———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK——— !! Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
! Here’s wishing all our Dads and Grandfathers,
Godfathers and Foster Fathers a very happy Father’s Day. We
ask God’s blessing on all of you, and upon all our fathers who
are passed on. On this Father’s Day, I want to reflect for a mo-
ment on the effect that fathers have on the faith-lives of their
children. We all know that one of the biggest challenges facing
the faith in the current era is that of children not making their
religion or their practice of the faith a priority in adulthood.
Here’s where a father’s influence can make a substantial differ-
ence. In the early years of life, probably up into middle-school,
it is the influence of the mom that has the most sway, by and
large, in the lives of children. But, when adolescence starts to
kick in and young people begin to assert their desire for inde-
pendence, the mother’s influence begins to wane. Nothing per-
sonal, moms, but kids just want to break free. So, for the early
years of life, it is the mom’s influence that has the most effect
on church attendance and the faith lives of our kids.
But, for the later teen years, on through the twenties
and into adulthood, one of the greatest influencing factors that
keeps young people interested in the faith and going to church
on a regular basis is the witness of the father, the strength of his
belief, and the importance he places on the role of faith and the
value of attending Mass weekly. All of this is subconscious, but
kids tend to see the role of the mother as dealing with the things
of childhood, while subconsciously, kids see the role and inter-
ests of the dad as having to do with the things of adulthood, and
if dads truly value their faith and take it seriously, kids are more
likely to do so into adulthood because, by all appearances, an
investment in faith equals what it means to be an adult. So, it’s
not so much that the dads preach and evangelize by words, but
if they take their faith seriously (and not fake it…kids learn a lot
of insincerity as well), kids are more likely, statistically, to do so
as well into their adult years. So, dad, don’t underestimate your
influence on the faith lives of your kids! And Happy Father’s
Day to all!!!
Father Michael

the Office of Family Life Education (A
Hope Appeal Agency)
It is interesting we call the first person of
the Trinity, Father. Our dads help us understand God as
Father in the way they love, protect, teach, discipline and
spend time with us. What an awesome responsibility, to be
the window through which children view God.
