St. Aidan ! St. Patrick parish will be hosting a summer Vacation Bible Camp during the week of! August 610! from! 9am
11:30am.!The theme for the week is "Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus." We are excited to bring this program to the children of the parish but in order for it to be a success,!we need help. We need teen and adult volunteers to help with leading either the crafts, cinema, snack prep, or games. Also, we need help to decorate/setup a week before camp begins and to help break down/cleanup after the camp ends. We need camp counsellors! to facilitate children and transition them from station to station. We also need help with various materials for the week. In the church hall, a bulletin entitled "Be a LifeSaver" will have items which we are asking parishioners! to donate. By donating these items, it will help to keep the!registration fee low for families. For further information or questions please contact Darlyn at! faithformation@aidanpatrick.org!or 3335897 ext. 14. Thank you!!

This past week, I said Mass for Msgr. Patrick Canning who was
the pastor of St. Paul Church when I was born, and was the first
priest I served as an altar server. Msgr. Canning died in 1964 and
when I can, I offer Mass on his anniversary. This week however I
am thinking of how different my life as a pastor is from his.!
!
Back in the 1960’s there were four priests at St. Paul, along with
priests who were in residence. There were six Immaculate Heart
of Mary Religious at the Convent and the school had nine grades
with over 500 students. My first pastor had the priests and reli-
gious to assist in the running and operation of the parish. That is
perhaps the first and greatest difference between now and then.!
!
That is why I am very heartened by the fact that people are ask-
ing questions about our Open Parish Planning Meeting to be held
in the hall on Tuesday, June 19. I have received many and varied
questions about this meeting that illustrate not only the interest
that people have but also the awareness of how a parish today is
so much more than just a place to go to Mass.!
!
Right now for our parish, I have designated seven committees to
address the major aspects of our parish. These may not be the
only committees that we need; there may be other needs that will
require smaller subcommittees. Also these seven committees
will be changing in their work and their focus as we move for-
ward. That is part of what we are discussing as a parish plan.!
!
Let me first say that I understand that there is a difference be-
tween a Council and a Committee. The primary work of our Fi-
nance Council and Faith Formation Council is to advise me, as
the pastor in the decisions I make. But these two councils also
have a secondary purpose of taking on certain projects. For ex-
ample, this past month the Finance Council worked on develop-
ing a budget for next year and the Faith Formation Council has
been at work on Adult Education projects. On the other hand,
Committees, like the seven I am proposing, are primarily “work
groups” for ongoing parish activities and specific projects. Yet
these committees also have a voice in making recommendations
back to the Councils and through the councils to the Pastor.!
!
Furthermore, we have to remember that while there are various
business models that we could try to follow, the reality is that
while a parish “does” business in serving its members and the
community around us, it is more like an extended family. As a
community that is centered on the Eucharist, our model is the
Body of Christ. Just as the organs of our bodies each have a spe-
cific function, but rely upon the other organs, so too in a parish
no council, committee or project can work in isolation. !
!
Right now, there are various projects on my desk that I cannot
accomplish by myself. I need the input and ideas of the parish so
that these projects can be completed in a timely fashion and in a
way that represents the needs of the whole parish. Next week I
will begin to name some of these projects that I will be asking the
committees to undertake. For right now, our work is continued
prayer to the Holy Spirit that we may recognize and discern how
we are being led as the parish of St. Aidan!St. Patrick.!
