Fast on the Negative and Feast on the Positive and Live Longer

As we come to the end of the 40 Days of Lent, there is one more fasting and feasting that may help us avoid heart prob-lem and prolong our life. It is fasting on being grumpy and feasting on being happy. We have heard of our Doc-tor's advice not to smoke, to eat right and to do exercise to avoid heart attack. But a new study published some years ago said that to be happy may also help to avoid heart attack. To be happy? Yes. Researchers at Columbia Uni-versity studied 1,700 adults in Canada within the period of ten years and found that happier people were less likely to have a heart problem. So even if you are grumpy by na-ture, just try to be cheerful. It reminds me of what St. Irae-neus said, "The glory of God is a person fully alive (happy)." Did not St. Paul also say that God loves the cheerful giver? We can even be a cheerful person and a happy camper as we drop our Sunday Offering in the basket or make our Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) Offering during worship, and as we help someone in real need. Dr. Karina Davidson, one leader of the research group from Columbia University said that even if you are not naturally a happy person, just try acting like one and it will help. The result is that you are 22 percent less likely to have a heart problem. Experts say that happiness could result in a healthier lifestyle. "Other ex-perts said that happiness could result in a healthier heart compared to other emotions such as stress or depression. Stress often releases hormones that can damage heart mus-cle." Another professor of health sciences in Sweden said that stress can also cause our blood vessels to open too wide, allowing plaque buildups to break off and clog the arteries causing heart attack. So include fasting on being grumpy and feasting on being happy in our Lenten devotion. Follow the example of Jesus himself who was "a remarka-bly cheerful person ...his joy, like his faith and hope, was infectious...the poor and the oppressed and anyone else (including the children) found his company a liberating ex-perience of sheer joy." (Jesus Before Christianity by Fr. A. Nolan). And then there is the Lenten Carbon Fast suggested some years ago. This originated in the Archdiocese of Washington reminding us all of a responsibility to be wise stewards of God's Creation. One suggestion was an interesting kind of fasting. It is fasting from impulse and unmindful shop-ping. It suggests to "Purchase more mindfully...(make) a 'Wallet Buddy' where your credit card can remind you of questions to ask yourself before buying (NewDream.org/walletbuddy2.pdf)." The questions are: Do I need this & do I need it now? Was it made sustainably? Were the work-ers who made it treated well? Does it have too much pack-aging? Is it worth the money? Every dollar I spend is a statement about the kind of world I want & the quality of life I value. Did you know? You can “rewire” your brain to be happy by simply recalling 3 things you’re grateful for every day for 21 days.

(Jesus Before Christianity por Rev. A. Nolan).
