they can’t do it alone. Our St. Vincent De Paul ministry needs more volunteers immediately – would you consider stepping up to help?

Due to the increasing cost of rent forcing parishion-ers to move out of Mountain View; the transitory nature of jobs in the tech workforce; aging and illness; all of our parish ministries are in need of more volunteers at this time. This includes our Catechetical ministry for children and teens, our Liturgical ministries (Altar Server, Lector, Eucharistic Minis-ter, Greeter, Usher, and Choir), our parish committees (Liturgy, Finance, Facilities, and Stewardship). We also need parishioners to help us maintain the church environment on a weekly basis by taking care of the plants and flowers and washing the altar linens.

God calls us all to be active in the life and work of this parish. Please consider stepping up and helping in what-ever capacity you can. You will make a difference! Please contact me and I can help you discern how you can best serve the parish. Training for whatever parish ministry you choose is provided. Finally, a big THANK YOU to our current and past parish volunteers! Without your generosity the parish would not be a spiritual home to those who seek to know and love the Lord and then carry that love out into the world.

Easter Season Blessings,

A Summer Bible Study!

Featuring the Little Rock Bible Study Format, Study Materials, and Videos

As a kind of second volume of Luke’s Gospel, Acts tells the story of the spread of the Gospel and the growth of the early church from its beginnings at Pentecost, following the ascension of Jesus. The Holy Spirit empowers the preaching of Peter, Paul, and the other disciples to take the faith from Jerusalem, to Judea, throughout Samaria and ultimately to the ends of the earth. It records the conversion of Paul and the momentous decision of the early church to welcome Gentiles as well as Jews into the church.

Join us for a fascinating journey into the life of the early church!
