Hopefully you know this, but you can transform an entire community through your home parish. It’s impossible to sum up what any parish does in the brief announcements after Mass or in a bulletin page. Yesterday, I spoke with a pastor at a local parish who said to me that it’s just not possible to communicate everything in such a brief forum. We spoke a bit about some the ways we have tried to keep people in touch here at St. Ambrose via electronic communications and social media. It’s really made a difference but, even with all that, it’s just not possible to communicate everything. I experienced that in a big way today (I’m writing this the evening of February 16th). This morning I came in around 8:30am. After dropping my things off in my office, I stopped by the Church to see people gathering for Mass at 9am. I connected with my friend Laureen (who was running both of our “Drawing Catholics Back to Church” parish conversation groups) as she prepared to make an announcement to the daily Mass community. Afterwards, I ran to grab a coffee cart with the new Keurig coffee maker donated by a couple of parishioners and prepared to sit down with the participants in the discussion group who discussed some real concrete ways we as parishioners can draw Catholics back to Church after being away for a while (also please check out the survey on page 4 to give your input as well!). As I snaked around the school, I watched our school principal Terri McGraw checking in with all the classes (she knows each of the students by name) and saw our food pantry hard at work as they brought food to those people in our community that could really use that extra help. In the office, we talked a bit about our parish family programs like our family Masses. I also spoke with a diocesan director of faith formation
from Little Rock, Arkansas who wanted to talk about some of the things that St. Ambrose tries to do to include families in everything we do. In the evening I once again wound my way through the school to our Parish Center, encountering our school’s Girl Scout troop as well as our local chapter of Alcoholic’s Anonymous. I also passed by the office of our parish counselor Dave Dubkowski. He was there but I didn’t see him because he was meeting with someone. Thankfully, people have been making good use of his work here at the parish. When I made it to the Parish Center, members of the parish staff had already begun setting up for our evening meeting with the Confirmation teens. Laureen was also back to lead the second session of the “Drawing Catholics Back to the Church” discussion. At 6:30pm volunteers began to arrive and by 7pm the teens were there too. Our session was about how you can make a difference through your parish. They discussed the struggles of teenagers in their schools as well as the problems in our communities. It was sobering hearing them talk about the problems they face with everything from drugs and violence to the grades and images of themselves they have to maintain among their families and peer groups. We tried to help them transform their worries and passions into positive action through what our parish does. Afterwards, our leaders discussed how to better minister to these teens as well as some brilliant ideas for serving the needy in our communities in the next couple of months. On my way back to my office I passed a group of men who get together weekly for basketball in our gym. That’s just one day here. People meet, things are planned, and lives are changed. Feel proud of your parish!

Working Together to Draw
Catholics Back to Church!
“Drawing Catholics Back to the Church” is a
parish discussion group that are looking at the
obstacles many of us face when friends, family
members, neighbors and co-workers drift away
from the Church. We will be meeting again soon
so please be on the lookout for our next meeting!
In the meantime, would you help us by
reflecting on the following questions?
You can:
• fill out a survey online by visiting: http://
stambroselatham.com/survey.
• e-mail your responses to Laureen at
• Fill out the following questions and drop them
off at the office.
• How can we better serve the families of
newly baptized children?
• How can we better serve people who are
preparing for a loved one's funeral?
• How can we better serve those attending
funerals who may not have been to Mass
in some time?
• What are some ways we can better serve
families with younger children? (current
examples: parish faith formation
programs, babysitting for a "parents night
out", weekend activities for kids,
sacramental preparation, young families
at Mass, etc.)
• How can we help people get and stay
connected with the parish? (ex: new
parishioners, older children who
disconnect from religious practice,
people who have don't feel "in the loop"
with what is going on in the parish, etc.)

This Lent, let’s go on a mission.
All of us.
Together.
This year, our Life Teen community is going to Abbeville, Louisiana to help rebuild a home.
We encourage you to pick up one of the empty coffee cups in the back of the Church.
When you can, feel free to drop your change into the cup. You can leave it in your car or leave it someplace at home as a reminder of our mission together.
As you fill the cups, bring them back to Mass. More details to follow.
Your loose change can help someone rebuild their life!

SACRISTAN MINISTRY Like altar serving, being a Sacristan is a very beneficial way to help out your church community, and an active way to partici-
pate in Mass. Sacristans perform the following duties:
• Setting up the church before Mass. Typically, sacristans arrive at church half hour before anyone
else. They light the candles, arrange the books, ready the linens and basically perform a little simple organizing before Mass begins.
• Prepare the Holy Eucharist for the celebration of the Mass. This includes readying the wine, water
and bread and putting them in place for the start of Mass.
• Coordinate all Mass participants, make sure Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and Altar Servers are ready.
• Cleaning the holy materials after Mass in the sacristy.
• Before the sacristan leaves the church everything is set back in its place and secured.
Decide if this is something you think you can do. Setting the table of the Lord is a ministry that is essential for the Mass. We are in need of sacristans for all Masses. Our schedules are flexible so after training you can let us know what Mass works for you. Our schedule is posted ahead several months at a time for your convenience. Please contact the Sacristan Coordinator Pat Rayball 708-9615
for more information.
